I've never thought that, my mom had me help her do dishes and mopping since as long as I can remember (6 yrs old). I always tell people, kids and pets are smart. If you treat a kid like a little person, they will be responsible. Of course, lower your expectations and give them tasks that they can manage. The one thing my mom didn't let me do until I was 16 was cooking because it's dangerous (and sewing with a machine she never let me lol).

But then the clothes would sit and pile up on the couch. This system prevents the pile up and gets the kids involved without too much complaining.
I'd love more from you like this! How do you do chores? How do you get everyone to bed on time? Out the door on time? How do you deal with picky eaters? How do you meal plan, shop, cook...?

Two comments: First, I’ve never gotten the idea of sorting laundry. Wash in cold water. Everything goes in together. Bravo! Easy-peasy!
Second, thank you for modeling your children working on household tasks. It drives me nuts when I see mothers who “have” to clean up after their children! Your THREE YEAR OLD is putting away his own clothes. Yes, teaching them is a chore. But once they learn it, you’ve given them responsibility for their own tasks permanently. Great example to all parents!

    • @Randoplants

It sets them up well for later in life, too. They'll likely have to do their own laundry at some point, so it makes sense to teach them how.

I can’t just throw everything in together. I wash lights and darks separately and bath towels and kitchen towels separately. I’ve tried mixing and it seems to make the lighter clothes dingy even using cold water. I’m a crazy sorter. Although, if I had 13 kids I’d definitely consider this method.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your children must not have made it to teenage years, who seem to have forgotten the previous 10-11 years of training as evident of their clothes being left on the floor for the dog's to use as padding for them to sleep on and then these now teenagers complain that dog hair is all over their clothes. (Coated German Shepherds). And yes, I am aware. That was a runon paragraph. Be glad I stopped. There was more.

    • @MrNotoriousROB
      @MrNotoriousROB 4 года назад +16

So, i don't know if you've ever handwashed anything or looked at the colour of your cold wash waste water but it is very evident that darks still loose colour with every wash (the water darkens from dark dyes). Whites are best looking white, not dingy; the same argument can be said for colours. The dyes from dark-dyed-wash water attach to the fibers on cotton and wools (natural fabrics), not so much synthetic fabrics, affecting the "brightness" of whites/colours. Then of course, there is the reasoning for sorting/separating for those who use bleach, it should be obvious as to why you wouldn't want to mix.
If everything can go in together is the mentality, then a very basic wardrobe of synthetic blend and lack luster apparel can be presumed ... i just hope the cleaning rags aren't included in this "Everything goes in together" laundry philosophy.
Totally awesome seeing kids doing chores!! ;)

    • @itsjustme.7059

Robert Junge I have to agree. I sort everything. I cringe to see someone washing bath towels and kitchen towels in with their clothing. I wash my bath towels and kitchen towels separately in a super hot sanitizing setting. I can’t just throw everything in. It makes lighter clothing look dingy.

So, an older mom here! I had 6 kids. Ended up with 2 washers and 2 dryers which helped me amazingly well!!! I still sorted by color (old fashioned, I guess) but I did have my children sort their dirty clothes and put their clean ones away. I love your method!!! Teaching your children at a young age is so good for them! I did mix my kids clothes but I had two sets of three so teenagers with toddlers. I chose to pair up their laundry-a teen with a toddler which cut down the time of figuring out whose clothes were whose because large ones were the teen; small ones the toddler. We hung anything worn from the waist up and folded all worn from the waist down (exception was underclothing and dress pants). I had my children find and bring empty hangers to the laundry room when it was their laundry day. You’ve come up with an amazing solution! I will be sharing it with my grown daughters who are moms. Well done! Thanks for posting!

So great that you were open to hear your husband’s ideas! My husband and daughter don’t sort their clothes. I have always sorted by colors as well as by agitation level. My clothes are in much better shape, and my whites/lighter colors are not dingy from dark clothes. In recent years, I’ve invested in clothes that are wrinkle-resistant, machine washable and are still professional (I work outside the home and travel for work). It’s great that you have empowered your kids to take responsibility for their things (and their appearance).

Honestly I especially enjoy that you've let your kids make decisions on how they wanted to store their cloths with the bins dressers or if they still wanted to use their closets because I know if I dident get that decision it would make me crazy. When I was about 16 I decided I hated folding so I hung everything and it was a good decision for specifically me and I think even small choices like this are great for kids to still feel like they have a say in what's happening to their own stuff. But I think it's also fantastic that your teaching all you kids how to do their own Laundry because that's an EXTREMELY important skill to learn.

Brilliant solution. Little kids love to help and be independent. I started mine cooking at 3, just packet cake mixes with different added ingredients each time and we made mini muffins that could be frozen. By the time they were 8, they could handle the oven by themselves. I never bought them snacks, they cooked for themselves, their friends were so jealous! They are now in their 20s and are all great cooks, my son is the best.

I'd learned from MOPS decades ago about a company (headed by moms) to use their pegboard system with discs of either words or stickers of specific chores/routine things the kids each needed to do each day. It was an easy and fun way for them to feel accomplished and see they contribute one way or the other to the household. Eventually the kids could cross train a sibling when they wanted to trade chores too. (Only if Mom allowed it, of course.) 🤔 I think I need to pull that pegboard and disc system out and sell it actually. The discs also were helpful for reward system as they could dip into one of the jars and have something meaningful.

That bin system is genius. I wish I’d seen this about 20 years ago! My kids started doing their own laundry at 5 and 7 after I had ear surgery and couldn’t bend over for a while to reach the dryer. My little one used a stepladder to reach. I pulled myself completely out of the process, so if one didn’t do laundry they didn’t have clean clothes. Another thing is that most of their clothes were second hand so they’d already been washed and dried several times, and all bleeding was already dealt with by someone else 😀 My daughter had strong opinions on what she wanted to wear by 18 months, so I didn’t even have to pick out clothes for her. She did have a very- let’s say avant-garde fashion sense. But hey, if I tried to make her coordinate, she would refuse to wear clothes. I had much bigger battles to fight, such as what to cook for supper!

We have been washing each kids clothes separately now for a few years and it makes it super duper manageable! Each kid has a colored towel they are responsible for with their load and each kid is assigned to a day or 2 assigned to a day--- makes laundry very manageable. Love the idea of labeling the basket when a child has clothes in the washer or dryer cause I do ask who's clothes are in there often enough to figure out a way to label them. Thks!

We use color coordinated baskets, but we foster and changing names out every few months is too much. Instead each room (our kids all have their own room) gets assigned a color so I don’t have to wonder, it’s just based on the color basket. We also do that with cups so we don’t have random cups everywhere.
