Great video! Brought back so much memories. I went to Halape in June 1975 a couple of months before the tsunami destroyed the landscape. The only thing we brought was rice, shoyu, water and our diving gear. The fish and lobsters back then was unbelievable. Over the last 50 years I've dived practically the entire island of Hawaii and have seen a lot of spooky and weird things in the ocean. I wish there was such a thing as Go Pro back then. I make 70 years old this April and I haven't done a dive for over 15 years. Your videos has inspired me to want to go back diving so I can enjoy my passion once again and share the fish that I catch with family, friends and complete strangers. I used to always take my catches to the elderly housing areas and they really appreciated the free fish and lobsters. Mahalos for sharing.
The best way to experience that spot is to get dropped off and picked up by boat with all your supplies, you can bring more gear...I've done 4 days 3 nights there.
Ķalapana Aku? Remember Aku in Kalpana back before kilauea took Royal Gardens and then so sadly Kalpana. It was one of the most beautiful communities like real old Hawaii! I lived in Kona for 30 + years from the mid 70's on but spent lots of time in Puna! So blessed to have enjoyed living there back then. I watched all the lava eruptions over the period from around 82' on and was commercial fishing that whole side in my Force 30 a lot every year and I had the perspective from my boat on the ocean looking into shore and I watched and photo documented all the changes in the Kalpana landscape as the lava flows took Kalpana and eventually just buried it till it was unrecognizable. So sad, then Leilani to Pohoiki and kapoho several years ago. Sad to see, but that cycle of Pele and the Aina has been going on for a very long time. Just saw too many friends lose their homes and livelihoods. But, everyone new the risk. But how could you not want to live there? It was so special and beautiful! I have video I took from kaimu the day the lava overtook it and it was gone forever! Just happened to take my mom visiting from Oahu and my cousin visiting from Illinois from kona to Kalpana and back that day and the timing was right when the lava flows took that beautiful black sand beach at Kaimu. It was gone in less than an hour. I used to love swimming at Kaimu and bodysurfing the small waves right up on the black sand beach, with the tall palm trees coming out of the sand and the waves washing up though them. That place was so awesome!! Yeah I remember a Hawaiian guy named Aku in Kalpana back in the days before the lava flows took over it all. He was well known in the community there. I think he had long hair back then and was just one of the Kalpana guys everyone knew. Hawaiian was a legend! Memories... No ka oi! D.L.
Aloha Ryan, Just wanted to ask a favor of you. Many of the places that you share in your videos have become significantly more crowded in this new world of posting and sharing. I appreciate you sharing your diving techniques and stories. I would however kindly ask that certain less touched places that are becoming more and more pressured be left a little less exposed. You can do the same videos without naming everything. Those who know, will know, and those who don’t might be able to still have an adventure if they are willing to put in the work. Please consider that some of these spots are places that someone grew up adventuring too and over the past 20 or 30 years have seen them change significantly. No fault of yours but keeping some of the island’s special places less exposed would be appreciated. 🙏
There's also a lot of history to Halape. I counted nine people on the trail that day. Normally I'd see only one or two. Things are changing very fast now.
@@marklanders630 Mahalo Nui Mark for sharing. Hopefully Ryan and Sam can understand that change is inevitable but to be discreet in exposing locations keeps those special places special just a little longer....
As a local native Hawaiian, I couldn’t agree with you more. The exploitation of our lands have become a extremely concerning issue within the last few years because of social media. I don’t mind people vlogging their vacations, but not at the expense of locals and exploiting spots that may have taken them years to discover by themselves. Enjoy yourselves while you’re here, but please leave our places unnamed in your videos. If people feel so compelled to travel, then ask locals or local guides. Not much of adventure of the whole world knows about. Much Mahalos 🤙🏽
When he started talking about how you were feeling I immediately thought it might be a monthly thing, there is a reason we have to eat more during the first days, Man U did amazing taking care of her!!
We stopped and talked briefly at the start of your hike, I was grumbling about whoever spray painted the rocks. When you told me you were going all the way to Halape iki, I thought, oh man! They are in for one cooker of a day. Great adventures never come easy. Thanks for the show.
Ty for the Vids..Had to leave the Islands over a dozen years ago..Not a day goes by I don't dream of being in the water everyday and Ulua Fishing..God Bless and a Big Mahalo again.
I live on Maui now, but I spent 1 1/2 years on Big Island. Walking, biking on that black lava is like being inside a frying pan. Still looks like an epic time though.
Chopsticks are always easy to stuff in the side of your pack and they are invaluable when cooking and eating on trips like this. Love the trip and as always love your content!! Y'all are awesome!
Good on ya both Ryan and Samagram proud of you guys it was long hot May have been kinda disappointed but you both made thee best of it u got some lobsters n an uhu such beautiful places here 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾 can’t wait for ur next video happy 2022 !
Happy New Year, ...That tiny leafs tree right next to you when cooking breakfast is like charcoal. You can just cut and burn it when still green, but start up with a tiny branch. Amazing video you guys... love it.
Nice one guys. Pretty cool vid. We’re all stuck at home with COVID so nice to have some great content during isolation. Just makes me wish I could go jump in the ocean though.
Did you guys go swim in the pools of spring water? They are filled with prawns and small fish. The last time I was down there was over 34 years ago. We hiked down from the Pali, and back up. It was shorter, but just as hard. Glad you both made it there and back.
Loved the concept but alas, Sam reminds me of my wife. My wife would have been miserable on the same journey. Maybe next time take Justin and hunt for some giant Ukus
Dude the bodies! Where I come from they have so much meat ( east coast of Canada) There has got to be a lot of meat in those legs to say the least......you are killing me here. I drool when you cook lobsters but COOK THE BODIES! Please.....

IN Hawaii when we pile the rocks up like that on is called a AHU it’s used as a marker or a land divider🤙🏽
I used to hike that 13 mile hike as a kid every summer. Watching this brought back so many memories mahalo
The best way to experience that spot is to get dropped off and picked up by boat with all your supplies, you can bring more gear...I've done 4 days 3 nights there.
This guy knows what he talking about!
Yeah and can troll all the way if coming from hilo or south side. Uncle aku would have his gear helicoptered in back in the day

I have been there and it is beautiful place but the hike is crazy. Going in is easy going out is even harder.
The wait is over :’)
Can’t believe you walked that far over a lava field. I know from personal experience just how difficult it can be to walk across that stuff.
Great video! Might be my new favorite! Really enjoyed the survival challenge!
Beast! happy new year keep it up
Happy New Year, ...That tiny leafs tree right next to you when cooking breakfast is like charcoal. You can just cut and burn it when still green, but start up with a tiny branch. Amazing video you guys... love it.

So love what you guys do. Sam is a total trooper. Based on this, just bought a hoodie!
I don’t think this was Sam’s idea of fun 🤷🏻♀️
Awesome, thank you for sharing!
From my hiking experience, those piles of rocks that are used for directions are called cairns. Not sure if there’s a Hawaiian name though.
Love videos much 💪👍❤️❤️👏👋👋
Nice one guys. Pretty cool vid.
We’re all stuck at home with COVID so nice to have some great content during isolation. Just makes me wish I could go jump in the ocean though.
I would be game to hike 26 miles each way for this, every time! 🤙
I made my fire in the sand. I dug a hole. Then made my fire in the hole. On the beach it was awesome.
