      THE THING is sometimes I fell Mariko was ass to him since the beginning of their marriage because of her family situation, and she kind of made him insecure that he is not up to her level, which I think made him treat her like trash, I am not saying it is an excuse, but back then he had a reason for it and can't say it out loud because it would be pettiness to say my wife doesn't love me right? Toranaga had to lose a general to further cement the idea of his defeat.
    However 3 generals raised their voice in defiance, it is within this moment that Hiromatsu took the decisive step to sacrifice his life for Toranaga’s cause. Saving Toranaga from losing 3 generals and also fooling Osaka into believing Toranaga’s march to defeat is real.

    The seppuku wasn't prearranged, but the generals were rebelling and putting the plan in jeopardy with their resistance. Hiromatsu didn't know what the plan was, but he did know there was one, and if Toranaga keeps insisting he's surrendering, then Hiromatsu knows its important to the plan. As Toranaga's #1 guy, he can't allow things to get derailed by this sudden resistance...so he pulls the seppuku card in order to stop everyone in their tracks. Once that happened, both of them know that Toranaga has to stick to his guns, and Hiromatsu has to go through with it. It was already decided (figuratively speaking) the moment Hiromatsu made the threat. The moment was so emotional between them because they were suddenly saying goodbye after all this time, with no other good options. So, what looks like Hiromatsu taking a stand against Toranaga is really him making the ultimate sacrifice to ensure Toranaga's plan will work.

      Hiromatsu said
      ”Use my life to deceive the enemy.
      If you reject my admonition and order me to commit seppuku, my chief vassal, then Ishidou will surely believe in your surrender."
      Toranaga is faced with a difficult choice by Hiromatsu.
      Should he lose the life of his most trusted vassal here?
      But he knew that this method would surely deceive Ishidou.

    Buntaro never understood that Mariko was asking for death as something for herself. She was grieving her family behind her "fence" but she was duty bound so she never was free. Him offering they seppeku together defeats the purpose of her truly doing the act for herself for her own relief.

I guess not, or there are too many nuances and details, in contrast to every character that we eventually end up picking what fits us and side with that side of reality. Picky loyalty is what she had, giving it up to a barbarian shortly after her husband has been left behind to die is not respectable nor cherishable. Her family was killed because her father committed a grave act of treason. If you are able to abstract your opinion of Mariko from the great performance of Anna Sawai, there is nothing honorable about her, as she is ultimately a prideful, selfish hypocrite at best. As the father, so the daughter.

      @a_kmza 5 месяцев назад +6

      @@JazzyBelle611 Everybody seems to think the husband knew that she was seeking death to escape him, despite the whole reveal of her wish being in the episode that she explains the eightfold fence. When she would ask him to kill herself she presented it as doing it so she could do it for her family that she lost. Of course she wouldn't tell him to his face "I want to kill myself because I hate being stuck to you." so every time he denied it he thought he was doing her a mercy by telling her to live and hopefully with time she would come to forgive herself for what happened with her family. It wasn't until the tea ceremony that she finally told him and he understood why she wanted to kill herself. It wasn't because she wanted death she wanted to be away from him. Despite not knowing this though it's clear Mariko was cold to him during the marriage. In small hints you can see it where he walks in on her laughing with their child and then instantly turns to ice. He's unforgiveable for being an abuser but he was pushed into it by her constant ice routine. She thought herself better than him and even lamented to her friend why did her father choose someone so bad for her to marry and that probably leaked through into their interactions which caused him to crash out and react by taking it out on her. Again, it's obvious and plain as day that the husband had no idea that by denying her death he wasn't saving her or offering her a mercy. He was unknowingly being a villain in everybody's eyes by forcing her to live her life chained to him.

  • @Kiu_8
    @Kiu_8 5 месяцев назад +381

    Tea ceremony context from my rusty knowledge about the subject: entering that room makes them become equals and Buntaro has to humble himself by literally lowering himself in the process (that’s why the room is so small), no matter how high above her he is, part of the ceremony revolves around that notion, when Mariko spins the bowl, it’s because she is offering the prettiest side of it towards him, showing both respect and, if not love, appreciation both for his skills and for his gesture, as for her rejection, part of it is the mistreatment, yes, but it’s also the fact that she is from a lineage that’s far above him, so, when she said the life thing, it’s because she aspired to bigger things that she simply couldn’t reach due to her tie with him, as for the ikebana arrangement behind them, the red camellia (tsubaki) historically symbolized a noble death among Japanese warriors and samurai but it also represents love.
    17:36
    Those stares and that blink has lead many to believe that he understood that his death wouldn’t be in vain, it’d help Toranaga continue playing this facade of accepting becoming a loser and, alongside that, he figured that he’d die sooner or later anyways, so, why not show loyalty to him until his dying breath as well as helping his lord achieve his goals whilst simultaneously teaching his son a lesson in humility?
    The acting from every single member of this cast has been stellar and they deserve countless awards for their work.

