at 7:33 it's not the note that gets me choked up, it's the crowd response. knowing that there can be a full room of people that match my vibe for this band hits me like a ton of bricks
I was absolutely blown away by Spencer at 7:25 , you can hear his voice starting to fatigue and yet he STILL manages to find and hold that final high note. Such an insanely difficult song to perform and he killed it.
This is one of their best songs vocally. One of the best he's recorded. I wasn't a fan of his the first couple of albums, but he's improved so much over the years.
It's funny how it works. My range is similar to his and those first two high notes are harder to hit than the last higher one for me. It's like the last one is using a different part of my voice that isn't tired from the singing up to that point
On the train back from their show in London right now, incredible show but I was gutted this wasn’t on the set list, my current favourite song of theirs 🖤
Thank you so much for capturing this. Seeing it live was one of the highlights of my entire 23 years attending live shows. From Spencer psyching himself up for the high note at 5:55, to his raw emotion afterwards, and the insane support of the crowd. The energy in the room at that moment was goddamn magical.
- Dad, why my sister's name is Daisy? - Cuz your mother likes so much these flowers, so I choose your name from something I like. - Ok dad, I love you - I love you too, Periphery - Wax Wings (LIVE DEBUT) @ Bluebird Theater, Denver, 11/7/23
I can’t believe they played all my fav songs from P5, although I also really like Thanks Nobuo it doesn’t strike me as a “live song” as much. When I saw them in the spring I expected Wildfire/Atropos, but my favs were Zagreus, Dracul Gras, and Wax Wings and I was bummed I didn’t hear one of them. But not only that, it was the frickin debut performance for Wax Wings AND Dying Star which I didn’t expect to be a live song either, let alone the performances of some songs for the first time since 2014. I can’t wait to see them again already, they even have enough amazing material for a 3rd set. Anyway, THANK YOU for recording the whole song, especially also including the intro bits as those moments where they got to speak were so special.
@@IIESPD00DIIYeah I’m not saying it wouldn’t be good but it just isn’t as “headbangy” and there’s a lot of electronic bits and violins they’d have to have triggers for in the DAW. Incredible song I’d also love to hear!
This is by FAR my favourite song these guys came out. Hearing it live, the amount of emotion and strain Spencer puts into every single word he sings is absolutely insane. Fucking love this band.
Metal musicians then: bang your heads and throw your bras at me! Metal musicians today: (talking about the song as if they were showing you their favourite dinosaur)
How does he figure out that tuning with all the chords and new intervals (because it's no longer strings going down in 4ths) without knowing any theory?
Just a thought here, but for a band that so prevalently features highly technical instrumentation it might be that he's turning to take the focus off of himself to give it to his band mates. Could be totally off here, but that was my initial reaction.
I'm no live sound engineer, but he does seem to stand slightly close to the drumkit as there's not enough place on the stage, and the cymbal bleed might come through the mic, further accentuated by compression. He also seems to have a supercardioid mic, which is good at rejecting from the sides, so maybe that's why.
They had a bassist. He quit touring so he's just a studio musician. Easier to just use backing tracks and keep the old bassist in the family, in a sense. It's a bit disappointing for live performances, but lots of bands these days decide that they don't even need a bass player.
Not really, I think they even referred to it as a special evening with Periphery. Also they did not talk about each song, just about new ones and some old ones
It's a technically hard song to sing and that's a far stretch saying out of pitch big time....what's your point of reference, the album recording or Puddle of Mud covering Nirvana. Spencer killed it for first time live, by all rights no one thought he would even try to sing it live. Maybe you are just used to artists singing easier songs with less vocal gymnastics or backing tracks.
it's never gonna be as perfect as the album recording, but man, his vocals are phenomenal live, considering how hard this song is to sing. It didn't even sound off most of the time.
Did we listen to the same performance? You must be new to how live performances sound compared to studio because that was fantastic for a song of that difficulty.
Awesome. The best song from p5
I agree!
Without question. I love his "I paid for a neck, I'm playing the entire damn neck" style of playing.
This is wax wings not thanks nobuo
@@HugoStiglitz88 LMFAO TRUE
Debatable
I love how jake doesnt need to do backing vocals because the crowd takes care of it
Best things about this video:
- band plays wax wings for the first time ever and nails it.
- spencer wears a sikth shirt.
-Matts kickdrum

They celebrated the note too, i think that any periphery fan knows how hard it is to sing their song even for Spencer, is just incredible performance.
Glad I'm not the only one who gets chills and chokes up from crowd input.

