Thank you for recognizing and honoring the TAKUMI members at Toyota's Tahara factory. They are the real craftsman and the most valuable people in the company.
My wife and I test drove a bunch of new crossovers to replace her aging minivan. She wanted something (anything) other than another van. We tried Subaru Ascent, Honda Pilot, and the Highlander. We were both turned off by the use of turbo-charged 4 cylinder engines (Toyota and Subaru), CVT transmissions (Subaru), and brand new models (Honda). The prices of these vehicles are so high that we wanted something that would last. We just put down a deposit on a lightly used 4Runner instead - mainly because of the legendary quality of this vehicle. Looking at this video and others like it, I'm glad we made this decision. Hoping to get 300+k miles out of this wonderful machine.
And you will get over 300,000 miles on your 4runner GUARANTEED !!!.....but only if you maintain it well.change oils regularly and please make sure u flush them and refill.dont just drain and refill and your 4runner will love you for eternity...even your grandkids will be driving it long after your gone.
As an occasional vehicle consumer, I miss the days when the phrase "built like a tank" actually MEANT something. You've shared information about the 4Runner that instantly places it on my short list of "next" vehicles (MPG be damned!). Thanks very much for another uncommonly good video.
We just bought a 15. I absolutely love it. Even the SR5 trim is well equipped, drives awesome, is unstoppable off road, and really does feel like a tank. With 50k miles on it I expect it to be running just as well 10 years from now.
I am pretty sure the 4runner will have a hybrid system in their next gen 4runner. Toyota appears to be transitioning all their models to hybrid. In due time. It would be awesome if the 4runner can get at least 30mpg with a hybrid system.
Great video. I've owned 3 4Runners as well as a Land Cruiser and a Lexus for my wife. I was a product development engineer at Tier 1 supplier Bosch for 8 years. Toyota was my customer and a I can verify that Toyota has a world leading approach to manufacturing and engineering, that is different from other car builders, even in their US plants. We were required to be fully versed in Kaizen principles and methods to produce components that were suitable. ✌🏼
@@westeed1 Not familiar with that specific pump other than to know Bosch produced many different pumps. I was involved with the antilock braking and vehicle stability control units.
I just bought a 2024 Forerunner Limited and I plan to keep it for many years. I just retired and think this may be my last rig, and I plan to be around a long time. From1974 FJ 40 Landcruiser, to 1987 FJ 60 to the best of the bunch, the new Forerunner. Toyota keeps getting better and better.
I hear you Mike! Just retired myself and suspect that this will be the last vehicle I'll ever own. That being said, someone in my family is going to inherent one hell of a truck.
I just traded in my 2007 4Runner, which I bought new to buy a new 2023 4Runner limited edition , which I'm delighted to be a proud owner. Thank you for your explanation of the production of this fine vehicle. It makes me feel more fortunate yet to know of its origin and the dedication of the long-term employees who built my new baby. Again, thank you 😊
Very nice tribute and video on the 4Runner and the great builders at Tahara plant. Our stable still includes a 1997 4Runner Limited and 2012 GX460. More than 500k miles combined on them and they still don't have squeaks and rattles. True owner testament to the quality of workmanship and craftsmanship from the experienced Tahara workers. Shout out to them and Thank You from Wisconsin!
❤thank you Toyota. Our 4 runners and Tacoma’s are critical to the operation of our ranch. They have never been able to be replicated by other manufactures.
I am a loyal 4Runner owner over 23 years and 3 generations (3, 4, 5). It is an honor to own and drive a vehicle built in the Tahara factory. Thank you for your wonderful video!
I just picked up a classic silver metallic 2021 5th gen TRD OFF-ROAD PREMIUM with moon roof used with 7974 miles! Insane find! I’m still pinching myself. Bought it near Seattle at a dealer for $41,500 plus tax and licensing. Sold a 2007 SR5 5 years ago and a one owner 2002 almost 2 years ago. It was a long 2 years with out the luxury of a TOYOTA 4RUNNER IN THE STABLE. MY 2020 TRD PRO TACOMA now has a sibling! Could not be happier. BUY A TOYOTA!
