From a South Korean perspective, most of us recognize as North Korean regime and people different. What this means is, we are the same people from a ethnic group. So there's no reason that we don't welcome defectors.
My heart goes out to those brave souls willing to leave everything behind for something they aren't even sure is there for them. And I appreciate the selfless people who dedicate their lives to helping defectors.

You could see them looking really scared in the CCTV footage after he had gotten away because they knew what was coming next for them. There are other North Korean military defectors who say those soldiers were almost certainly sent away to camps if not killed.

Because the border between North and South Korea is one of the most heavily militarised border in the world.
And also it can be pretty far from his camp so he decided to move there. Also this border is guarded less (I guess) because China returns defectors.
