Hey Cody, living in Canada in a small mountain town and the only place to get the skates sharpened is a convenience store in the back lol. Was thinking of getting this machine to do my local team and probably a few other peoples from around town, all we play is beer league but still nice to have good edges. Was looking at some of the hollows on the website and some say "FIRE" ring. Not sure what that means, as im just used to using radius. Hope youre enjoying the machine still.
Seems you just have it plugged in with no converter. Did you order a model with an EU plug for Germany on 220-240V? Could you comment in general about ordering and operating it in Deutschland?
What level of usage would one expect to be a reasonable amount for this machine? If it got for example 10 usages per week, is that considered too much? We are looking at purchasing something like this for our club
Love all your videos! As a novice level coach I'm always interested in your drills. What is the differences between the different edge's you mentioned? I've always just got a standard grind on my skates, but I'm curious as to what the other ones are. Might be a great video idea for you!
Very simple different sharpening equals different grip search up hockey skate sharping chart on Google for better understanding most recommended and used in the NHL is 5/8 and 3/4 if your using normal that would be 1/2 and is basically alot more grippy and less glide so your slower
Have you ever thought about doing an adult clinic in the Northeast (I'm in NJ), maybe late spring or summer? I know I'd be in for it, and would definitely bring along several beer leaguers.
Marat Shikhris we currently don't have one in the works but if there is interest we can try and make it happen. We work with plenty of adults in Colorado and Idaho.
The outside edge of my left skate doesn't seem to bite into the ice during crossovers, it pretty much just shaves off snow. I didn't have this problem before but recently I've had my skates sharpened at a different place. Could my edges be out of alignment? I've also noticed there's a part of the left edge that tends to always get stuck in the ice. Any advice is greatly appreciated
Flameswipe21 your edges arent balanced. This means whomever is sharpening your skates doesnt have the skate centered on the grinding wheel and one edge is higher then the other
Harbor Lampl thank you. When looking at the blade of that skate the blade looks like it's physically bent in the holder to one side. I'm looking at getting a new pair once the season ends so I'm not going to buy a new holder/blade
I used to sharpen skates at a major sporting goods store in Canada. It' sounds like you'll have to get your blades ground flat and then resharpened by a good skate sharpening guy.
Great review, I liked hearing about it from a pros standpoint. Are you still using vh skates? If so, how are they treating you? Any chance you could review those at some point? Also, could you discuss workout routines during and off season? Thanks! Keep up the great reviews :)
Hey Atothek17 I created this video with Cody. I did an in depth VH Skate review last season on my channel. It's one of the most viewed on youtube. Let me know what you think.
We love VH Skates. Would never use anything else! We just happened to be sharpening Marian Dejdar's skates so we used those to shoot the review but we have about 12-14 guys in VH and they all LOVE them. Check out Jordan's video on his personal channel ( Joadelic)
Anthony Llabres So funny you bring that up when I first got my Sparx machine I had trouble with the alignment after I sharpened my skates my blades were not even they were off a bit about 2 lines on the edge checker I emailed Sparx they walked me through how to fix the issue ever since then every sharpening my blades are just about perfectly even according to the edge checker I was going to return the Sparx machine because my blades were not even in the beginning before I was able to adjust the alignment issue glad I didn’t return it this is the best investment I ever made consistency every time. I think when you set up the alignment and look through that glass piece that line should go all the way across instead of half way it would make the alignment set up a lot easier.
Hi there. It's a tricky question because everybody like something a little different. A lot of heavier guys on our team defenitly prefer a shallow hallow like a 7/8 or 1 inch. And guys that weigh a little less go anywhere from a 1/2 to 5/8. I also think when you are playing in pro rinks with a lot of seating and people in them the ice will generally be a little softer. If the ice is softer the guys will go more shallow then they normally would. When your young you are skating in very cold arenas and don't weigh as much so everyone tends to be on a much deeper hollow like 3/8 or 1/2. I know that we don't have one guy that is deeper than a 1/2 on our team except maybe a goalie that likes his skates really sharp

great! think 1/2 or 5/8 are most used - depending also on weight and ice softness.
Exactly. Personal preference and ice conditions. The one thing on our team though is that no one has tried a flat bottom sharpening ever so we have no info on that but am looking forward to trying it when the season is over.
I prefer 9/16 & 5/8 depending on what rink I play on. I used to sharpen professionally in MN and have tried everything. I am 6'2" tall and weigh 190 pounds. My experience is that most people sharpen too strong of a curve like 3/8 and don't realize that their skates don't glide as well on the straight away.
Very disappointing product! $1200 to buy and the alignment is way out! They want another $200 for a cheap piece of plastic that probably costs the $2 to manufacture to check the alignment on your blade. Zero stars!
Great review, I also own a Sparx and love it! Also, insanely great beard!
You should do a 1 year follow up review. I've not had 1 good experience with the sparx yet.
What don’t u like or y has ur experience been so bad
Your beard, I mean your review, helped me buy the SPARX sharpener

Thanks. Getting my skates sharpened today for the first time with Sparx. Wish me luck
I just got mine not too long ago. Was looking for a pro review. Great insight. Thanks
How is it working after 5 years in ?
I have a question … can it do 9 , 10, 11,12, 13 foot radius ?
great video man, wish I had the cash to get a Sparx of my own
Great video thanks for the information what radius ring would I use for a 10-year-old forward???? Regards Danny Williams👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
1/2 is perfect
Daniel Williams 1/2
Sparx is life changing. Quit thinking about it and just get it... you'll never look back!

Yes your blade could be bent which can make a huge difference and will not give a straight sharpening!
Flameswipe21 your edges arent balanced. This means whomever is sharpening your skates doesnt have the skate centered on the grinding wheel and one edge is higher then the other
Jacob Smicer thank you, I tried taking it to a better shop but the problem is still there so I'll try somewhere else

When you sharpen the skates do you have them facing the same way because you have the right skate facing right, would the left face left
The blade is straight so it doesnt matter
If a player has a profile on their skate will this machine still follow it and not change or mess it up?
Kyle Fyfe No it won’t as long as you have the height adjustment set up right for your blades

Has anyone had a NOT SO GOOD experience like alignment issues?
Anthony Llabres So funny you bring that up when I first got my Sparx machine I had trouble with the alignment after I sharpened my skates my blades were not even they were off a bit about 2 lines on the edge checker I emailed Sparx they walked me through how to fix the issue ever since then every sharpening my blades are just about perfectly even according to the edge checker I was going to return the Sparx machine because my blades were not even in the beginning before I was able to adjust the alignment issue glad I didn’t return it this is the best investment I ever made consistency every time. @Cody Lampl Hey Cody, greetings from Schlappschuss Eppelheim .
you dont have a beard. the beard has you...
what hollow do most of you pro guys use?

FBV seams more sharpy. it makes me feel more control on my edges. Well u have to try it anyway)
