  • This clip features a bunch of trains all around Welch, WV along the Norfolk Southern Pocahontas District in June of 2023.
We move from west to east, starting with the bridge by the west portal of the tunnel, and catch an empty ethanol train and lite pushers.
Moving to the east portal, we catch 4 freights and a set of pushers, led by NS 8103 the NW Heritage Locomotive.
Moving further east to the Control Point of Welch, two coal trains and two pusher sets, one of which with NS 8103, are viewed.
Lastly, around the corner from the Welch CP at Maitland, 18M is seen climbing the hill.

I’ll be driving through Welch in a couple weeks. Want to spend a couple hours trackside. Will be early Sunday morning. Is it a busy line and is the location safe?

The location is safe and overall the line is fairly busy: 20-30 trains per 24hrs plus some helper moves. A couple of hours could yield a half-dozen moves or absolutely nothing. Hopefully you'll catch a few at least!
