Great 4 day workshop guys on a awesome farm. We worked around the weather with lectures in the morning and hands on in the garden in the afternoon. Jodi had it setup so we could all get our hands on experience, from breaking in new ground through to irrigation, seeding, planting, harvesting, washing, drying, packing, labelling and we got to use all the tools. Curtis was born to teach and has the knowledge to back him.
Curtis, thank you for converting meters to feet and inches for us dumb Mainers. Thank you for showing us farming in other parts of the earth. Mars is next with hydroponics. Love your videos, so inspirational. Be Blessed my friends.
Nice to see the NZ context. We are not doing market gardens, but we are doing sheep intensively on 5 acres in South Westland NZ, using chickens (40 heritage breed) to speed up the breakdown of the sheep manure, and adding the high value chicken manure at the same time. The eggs pay for the chicken feed which becomes the fertilizer, the chickens are the rototiller and fly control. We harvested 167 square bales off just 1 acre in February to sustain our sheep through the winter. Its the end of May now, we still have lots of green pasture to feed. New are using sheep netting ( electric) and two wire portable poly wire fences to strip manage the two mobs, (ewes with ram and the lambs). This system works very well to control parasite reinfestation. BTW, we have 6 meters of rain annually! Would love to do a course with you, as we are just beginning to experiment with a small tunnel house right now. Richard Perkins was also an inspiration as well as you guys and Joe Salatin and Justin Rhodes. All of you- Great people sharing your knowledge - thank you!

I know how to figure when to start, but I have no idea what or how much to start. You said in the turnip video that you like to start some in August and get a fall crop. I don't know how to figure out what I need. I guess I want to know how you decided what to start with and how much.

Taxes suck up here. Way better down in the US, and they're about to get a lot better if Trump follows through with his plan. Sure, get your insurance for the market. I have it. No biggie. $500 or so.

Yes, but keep in mind that it's harder to make a profit from it quickly. I'm going to do a video soon about how to make a business for this. The basic idea is to have a strong base that is cash flow positive, like a market garden like mine, then diversify outwards from that base.

No, he's not double digging the market beds. He even admits now that there's no point to double digging. They get the same effect with a deep forking on the original construction of the beds.
Hey Curtis, what is your viewpoint on ginseng? I know you like crops that are harvestable in roughly 60 days and ginseng can be grown up to 6 years if the farmer chooses so, but don't you think the high price per pound of the roots would be a worthwhile, long-term investment (planting a lot)?
X O R A Do the math. How many pounds per square foot can you get? Divide that by 6 years. Factor in other costs like labor, crop loss, over head and other things.
curtis i dont know if you re aware of the situation in venezuela . there is a very serious food shortage there , and as reported on the news today people are going to start dying from lack of food. with what you know , what are the chances you could get a team together to go there and show them what you do ? i understand the way you do things here might need modified to work there , but im sure they are motivated enough to adapt what they can to make it work. i have no idea who you need to talk to too do this, but i think someone like you is their best shot for survival. we have family there and we have known for a while that things were not great there but until today we did not know things were this bad. at this time people are waiting in line for hours to get food only to find when they get there there is no food on the shelves. they need a way to fix this now and permanently.
I know all about it. Yet another country has fallen victim to the short falls of socialism. I hope the people can turn things around. People around the world need to see this and realize that putting the state in control of things like agriculture and food distribution always ends up in mass starvation. As much as I want to help, I have a family now, I can't risk my life to go and evangelize down there. Their problem isn't agriculture at it's base, it's socialism.

Its a basic idea - the cow produces milk - mainly for the house ( cream, butter etc too) AND a calf. You fatten the calf to eat or sell- this covers the basic costs of vetinary/feed inputs - meaning the milk is ecconomically good value and you have manure for the farm.If you have the time/space its good but is a more lifestyle choice ? thanks Curtis for yet another great video
