  • My first fight with Saenchai back in 2009. Not quite as explosive as our second fight but still not a bad showing from myself, having just turned 22 years old and facing off against the best fighter on the planet. I lost a unanimous points decision but showed I can hang with the best.

    Love this fight, saenchai figured out your plan near the end of the fight, this is why he backed into the ropes cause he needed the extra stability, also it limited your range and limited your take down and trip abilities. He basically let you reach the edge of your reach then slowly figured out your angles of attacks before showing you a couple things about judo. Switching to grapples and presenting more kicks was a way to drain stamina and throw off your ability to setup your offense. Saenchai is a puzzle for sure, the range of his knowledge is incredible

    Hey guys I’m pretty new in the game and just be wondering how the styles of Muay Thai can differ so much between different organisations/fighters. Even though this fight is technically top notch I don’t get why you wouldn’t fight „faster“, more dynamic (overall more Dutch) against a fighter like saenchai. Wouldn’t it be more effective to circle & create angles instead of fighting „straight“? Are there unwritten rules that differ from country/organisation/fighters?

    • @miko9588
      @miko9588 2 года назад +6

      Just my opinion.
      Muay means kinda such a battle where you feel already dead. So you don't care about win or lose, you just practice and share some skill and artform and experience with the same soul as you are. You're both already dead because of the ancient battle tradition where you have no chance to survive if you're standing in the first line of the warriors' order.
      Thus muay tai totally disrespects any kind of avoiding the battle itself, and the battle itself is the position of the full risk of injury. Fighting is when you fight and hit each other, not when you run out of the distance of battle. In real life there may be no free space behind you. Muai fighter has no option to get out of the close combat situation.
      And also the training process is a lifestyle and a part of their everyday lives, so the process is much more important than the result of some certain fight. So there are a lot of things to keep in mind concerning respect and the fighting style itself.
      In this case, both Saenchai and Harrison give each other a chance to do their best job. They both let each other show their skill in this clear and clean form of muay tai itself, not in european boxing or kickboxing. They both know how to move around, they know a lot of steps, they both can fly across the whole ring. But their discussion is not about boxing match and belts and who gonna win today, it's about their life and tradition they love which was before them, goes on today and will continue in the ages.
      Shorter: both of them can do everything, but don't want to waste their time for jumpy all-around bu11$hit. Muay tai is all about real serious fight and top technical quality.

      @@miko9588 I think you probably are a pretty competent Thai fighter yourself to make such an astute observation. Both fighters stayed in the middle of the ring "in the pocket" to give them both the chance to show their skill. If anything i think Liam Harrison showed some respect to Senchai's ability to punish opponents who try to over extend and and bully him. That is why it became a technical battle. Watch a highlight reel of Senchai fighting against bigger more aggressive fighters and you will see the consistent theme is they tend to get knocked out!

      Saenchai is arguably the greatest counter puncher of all time. Bringing the fight to him (like so many do) almost guarantees a post-fight hospital visit. Liam knows this and avoided the hospital trip by drawing Saenchai in and making the fight a game of physical chess 👍🏻
