Thanks for posting this. I am the original owner of my 73 LP Deluxe and, of course, I can't remember what the frets were like when I got this guitar 40 years ago. Now they are very low, flat and wide and I've assumed for years that it should be re-fretted. I've read recently that these guitars may have had low, flat wide frets installed and I'm hesitant to have it re-fretted even though it is doesn't play as well as my other guitars (with "normal" frets). Your vid didn't show the original frets but I'm wondering if yours were like mine. May I send you a few pics? Thanks.
I may have the original frets around somewhere. If I find them, I'll post a pic or two. If you don't like the way it plays, I'd recommend re-fretting. Just be careful or take it to your trusted local setup tech.
+setupMyGuitar To clarify: In the course of performing a setup, a guitar tech should dress the frets and assess whether there is enough fret wire left to do a proper setup. If the tech believes they need to be replaced, the final decision should rest with the player-- both because of the cost and playing style preferences. A very worn fat (and tall) fret can be similar to a brand new low fret (as used on many Martin guitars). I've made a lot of measurements on frets over the years and will be posting a video soon that goes into some detail on how much fret is enough. A recent Stratocaster refret was right on the cusp, but the player was certain they wanted fresh frets. (Job turned out great--can't wait to post the results!)
I was hoping for the fret wire size! I watched like 15 videos and no one tells what the fret wire size is! Damn