This is one of the best 4Runner reviews I’ve seen on the internet, this is my favorite automobile by far, won’t change it for any other car, proud owner of a 2018 sr5 premium
Loved my 2018 4runner before it bought it and have loved her ever since. Quality is quality. Wonderful vehicle and I can thank the hard workers at the Tahara plant for their dedication.
I was in the market for a new vehicle recently . At the time, I was all in on the new gen 6 4runner... ..until I sat in and fell in love with a gen 5. The quality density is immediately noticeable. Vastly beyond everything else on the market , especially within its price range. I just put a deposit down on a brand new 2024 TRD off-road. Never been so excited about a vehicle.
We still have our 2009 4Runner limited and it's just a crazy crazy good car. Literally drives like brand new. Has not been in a garage one single night in its life.
David, I'm extremely happy with my 2022 (5th Gen) 4Runner TRD Off Road in Lunar Rock. But that could be predicted since my previous vehicle was a 2011 (also 5th Gen) 4Runner SR5. In 2008, a master mechanic told me exactly what you stated in your video - that Made in Japan still meant something as far as quality. I hope this 2022 TRD Off Road will last as long as my Nikon cameras (also made in Japan).
Everytime I watch David 4runner video I smiled because I own one :). The most solid vehicle I ever own! Sure its not refined, it is not efficient compared to todays standard, many SUV drives better or more comfortable but hey its never meant to be, It's built to take you on and off the beaten path. A Truly old school 4x4 build quality vehicle that speak for itself. May the legacy continues....4Runner...the last of its kind.
My first vehicle i ever owned and drove was a 2010 nissan altima..it took me from point A to point B...but with alot of problems.i finally saw the writing on the wall and it was time to upgrade to something better...enter the 2014 4Runner Limited RWD i purchased it back in april from carmax at 95,000 miles for $26,000.it was love at first sight and the moment i got inside it felt like an army tank and i was about to go into a warzone lol lol lol.i have read so many great reviews on the 4runner from AMD,Scotty, and now you David. To this day i never regret purchasing this 4runner,i wake up with excitement each day just wanting to get inside my 4runner and drive it somewhere.its an honor to have met, drove and owned the legendary 4runner built by legendary engineers.Thank You David and Thank you TOYOTA....going places 😅.
I wish that the new 4Runners are as solid, capable and trustworthy as the ones we have had for years. The folks that build these vehicles should be very proud of their work .
I have owned nine 4Runners since 1994. Reliable, tough as nails, solid, great looking body style, and their resale value has to be better than anything out there. Two that I traded at dealerships were sold before I left the lot. Have loved them all and currently have a 2021 Nightshade edition. They are the best by far. Love this video.
As a long time 4Runner owner and and my wife a Lexus RX350 driver I really appreciated watching this video. I also have a beautiful 2004 Limited V8 4runner that I absolutely love. It is the very best a vehicle I have ever owned. Thank you David!
2017 Cement 4R Pro owner for almost 6yrs now. It's the longest I have owned any vehicle. I am never going to sell it! Like David said, it's the best built vehicle made. Probably will never be surpassed.
Thank you David for your expertise and the detailed knowledge you always give in your videos. I am driving my 4th 4Runner. I currently own the 2022 Limited and plan on driving it past 300k miles. I love the quality, reliability, predicitibility with my current 4Runner. Quality is more important than gas mileage to me. Keep up your great videos. We appreciate them.
David, no words. It’s no secret I’m a big fan of the 4Runner and waiting on the 2024. I’ve often wondered about the production methods as you always refer to this particular factory as one of if not the best in the world. I appreciate this video in particular, just incredible. Many thanks 🙏
Morning David. Great video! Just hit 200k on my ‘15 4Runner limited & it is still ROCK solid!! Contemplating ordering one of the last (2023) GX 460’s largely for the silky V8. Keep up the great content! All the Best, Nate
Just found you video and subbed. Thanks so much for the insight on the quality of these amazing vehicles. Their attention to details and pride certainly does show in the craftmanship and well know reputation as the best.