    I think Hiromatsu read the room and saw that there was a bunch of dissent in the room and he knew taht everyone needed to step behind Toranaga and follow his plan. It wasn't part of the original plan for Hiromatsu to kill himself but in his last moments he saw that he needed to make everyone scared of defying Toranaga and that by killing himself they wont dissent. And Toranga and his eyes wee looks and secret code like he knows what he's donig and he is going to lose his best friend. In the previous episode he said winning this war is costing him a lot. Hiromatsu sacrificing his life wasn't apart of the original plan. Toranaga needed his 3 generals to pledge their loyalty/allegiance on paper so that the plan could continue. But he also had already suspected that he was losing them so when they ultimately spoke out against him and were prepared to revolt against him, it confirmed his suspicion which also put his plan in jeopardy. Hiromatsu reading the room, acts quickly and makes the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the plan continues. Toranaga doesn't lose his 3 generals and the idea/image that Toranaga is completely "defeated" is cemented so that Crimson Sky can truly commence.

I feel like she could have acted more maturely and at least should have tried to give him a chance and are we forgetting the fact that she pretends to believe in god and considers herself to be a Christian but still cheats on her husband and wants to die everyday? This makes her such a big hypocrite honestly.
      Her character is actually annoying to me and I can't believe how this story has made me sympathize with an abusive man over her...
      I don't think just because you're a woman you should take another woman's side but that's what most people do unfortunately!

    The whole episode you see Torunaga being assisted by someone to stand or walk; that last part showed him getting up and walking with no assistance - so yeah, it was a ruse.
    And I think Hiromatsu's act at the end is a slap to Blackthorne's statement to Mariko - that sometimes, loyalty IS suicide.

    Great episode. Thematically it also mirrors the story arc of what happened between Blackthorne and his gardener. The servant has to die in order to make their master see reason. Only in Toranaga's case, he only put on a deception to fool everyone in Osaka and that meant fooling his retainers as well, otherwise the spies would uncover his true intentions eventually. Toda either guesses this or still didn't know, but he framed his seppuku in a way such that only he died right then, thus saving all the other retainers who Toranaga would definitely need later. Show's great, makes you think about the characters' motivations.

    Omi addresses Yabushigge informally, just calling him Uncle instead of Lord, like he did when they first met. Yabu even responds to it right away "What do you want?!" instead of being offended by it. He's acknowledging his opinion and letting him speak his mind, seeing his nephew's got game. I think Hiromatsu and Nagakado's deaths have shook Omi. He's realizing that he's in over his head, his young dumb ambitions meeting reality. He's genuinely worried about his uncle not only as his patron protector, but as his few remaining family members.

    I think the subterfuge is easier to see, if you think about the world they live in. Toronaga has spies everywhere feeding him information, so he knows that his enemies do as well, watching everything that happens in Edo and then reporting back to Osaka.
    Toronaga is a feared because of his intellect and his bloodline, so when they hear word the he is going to give up without a fight, no one in their right mind would think of it as anything other than a ploy. Toronaga knowing this pretends to act sickly and not attend his own sons funeral because of it knowing that word would get back to them giving some weight to the claim he would surrender.
    Toronage then brings all his vassals to pledge their loyalty knowing that some of them wouldn't and was absolutely ready to sacrifice a few of them to prove unconditionally that he plans to surrender. At the meeting when these things start to develop Hiromatzu immediately understands the ploy and offered himself instead knowing that his sacrifice being his best friend and mentor for decades would cement toronagas plans and that this would be the best way he can serve his lord in his mind.
    As for the Subbuku and seconding in general, its not a disrespect to be asked to second, it would be considered a great honour and would generally be performed by a loved one or someone who you deeply respect. The idea is to open your belly to show that you yourself would be willing to die for your belief, honour, dishonour etc. and your second would end your suffering as a mark of respect. You are not required to have a second and many chose not to and would just bleed their guts out on the floor in agony, but that kinda ruins the mood so wasn't often done.

    Hiromatsu dying so to gives the idea Toranaga truly has fallen, all of this is just to see who will be with him and who will becomes traitor.. and then we got Yabushige running away. Problem solved. Cause it's no use to go to war, especially after Toranaga has lost most of his men due to the earthquake, then you need to deal with a thorn on your site too. If he go to war like that, he surely lose.

She is a self serving classist and depressed narcissist. The amount of torture she put Buntaro though was immeasurable. He deserved someone better than that cheating ticking time bomb who was too much drowned in her own selfishness. 🤷🏻‍♂️
