The Gospel of Suffering

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.”
Yes, it’s John 3:16, and I know lots of us know this verse off by heart, but I’m not convinced that any of us actually understand what Jesus was talking about. For starters, he says that we need to believe in him, ‘lifted up’, in the same way that the people of Israel once believed in the snake that Moses ‘lifted up’.
