I don't think Mick Jones gets enough credit for the success of this band.
He could really sing play guitar and had an amazing presence
Anyone who's heard what they released after he left knows how much credit he deserved.
basically wrote 80% of the music. we saw what happened when he was sacked
if you want credit listen to BAD . This is the Clash
Topper, too
Wow Joe on Bass and Paul on vocals and bass...Everyone in the band sang ! No one had a full set of good teeth ! These guys really lived the punk underclass life
Joes father was a diplomat and they were upper middle class.
@@itsnotme3882
Only Joe
Paul was playing a regular guitar in this
@@itsnotme3882 er not really...just like many people 'functioning working class' . Joe's father was a diplomat & not poverty stricken ,but Strummer wasn't living off a family subsidy . And after his dreadful exam results (at private school) was fortunate he made a career in music ..
@@itsnotme3882 Joe's family was upper middle class. Joe was homeless by the time he was 20.
Topper is a human fucking metronome. All four of them were equally essential, but I never get sick of watching that guy kill it in the back. Fucking legend.
Sandy Pearlman said: Topper wasn't jut the best drummer he ever worked with, he was the best he ever saw.
❤❤❤
Definitely one of the top 5 drummers ever.
@@stephenstone8480 ¿y quiénes son los otros 4?
Topper really doesn't get enough credit for his drumming - he's the engine and the groove which makes this band something special
Agree!
He gets loads of credit - mainly by his band mates, and wrote the Casbah hit. Alas a junkie.
You are absolutely right!
Yes!!!
@@ronyanai4627 Then Terry came back. Alas a Chiropractor.
A very special band. Topper is one of the very best drummers, ever. Incredibly technique, touch, feel and imagination. When I listen to The Clash I often find myself listening especially to Topper's stick'n'kickwork...and I'm a guitarist/vocalist!
You said it. He was the only great musician in the band, that’s why they treated him like shit.
Matched only to Keith Moon!!!!
PERKUSION WAS ONE KRUPA AND BUDY RICH JAZZ ITS ALL ST
I absolutely love the fact the bass player couldn’t sing and play bass at the same time. Saw them twice in the early 80s. The Only Band That Matters.
Simonon, the bloke started in the band needing stickers on his bass to have the right notes, a year later: Guns of Brixton. Perhaps one of the best bass lines ever! And top of that reggae offbeat
Interesting that Joe plays bass live. Probably had trouble singing and playing. Topper is the bomb
A year later Simonon still couldn't play bass and sing at the same time on this one which is why he got Joe to play the riff.
album wise it's a good track, but live it was always shyte. Siminon could not reproduce it or elevate it the way Strummer could with his choons and vocals. I saw GOB live in Leics in 1980, no better than this.
It was a bit more than 'a year later' .1976- '79..
Strummer always 'took the bass' on 'Brixton live...
@@duffymoony ...I would agree - it's an outstanding Bassline (on record) .
the live versions played by Strummer were an approximation.. & Paul never got the tone right onstage (also like Joe he also struggled to remember lyrics )
Topper working skins with surgical precision, Mick plugged into his Roland Space Echo and Mesa/Boogie amp, Paul epitomizing urban cool, and a pre-dental work Joe testifying. There was a time they really were the only band that mattered.
they still are
The fury on paul in guns of brixton is amazing! 😍 this was a band with passion and fire..I'd like to live in those years.. long live to the clash!!
Paul brought the look, cool as f***!
He brought the looks but hell not the voice
metamoralia He brought the “Hollywood Punk” look. Lol!
@@lennonmoir6531 he's punk. Not a pop singer.
There's no comments on THIS? God, I remember this like it was yesterday. Fridays was almost uncanny in its ability to book emerging legends at their absolute prime and then draw fantastic performances out of them, and this is no exception. I mean, how could you be a 12 year old watching this and not be absolutely blown away? Thank god this is available for a new generation to see. A time machine, this-just magic.
Fridays had amazing musical guests.
Which helped make up for the fact that most of the sketch comedy was really bad.
But oh, Melanie Chartoff.
Michael Richards did some good bits.
F----'N A Right!
I saw the london calling tour...motor city roller rink, my life was forever changed.
Also saw this the night it aired...
I was there!!! :)
Word
Easily one of the all time greatest bands who actually lived the lifestyle they sang about. Know your rights is so on point in today's world.
At last I found a video where Strummer and Simonon reverse the instruments so far had only seen photos, The best band of all times!
All u had to do was search for guns of Brixton live
Great band? Yes absolutely. But THE best, ever? The Beatles. For without them, the Clash nor any other band would have existed.
@@danielgolus4600 - Bollocks. The Beatles are awesome, but to say no band would have existed w/o them is quite a stretch considering the multitude of other influences out there.
@@danielgolus4600 Easy now.
After the smiths ♥️
Topper Headon: a great drummer!