I’ve had my 2016 SR5 Premium for just over a year and I’m very happy with it. 91,000 miles and it’s been quiet and rattle free until recently when a small heat shield on the exhaust came loose on one end. I took it to the local indy shop I trust and had my friend there look at it. He said it couldn’t be reattached but it wouldn’t hurt anything to remove it, so that’s what he did and it’s quiet again.
Thank you for the very informative information. I bought a new 2006 4-Runner and it has been a real tank. Still running after giving it to my son years ago.
Very good video. I’ve worked for Toyota in Canada as a Tool and Die maker for over 20 years now. Your description is on point. I spent a few months in Japan over three different trips and had the pleasure of working at the Takaoka and Motomachi plants many times as well as visiting suppliers. Very much agree that 4Runner comes from a plant with a very good reputation. I recently purchased a ‘24 4Runner to get one of the last of the old-school ones. Very happy with its build quality and toughness.
I had the opportunity to visit the toyota factory/museum years back when I was at Nanzan University in Nagoya. It was an awesome experience seeing how toyoda was manufactured. Yes I spelled it correctly, that was what I remember seeing there. Also the history of toyoda started as a textile industry. The tech they have is top notch. I am a forever toyota/lexus fan. U want reliability and assurance of a good product car get a toyota, hands down.
I have had my 4Runner for a year now. Wow. I dreamed of having one for years and finally did it. Best ride ever. I put a set of mud/snow tires on and it looks amazing. You will not be disappointed. Thanks for the video. I wondered where it was manufactured. I knew Japan but that was all.
Having some Basic Pride in One's Workmanship Shows the Clear Difference at the end of the Day, Most Japanese manufacturers strive to be the Best some excel to the Top of course, Thanks David 👍.
David-a while back you asked for topic ideas and I asked if you could talk about why the reliability and build quality of brands like Toyota and Honda are higher than most others. This video answered that for me. Thanks very much and keep up the great work!
@@AutomotivePress There's a peculiar combination of pride and humility that is demonstrated in the work of dedicated craftsmen (and I'm not excluding engineers).
I truly believe that Japanese vehicles especially the Toyota is the most reliable vehicle in the world. I purchased a brand new Toyota Rav4 here in Canada way back in 2001, I still have it. Never had any issues with it. I love the limited edition of the 4 Runners. That will be my next vehicle hopefully. I like the fact that Toyota keeps the 4 Runner looking like a real SUV. Not like those other rounded off SUV's now looking like cars. I hope 4 Runner stays like a true SUV look in future years too.
I love the 4Runner, perfect family vehicle. The only vehicle you need. If I was a millionaire I would only buy from Toyota or Lexus, I don't care about going fast or showing off, all I care is that my vehicle is reliable and gets me from point A to B. When I have children one day and they grow up I will buy them Japanese made vehicles. You guys make great engines and great vehicles and I respect the meticulous detail and hard work you guys do making these vehicles. God bless you and God bless Japan.
I have a 1998 Toyota 4Runner SR5 in Anthracite Metallic with 336,000 miles. I bought it brand new in October of 1997 and frequently receive comments on it. I routinely do general maintenance on it and have not had any major mechanical issues... It's my only vehicle and it still runs well!
The only noise I can hear on mine is the squeak of the suspension when off-roading, but it is overwhelmed by the fun I have, never thought this would be the most satisfying vehicle I had...
So the main difference is the fact that the 4Runner is built at the Tahara plant (mainly producing Lexus sedans and SUVs) , and the Takumi workers have 30+ years of experience? Thatś the reason why Toyota isn´t moving the 4Runner to there new Mexico plant for production? The main market for the 4Runner is the US and Canada (and some smaller markets in South America). Toyota sells over 100k+ 4Runners each year in the US. A few years ago Toyota was saying "each model that sells more than 100k units per year will be build locally". Thanks for this great inside video! Thumbs up!