@@scottwelfare9267 same thing for me lolll. When reaching a certain note and higher, we do something different for us to reach it.
He doesnt hold it as per the song though
been waiting for wax wings live for so long
thanks bud
You are welcome!
What a song. A beacon of hope for my own struggles.
Feeling the same bro, absolutely inspiring, we got this 💪🏼💪🏼
Wasn’t sure how spencer would sound live on this one.. Absolutely killed it!
He slays everything. Spencer can sing sing
This album had almost no fx on his vocal. He want over that in the make of video. Kinda what you hear is what you get.
Not fucking fair. So lucky everyone who got to see this
So glad I found Periphery. They are all amazing musicians. Got me back into loving music again.
That's a really nice crowd. So crazy to be on stage and hear all the people screaming your songs like that.
Periphery fans always give back. It’s like a periphery family ❤️
On the train back from their show in London right now, incredible show but I was gutted this wasn’t on the set list, my current favourite song of theirs 🖤
Im blown away by this band’s songwriting ability and live performance
Thanks for capturing this! Wish they had played this in Anaheim when I went 😢
Seriously. Kinda jealous that Denver got 2 shows back to back and with tons of bangers
Dude same!!! Was sick hearing their old stuff and the lesser known songs like Insomnia and Prayer Position. But yea I wish they played it.
Wow that crowd brought it together with the group vocals! Gave me chills thinking about how awesome this would have been as a performer!

Man Periphery is one of those bands that have that something special… this is amazing, thanks for sharing!
Wax wings is such a banger bro 🙏

And this is why i will always say Spencer is the best vocalist in the prog/djent genre.
thanks for the upload man !

This song staves off the intrusive thoughts.
one of my fav. song from periphery5
Killing It ❤
I WAS THERE
You lucky son of a gun
Amazing song. God I need to see a show in Denver that crowd is alive!!!
incredible song and perfomance

Such an amazing performance. I love this band so much! Thank you for the video!
Wow, they crushed it. Thanks so much for recording this!
I was hoping they'd play this, considering this was my favorite song from P5. So glad they did this.
Just saw them the 2 nights in Baltimore! They killed it just like they did with this debut!!🔥🔥
Thanks for recording this! Fucking sick! Kudos to the band for nailing this very technical song live!
Fuck this is incredible!
7:34 So epic 😍
Did anyone else get goosebumps through their entire body when Spencer hits that high note?! It almost made me whimper. Damn that's powerful.
I did just the same as when i saw him do it in Montreal
Wow Spence sounds good here.
i hope they play it on Monday!
Come to bloody Adelaide!!!
07:34 Jesus!!!
Mrak crushed that solo
I am so jealous I wasn't in the room for this.
Looking at Jake I feel tired myself 😢
How does he figure out that tuning with all the chords and new intervals (because it's no longer strings going down in 4ths) without knowing any theory?
Why is Spencer singing sideways to the crowd? Genuine question.
That is a really good question. I want to know it too 😄

Is spencer's throat okay ? (-':
How TF does Mark not know shit about music theory 💀 this gives me hope! I assumed he was well versed in it, the way he plays
I dunno why but the chorus reminds of anime OPs
so onstage they have 3 guitarists but no bassist? weird haha

Theres no way Spencer hits that note live.
..Okay then.
Yo wtf is Halperns Kick Head
Do you mean Dracul Gras image on it?
Dmaj9
I listened to Wax Wings so many times that I noticed that Spencer mistakes this song 2x, at least.
I can hear a couple little whoopsie daisies in their songs. Good to hear that they aren’t robots. No good for them to try to make it too perfect.
Kinda weird to talk about songs like a clinic no?
Not really, I think they even referred to it as a special evening with Periphery. Also they did not talk about each song, just about new ones and some old ones
No. It’s also good filler while someone is tuning or dealing with gear.
Nah we're all music nerds this was perfect

Sort of… they’ve always been a musicians’ band, for a show like this it’s pretty intimate and cool.
