  • It was a rollercoaster of a day here in Genoa, but after the World Sailing International Jury gave redress to the team for the no-fault collision moments after the start of Leg 7, it became a day of high emotion.
    At just after 1730 CEST, the five-strong crew onboard Mālama sailed into Genoa to be welcomed by the huge crowd lining the dock, to lift the trophy, and be crowned winners of The Ocean Race 2022-23.

    Not the initial onboard reaction I expected but that's the difference between winning it on the water and via jury decision. Very well deserved and without doubt. Congrats!

      They only needed a single point, they would have got that but for the obvious event.

    bravo! to Chuckster and the band! I followed the race the entire way, it was a real treat to see you win. I sure wish there would have been live youtube coverage of the arrivals for each of the legs. It would have made it so much better for the folks outside of Europe

    Thank heavens! So happy for all of you - not the way you wanted to win - for any sailor - but you stayed true to the Team and came through in the end - the biggest congrats to everyone involved including all the competitors.

    You guys have always been winners from day one. Now 11th Hour Racing has a much larger platform to work on the health of the earth, the oceans and the land -- and that includes composting! You are still our local hero here in Bristol, Rhode Island but now you can add National Treasure to your resume. Congrats to you all. What an incredible tight team. Onward!

    I just want to shout out to the video editor for that last bit of "team daddy" Mark, "you there? can you hear me?", with the crew obliviously playing like a bunch of 5 year olds. Reminds me of my mother at the screen door shouting for me to come in.
    Brilliant.
    (p.s. sailing is not F1, or any other sport, and redress is not a "yank" thing ... let it go)

    I guess it's time to change how all races are run. F1, Indy Car, Ralley, etc. If your in the lead and someone hits you, you win by jury.

    I don't think this is the way to go... Really felt for the team after the incident but shit happens and this is not fair to the other teams not involved in the collision. Just imagine if this was the norm in F1 etc...

    • @jweitzenheimer
      @jweitzenheimer Год назад

      I'm confused as to why people keep using the F1 comparison. Its not the same sport, rules, environment, culture

    • @BilldalSWE
      @BilldalSWE Год назад

      @@jweitzenheimer Of course it's not the same sport and rules. That's why it's called a comparison... Want to compare with sailing instead of other sports? Fine. They've never done this in the Americas Cup despite similar incidents. Culture or not... And whats next? "Average points" awarded if the mast breaks on a leg etc?

    • @jweitzenheimer
      @jweitzenheimer Год назад

      @@BilldalSWE
      You better believe that if there is a collision in an Americas Cup race there would be redress asked for. I'm not interested in doing the research but I'd be surprised if there has been no incidents like this

      Utter nonsense. In the 2013 America's Cup Oracle was penalized 2 points *before the final even started* for rules infractions that occurred a year earlier in a different regatta. Basically this was 2 points of redress to New Zealand before the racing had even begun. Ultimately Oracle won in an amazing comeback but there was a moment towards the end when Oracle could have one more races on the water and still lost the cup.
      Penalties hearings are a regular part of the AC competition so I'm not sure what AC races you are watching because it's not the ones Ive been watching.
      And no, equipment failure is explicitly not covered by redress (as you would know if you bothered reading the rules you are complaining about). The rules for redress are very clear and very logical. In fact this decision, base purely on reading the rules was not a difficult one at all. It potentially had great ramifications but the decision was easy. With Holcim finishing 3rd in the final leg a lot of the angst disappeared.

    I don’t like the decision, basically wining in a boardroom and not on water sucks. However It is sort of yank way of doing sport everything is litigation. Team that has won my ❤ is team Malizia everything done in good spirits and beautiful sportsmanship. 👍💥👏 the finish was tarnished by that jury’s decision which was otherwise a fantastic race.

      @@jweitzenheimer there is nothing to get over budy, this is my opinion and clearly not yours, so if there is someone that needs to get over something it is you. 😂 11hour is a yank team that won the race in a boardroom and not on the water. That is the fact, and even if team Malizia finished last that team just resonated with me so yes they are number one in my eyes and don’t really care for your input. 👍💥👏

    It wasn't justice because the other teams did nothing wrong , the organisers did wrong , team Europe should not have been racing with you , it's a round the world race , they didn't finish one leg , and didn't start the next , it's not sail half way round the world race , you didn't race all the way round you retired ,