Best SUV truck ever made have owned a 2010 one for over 2yrs now n all I do is oil change n keep rolling, this truck is a tank jus like he has said, money well spent and it has still maintained the same value I paid for it 2yrs ago, and am glad I just paid it off this month 23k done🇺🇲🇺🇲🇰🇪🇰🇪🙏🙏
Thank you for all these details! I am on my 4th 4Runner and LOVE them! Two of them were in bad accidents (not my fault) - in both cases the other cars were totaled while I just had a bent bumper 💪
I am the owner of 1 toyota corolla 3 toyota camry 4runner the best vehicles I have ever owned never have any major issues Thanks Toyota for keeping me off the road stranded especially when traveling at night
People will argue all day about how where a vehicle was made doesn't matter in terms of quality but a Toyota made in Japan is still the best quality. Especially the 4runner since it was made in Japan from the start and still is. Unlike the pickup which used to be made in Japan until mid 90s, then US, then US and Mexico, and now the Tacoma are only built in Mexico. If only Toyota would build the Tacoma at the Tahara plant as well.
Love your videos and your knowledge of Toyota. I have a 16 limited with over 80k I bought at Destination Toyota in Burnaby BC and never had one problem with it. I expect to have it for many more years.
Love my 4runner. Planned and bought a 2020 for covid, a week before covid was announced in America. Going to last me 30 years easy with only 9k miles currently!
Great video! I have a 22 4runner I got in January. I have the Lime Rush. I've mostly had Hondas and this is my first Toyota. I wish I had switched sooner. We needed a back up vehicle so we lucked out and just got a used 2003 4runner with 149k on it. It's got the V8. That is fun to drive too! That feels more car like and the Pro feels more truck like. The pick up when you accelerate is crazy good with that V8! Love them both so much!
Wow! I have 04 Toyota 4runner V6 limited driving like new and has never disappointed me but am about the dispose it for a truck due to the nature of my job I wish I can keep it and still get a truck.
I'm already sold on Toyota... I've driven & enjoyed 4Runner Rentals.. I was looking at RAV4 up to the new Sequoia.. but this dude is really making me want a 4runner
The engineering perspective is very important to me. Thanks for the information. I am waiting oneore year before I buy my 4Runner. I am thinking the last year of this generation will be the best.
My 2007 has 171,000 miles. Just getting broken in. Still no rattles and shakes. It’s a waste of money to buy a 4runner if do not plan to keep and take care of it until it is worn out. Except that it provides outstanding used cars for those of us who value them. I expect to be buried in mine.
I bought my 2015 used last year. She's an absolute beast. The best vehicle I've ever owned....and I've owned a lot. My 4runner is the 55th vehicle I've ever owned.
David, thank you so much for your very informative, and detailed review of the Toyota 4Runner. It is truly inspiring, and offers the professional insight into this remarkable automobile that I truly appreciate.
Good Morning from Florida David, Excellent Video!! I have a 2020 TRD Off Road Premium in White, love my 4Runner, best vehicle I ever had. I had a 17 Tacoma, that was nice too, loved it, had a 16 Mazda 6, had a 16 Mazda Miata, love them as well, that Miata was awesome also, fun too drive, loved it too.
@automotivepress I have a 2006 Toyota 4Runner Limited AWD V8, and with the exception of the frame starting to rust, the build quality is exceptional. From the mechanical aspects to the fit and finish, it is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. Even at over 270k miles, nothing squeaks, rattles, or leaks, and the paint finish/quality is exceptional. Toyota did the 4th Gen 4Runner owners a huge disservice by not offering to replace the frames as they did in the Sequoia and other vehicles. I’ll probably end up replacing my frame if i can find a body shop that specializes in Toyota SUV products.
I just bought a brand new 4Runner and best decision I have made so far , I love the vehicle I use to own a 2005 4Runner and loved it and it was finally time to upgrade !!

Having some Basic Pride in One's Workmanship Shows the Clear Difference at the end of the Day, Most Japanese manufacturers strive to be the Best some excel to the Top of course, Thanks David 👍.
THIS is why I just bought a 2023 4Runner ORP. Thanks for explaining why Toyota and Lexus products built in Japan are so well built.
David-a while back you asked for topic ideas and I asked if you could talk about why the reliability and build quality of brands like Toyota and Honda are higher than most others. This video answered that for me. Thanks very much and keep up the great work!
Thank you for your feedback!
@@AutomotivePress There's a peculiar combination of pride and humility that is demonstrated in the work of dedicated craftsmen (and I'm not excluding engineers).