He's creating the energy that's making them jump all over the place. You can see how into the beats they are.
@@DanielPalmisano1 i think the copious amounts of cocaine helped with the jumping around but Topper was a phenomenal drummer
It's like they are running through their greatest hits on this show, when they are just playing songs off their latest album.
Strummer looking like he's just walked out of treblinka and someone's handed him a Tele
Simonon looks like he had been guarding him....
This is kind of a weird sounding performance because Guns of Brixton was built on a great bass line & you can’t hear it.
Clampdown is one of my favourite songs they did.
THE CLASH PLAYED 6 STRAIGHT NIGHT AT BONDS INTERNATIONAL NIGHCLUB IN 1980!! THEY WERE ON FIRE AT THIS TIME OF THEIR CAREER, MASTERED THEIR INSTUMENTS AND THE 3 GUYS WERE WRITING MIND SHATTERING TRACKS ON LONDON CALLING SANDINISTA AND COMBAT ROCK!! 3 CLASSIC ALBUMS!! AFTER THAT THEY BURNED OUT LIKE A FAST MOVING COMET HITTING THE EARTH AT A 1,000,000,000 MILES AN HOUR!!!
It was actually 17 shows in 8 days. And stop shouting.
Don't forget about TOPPER!
I was there for one of those shows. 18 years old. It's been downhill ever since.
@@Erdrick68 😂
WOW!! topper on clampdown is a real treat to the ears and eyes. unbelievable playing, especially listen to the kick drum on the bridge!!! used to play clampdown in a band I was in from Philly called the Von Cools, and just loved playing it, kicking the shit out of my drum kit.also sang the lead vocal on this song and the Rezillos song "bad guy reaction" which also has a great drum part, a real basher!! we actually did the the Rezillos album in it's entirety, this was in 1980-81........ great time to be in a band, awesome memories.
Definitely watched this on TV as high school senior in 1980 ... I still say they are the only band that matters, whenever the opportunity arises.
For the guitar Geeks watching note that Joe and Mick are playing through most likely rented Mesa Boogie Mark 1 amps with the stock Altec-Lansing speakers going into Marshall half stacks and somebody is rocking a rolling space Echo unit sounds great but it must have been hella loud on that stage
I was fortunate to be a teenager living in the 1980s UK , with UK bands : THE CLASH, THE SMITHS, THE JAM, i wouldn't swap it for any other decade, " Joe Strummer R.I.P "
My fav 3 bands ( Jam / Smiths / Clash ). Put Echo & the Bunnymen in there as well. ...and I was there too ( 80’s --but not in the UK -so u are indeed the lucky one).
My 3 Box Sets of 7 inch singles. The Clash,The Jam and The Smiths. The Best.Great time to be young
Love how they hand off the Telecaster for the next song.
God, I wish I could go back in time and see them live
Shows like these justify the whole excistence of youtube
An absolute Alpha band. I remember the first time I heard them.......I was blown away and still am......
Give Joe another line.
Absolutely class band
Forever etched in time. Dare I say the coolest band every?
This is more a "rock" version of these instead of the reggae versions that are on the album.
Bruce Springsteen or the Clash who copied who?
Clapdown...simply magnificent. The Clash on the cusp of huge American success. Top of their game.
Paul Simonon looking sharp and simultaneously like he’s just been dragged from a street fight!
God I remember this, Fridays, for such a short lived show had such amazing musical guests.
skinny English boys with bad teeth...coolest shit ever
Great clip this...Speeding skinhead Joe, Mick in vest and purple pantaloons, Paul a young Marlon Brando and Topper just killing it. I guess it's USA it's an amazing tv performance
This was one hell of a band.
Clampdown! One of my favourite songs ever. By anyone!
Love that solid drumming so much!
Gotta love Mick’s Brothel Creepers(shoes) in this!!
STP Bassist wears them as well ........Leo .................
Wow Paul's a pretty solid guitarist as well as a solid bassist. Incredibly underrated as far as I'm concerned.
Lol what? He's not playing anything here, just strumming along to the rhythm! I love Paul to bits but he's never been a guitarist, or even claimed to be one, he simply couldn't play the bassline of GOB and sing at the same time so they switched instruments with Joe
Is not a "solid" bassist! Is amazing!. And his performance here shows he's pretty solid in another issues...
Haha! No.........
Paul isn’t exactly a solid player. I think it’s well documented that he had limited skills and basically learned on the job.
@@DanielGonzalez-tw8nu Yeah but he still plays better than that would lead you to believe.
God Bless all the Punks in the world !!!
Luv The Clash, their lyrics and their meanings, energy on stage. We still need them around today more than ever!!! Thanks for sharing these two great songs!!! I will sub...
kinda mashed up version from guns...
liked the original more.
but hey.. its the clash...:)
Joe looks like he is auditioning for Trainspotting.
