im confused, i thought chia was not gpu intensive and was based on hard drives?

They must’ve found a way to create the plots on a GPU, versus before when it was impossible to do that because you needed lots of vram more than what was possible without custom code spanning multiple GPUs.
I guess they found a way around that.

GPUs are optional, but can make a setup more efficient (more rewards for the same amount of HDD space, less power to create the files Chia uses, and less power long-term farming a lot of space)

You can create Chia plots on hard drives now using a gpu whereas in the past you couldn’t. It’s still not very intensive at all if compared to PoW.

It's still on HDD but uses GPU instead of CPU. GPU are faster. Now with plots compression it make sence. Compressed plots are 29 Gb, uncompessed 100Gb.

most important in Chia farming (that nobody discuss) is wattage, and costs. There are kids that think there is free energy if you pay 10k $ for PV ROFL
I have done few profitability studies, and NO GPU can beat CPU in efficiency & profitability...PERIOD ;-) Any GPU is always 50-500W overhead to same HW used in normal farming. Adding remote compute, efficiency drops. Any extra PC needs at least 50-100W at idle.
10k plots CPU farming @ 300W vs insane 20k GPU farming (same amount of HDDs) @ 500-600W will be never repaid ;-)
First rig may be repaid in 5y (assuming no resale of used stuff), while 2nd rig with extra 1000-2000$ GPU.
After recent filter change in Chia network, everything got screwed again with compression.