I have the 2022 limited Toyota 4Runner amazing car these cars are strong and built for durability I love Toyota 4Runner ❤️
Great video! My 4Runner is the best built vehicle I’ve ever owned hands down.
The greatest manufacturing processes in the the world won't matter if the engineering and design behind it all isn't equally high in quality.
Excited to see your new 4Runner reviews and vids like this. And the landcruiser
I just purchased a '23 14:17 4Runner SR5 Premium. You reinforced what I have been noticing about the mfting. Thanks
Thumbs up!
I just got my 23 TRD Pro 4runner in July. It is by far the best new vehicle I've ever purchased. I can't believe the quality!
Thank you for your information. I just purchased a 2023 Trd off road premium and this confirms my purchasing decision.
Great video. I have a 2022 Limited and absolutely love it. Rock solid. Plan to keep it many years.
2004 V8 4runner - 219K miles - Runs perfect! Everything works. Cost me $300 Total to upgrade suspension to 2021 TRD Tacoma takeoff's. Love it
Best SUV truck ever made have owned a 2010 one for over 2yrs now n all I do is oil change n keep rolling, this truck is a tank jus like he has said, money well spent and it has still maintained the same value I paid for it 2yrs ago, and am glad I just paid it off this month 23k done🇺🇲🇺🇲🇰🇪🇰🇪🙏🙏
Really enjoyed the details. I liked the way you included other videos to explain the process!
Glad it was helpful!
Yeah it was a nicely edited video!
Thank you for all these details! I am on my 4th 4Runner and LOVE them! Two of them were in bad accidents (not my fault) - in both cases the other cars were totaled while I just had a bent bumper 💪
@AutomotivePress: Waiting for my 2023 GX460 to come in. I have complete faith in these guys over there. Top notch. Thank you!
Thank you SO much for your evaluation. These things matter when one is considering such a large investment.
Excellent video. Really appreciate your knowledge- thank you for sharing it
Love my trd pro 4R. It drives like old school truck but quality shines ✨️.
And you can be sure that your kids get to school on time - regardless of the weather
Love my 2020 4Runner…
I feel the quality when I drive it.
We’re on our second GX460, and also have a 4Runner. He is 100% correct on quality.
I am the owner of 1 toyota corolla 3 toyota camry 4runner the best vehicles I have ever owned never have any major issues Thanks Toyota for keeping me off the road stranded especially when traveling at night
Ditched my 2020 tiguan for 2018 rav4 and I felt relieved owning toyota !!
Just sold my 4runner a week ago. Best vehicle I’ve had aside from lack of power for my overlanding needs. I will miss the 4runner.
I have an '07 & it always felt solid & high quality. I don't need it anymore but can't let it go either.
Good choice!
I love my 4Runner and have never talked to anyone that’s owned one that didn’t love it.
Great video lots of information thank you very much
Very welcome
Outstanding video. Wish I could go with you later this year. Love my 2021 4Runner
Thanks! 👍
Very good detailed briefing of the Toyota 4 runner build and information on the factory involved.
I bought my 2015 used last year. She's an absolute beast. The best vehicle I've ever owned....and I've owned a lot. My 4runner is the 55th vehicle I've ever owned.
Great video I just bought a new 4 Runner.after some research
Excellent video!
‘Would love to someday visit the Tahara factory.
I have owned a 1997 4Runner Limited since new. Everything is still working flawlessly EXCEPT for FRAME RUST! Great video David! 🥰🥰🥰
Where do you live? I have a 1994 with zero rust , anywhere.
@@AA-mk4pu Wisconsin! 😔
David, thank you so much for your very informative, and detailed review of the Toyota 4Runner. It is truly inspiring, and offers the professional insight into this remarkable automobile that I truly appreciate.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video , we bought a limited last night and your video was really comprehensive and ty for your knowledge.
Thank you for watching!
Very instructive and very well done-Thank you✅👍
You are very welcome
I just bought a brand new 4Runner and best decision I have made so far , I love the vehicle I use to own a 2005 4Runner and loved it and it was finally time to upgrade !!
Congrats! What is the real world mpg?