I do think Topper may well have been a huge influence on Larry Mullen Jnr on tunes like Pride, New years day..Wire and so many more U2 tunes
The song beats international ripped off, saw them live in Cardiff back in the day, brilliant band
Not ''ripped off'' it was a sample.
You saw The Clash, or Beats International........?
THATS WHEN MUSIC WAS MUSIC! 80s
Good ol' micky gallagher
Topper is fantastic - he was a jazz drummer just for the record.
A protest band that never sold out to the establishment.
Great version of Clampdown!
Para mi uno de los mejores grupos .... The Clash !!!! Irrepetibles !!!!
and Larry David was back stage asking why is the band so Loud?
Where do you get your information?
lol I could only imagine if Paul Simonon when on about doing his own solo stuff xD after clash had breaken up
Watch Paul from 2:01- 2:05 - so Fucking smooth and in the zone!!
No too sure about Mick's purple trousers!
The only band that matters.
I read that after the Clash finished their last song half the studio audience left even though Fridays still had a while to run...
Paul is brilliant. And Strummer on the wicked bass is magic! The Only Band That Ever Mattered!
Topper - what an insane drummer
From April 25, 1980
Can't believe I've never seen this before. Amazing performance, much better than their SNL show in 1982 which was on a much smaller stage that just made it look cluttered AF. I'd never seen Paul play guitar before.
I was In Brixton, and saw aglassing, very violent
the only band that matters
Legends!!!!
Friday's was an awesome show that had many great band's that performed on it.
My understanding of this was that Paul could not play bass or guitar while singing anything other than backup vocals. So they swapped out with Joe on bass. Notice Paul plays no guitar while singing on Guns of Brixton. Only when no vocals are going on.
Good to see Them in very High Quality!...Thanks! :) I like London Calling's Version of "Clampdown",but this is better...Amazing Performance! :P And the Guys ran so fast in the end...:) Paul looked cool in black...looks great,as always ;) and I like Joe's red socks too. :D
Topper is a great drummer.
Awesome performance!
Got to see them once, early 80s in Seattle at the Kingdome, They opened for The Who and stole the show!!
Was there 1982 Who were amazing but the Clash blew them away
Joe looks like he's in some sort of spastic trance during Clampdown
Paul on Joe's Tele and Joe on Paul's P-Bass for Guns of Brixton. Cool. I think Guns is written by Paul. Anyway, now I know why I can play Guns of Brixton...Paul never got to worried about making music too fussy and complicated. Just tight. Saying that the recording here isn't great and makes them sound poorly timed...they are not, it's the recording.
Joe Strummer... Rest in peace...My Brother!
Topper delivering the goods!!!!
Shame the keyboardist doesn't get any airtime, big part of sound field on clampdown. Such a great song and performance.
How much louder the band becomes when the Bass player takes the Bass back. Even if you did not know who's who you would know the second song is the proper band.
was he even singing in English on the first song, it was washy. I was thinking a lip-synching until I saw the keyboardist back there.
Love this Performance always have loved the clash
The Clash were genius. Everyone was equally as talented & they all got their time to shine individually, as well as collectively.
A truly rare combination.
shoutout to the sound engineer who brought in sounds as spaced as Mellors front teeth.. the video quality here is amazing yet the grainy minecraft-like video from the other link was easier to listen
Guns of Brixton sounded ordinary, Clampdown was good. Topper at his best, top drummer.
Rip joe mick topper paul will miss you rock on in heaven joe!!!❤🎉😢😊
I cant describe how much this band means to me
Joe Strummer is Playing Bass Guitar on Guns of Brixton!
Watch Carefully to The Video!
this was one of their better performances... and it still wasn't very good. don't get me wrong. i really enjoy their music but they were writers, not players.
Please upload Buster Poindexter when he did this show ..
I love The Guns of Brixton - and The Clash!. But that was some poor recording
Joe is laying the Bass Line Down Mint Have Mercy The Stage Back Drop is a Nuclear Power Plant !
Badd ass when Mick cues Joe at 4:41 to get on the Mic ..
Effortless Cool.
Rarity with Joe Strummer playing bass and not singing lead vocals.
I love how this is Paul's song, Mick and Joe take a backseat and just him fucking go all out.
My all-time favorite Clash song is GoB 🍻
This video make clear that The Clash didn't use their beauty to grow in their careers...
This does not sound one bit like the studio version, it actually sucks. amd I love this song.
"Guns" did not gel in this performance, but the rest was good.
I love that woman dacing!
I AM THAT WOMAN DANCING! I still have the turquoise dress and Clash armband!
the clash es re buena banda porque todos los de la banda tocan re bien sus instrumentos y porque tenian contenido de protesta en sus canciones
No better band. Best nights ever were spent seeing The Clash at Bonds!
cool to see Joe play the bass
