Pain in the neck or back pain due to neerirakkam is a common problem for which people seek treatment in Ayurveda. Neerirakkam is the output of multiple body changes, climatic variations and increased humidity, lifestyle fluctuations, irregular diet, lack of proper exercise and disturbed sleep patterns. Ayurveda undertakes a functional assessment of the person’s body type (prakruthi), any structural problems faced by the person, other diseases for which treatment is being sought and the lifestyle of the person before prescribing a personalized treatment plan.
In the video, Dr. Rahul R Nair, MD (Ay), Consultant at Sitaram Ayurveda, speaks about the causes of thalaneerirakkam, symptoms shown by various patients and how it is treated in Ayurveda. Treatment of neerirakkam involves re-tuning the body to eliminate inflammation with the help of internal medication as well as external procedures. Internal medication is based on personalized evaluation of the body and its conditions. External Ayurvedic procedures include talam to cool the shirasu (head) and brain in order to stabilize the inflammation. Administration of Nasyam in the right doses and with correct timing based on the body doshas is known to be very beneficial in reducing neerirakkam. Tailams and liniments for localized relief from inflammation and pranayama or yoga to calm the mind are also prescribed as part of the treatment. There are no tablets for neerirakkam which can be taken in isolation to treat the condition.
