  • In 1776, a party led by Juan Bautista de Anza surveyed the area around San Francisco Bay, which was one of the most productive ecosystems in the western Americas. The landscape they encountered contained vast tidal marshes, wetlands and coves that have disappeared today due to fill and development.

    Find it hard to believe that Europeans hadn't reached it earlier, Drake supposedly, but surely others.... just wondering? 👍

      They suppose that Drake never found SF Bay because of fog over the entrance, which I suppose could have happened, but I find questionable.
