I love how Telles seems to be constantly running a "proof of concept" experiment every time he grapples. No wonder his style was dubbed "weird jiu-jitsu" in Brazil. And here he is against another weird jiu-jitsu proponent in Keenan. I like to imagine the TT Team had continued with Telles and Terere as coaches.

When I was a white belt a tried to start a roll from turtle and the upper belt asked me what I was doing and lectured me to not ever do it again. Now I think, what a doosh!
zlongshark Yes it does but seems to have some worm elements to it since the leg was fed all the way through and sweep seems to lead you straight to the armlock situation (9:35), or can even of course lead to a mount or back take. Not quite sure though..
9:10 was a reverse de la worm using the closer lapel instead of the outside lapel. This is the same guard structure he used at this same tournament to hit the worm bar.
Most bbj instructors will tell you to hurry up and get the hell out of turtle and to never expose your back. But for someone who has the free reign to develop it without thier teacher going bizerk on them every time they turtle it really can be developed into something special. Go watch Eduardo telles highlight video, its amazing. hes my favorite to watch especially in an era where double guard pulls and two guys berimboling each other at the same time is so prevalent.
So does Telles ever aggressively attack ? How does he plan to win his matches ? He has an amazing ability to maintain guard and keep people from collecting points
@@beauchapman4155 that’s not something you go to black belt champion comps for. That’s like people who hold their breathe till the buzzer just to say they haven’t been choked. I feel like Telles is much more than that.
In the past they fight to make the opponent tapout, in the present they fight to make points and see who has more flexbility in the ass hole ! Miss the old school !
Glad keenan won. At first i was astonished by telles’ positioning and retention, but eventually got dissapointed with his gameplan. Didn’t turn his scrambles into any offense and only blocked his opponent for the majority of the time.
I don't understand why my fellow jiu jitsu players want to play from a negative position, it's common sense type stuff, Rodolfo wins easy with passing and smashing and he is rarely tired or having to come back in points because he bullied around having guys more dominant positions, cyborg abreu puzzles me too because his freestyle wrestling is above average but he always wants to play from bottom then scramble to come back at the end
+Rugged Dre Louris they go in with "gameplans" and they watch tape to get an advantage over opponents, which is why you may see some awkward techniques. Both fighters here have very unorthodox styles and they were each attempting to be creative and out-think the other.
I understand being creative but it's also culture, meaning I love alot of things bout brazil but the wrestling is not good over there, they had helio gracie bottom jiu jitsu influence too
There judo I think has to be in the top 5 of thee world as far as Olympic and world championships medals ranking, Japan 1, France 2, Russia/ Soviet Union 3, Brazil maybe 4....
But it's funny with the gracie family split in top vs bottom, rickson trained under rolls and he works both top and button but helio side works the bottom and carlos and carlson side works more of the top
I think its great. i wish it was encouraged more. Everytime ive tried to develop a game from turtle it actually has backlashed because every coach ive had would think that I blindly have no clue as to what im trying to accomplish and yell at me everytime I turtle. So therefore ive never been in an environment where I can actively try and pursue that kind of game.
Onpy a man like Terere could have caused a man to have a defense like this... ... Or maybe it was that woman yelling like nails on a chalkboard throughout the whole video...
Haha, what's this guy's motive with this style? Even when he has an opportunity to reverse or attack he reverts back to his turtle. I think he wants to love your head with his butt
Being a BJJ practitioner I have to admire their skill...but MAN WAS THAT BORING!!! They are killing the whole martial art aspect with this kind of "fighting". I understand how good they are but if I saw this 10 years ago I would NEVER start doing Jiu Jitsu....
I would say if anything it's the rules of the sport that are causing people to develop styles of jiu jitsu that work the point system to their advantage. Telles' style is very relaxed and his style helped him neutralize the more aggressive styles of jiu jitsu. He's been around competing at black belt for over 13 years and has placed at many big tournaments including Pan-Ams; and at 38 years-old he finally won the Worlds at No Gi in 2013. It's rare you see someone his age competing with the young guys.
***** Have to say though that Turtle guard is anything but a point scoring system. Playing turtle guard you give up advantages like crazy, your sweeps are usually not counted as sweeps... if there is a guard that doesn't work the point system, that's got to be it.
Telles has fought MMA. This was not how he approached that competition. This is a sport, and his ideas are unique. He could use traditional techniques and beat 99% of blackbelts. But at this super high level, this relaxed style has allowed him to continue to enter the 18-29 category and stay relatively uninjured. If his opponent makes a mistake, he's quick to take advantage.
Otavio Almeida If you'd actually watch the fight you'd notice that he got choked off of a worm guard sweep, his turtle guard was 100% effective (at staving off passes) for the duration of the fight.
Eduardo Telles showing his mastery of a system that doesn't get enough attention from newer generations. What a pleasure to watch!
Could not agree more!!!
No one really moves like him. Such an interesting style.
so nice to see two gentlemen smiling in the middle of an heated final at 8:40
My coach thought I was crazy that I wanted to model my game after Eduardo Telles but eventually he gave into the idea. Man’s a legend. ✊✊✊
Turtle Zeus. I’m sure you’ve seen them but check out Priit Mihkeson’s videos about turtle position.
Keep doing Bro, same thing with me, I'm the only I know among training partners who do this game.
Yo players. Where can I learn more about this style?
How is this working out? I just keep getting submitted 😭

An amazing display of modern defensive mechanisms existing today in the sport of BJJ.

Can the Turtle Guard be offensive or is it just to escape?
It can be offensive with at least half a dozen sweeps and submissions.

Nerales to submit Keenan off of his title guard but Keenan is too good for that but not good enough to get through telles’ turtle gaurd
