Holy Crap, I had no idea all of those towed vehicles fit inside the motor pool that way. 35 years later...Thanks Hasbro!

I didn't know that either until a few years ago about the towed vehicles. Ironically a buddy who also collected joes at the time before he grew out of them said if you go back and watch the old GiJoe Headquarters toy commercial they show the towed weapons on the motorpool side multiple times in the commercial... so i went back and looked and he was right. lol here's the commercial. ...

Great review! This was my fave GI Joe toy as a kid until I got the U.S.S. Flagg. Now if I compare the two, I spent way more time playing with this than the Flagg and I like it much better as it takes up half the space.

More Goodness: Not only does the motor pool have cutouts for FLAK, HAL, MMS, VAMP, WHIRLWIND, POLAR BEAR, RAM, etc....You can place the APC in front first and the rear wheel sets lock around the vertical pyramid tabs! I'm currently creating a multi-motor pool HQ!

@@HCC788 i posted about this in a different reply but I'll post it again here. I never knew about the towed vehicles either even tho i had the GiJoe HQ as a kid to and I had the flak cannon and other towed stuff. Ironically a buddy i grew up with who also played with joes with me but grew out of them said he knew about the towed vehicles from the commercial... I rewatched it and darned if he wasn't right .. it shows towed rigs in the motor pool side a few times during it. here's the commerical for the HQ showing them.

open cockpits are features, not bugs. the cobra troopers never hit anything when they fired, so you may as well maximize visibility not protection if your enemy never hits its target.

I enjoy all of your reviews and would love to show you my collection sometime!

I wish I could give this a double thumbs up! Your review and enthusiasm for this set are well warranted. IMHO nothing, I mean nothing, replaced this set! This set is the hallmark all other GI Joe ARAH sets should be compared against.
The Terror Drome is the Cobra equivalent! The Flagg pales in comparison; where does GI Joe's Army and Air Force vehicles get stored, not on the Flagg. Air Force landing gear and aircraft subframes cannot take the stress of carrier landings. If the Flagg's removable top sections had a motor pool underneath one, an opening bow, and an extendable ramp, it would have been better. If under the sections, there was a real brig and sleeping quarters, armory, and a CIC area, it would have been great.
The only thing that could make the Headquarters better would have been the inclusion of a playmat which provided additional suspension of disbelief play in the way of a top view down perspective of additional walls going back, a motor pool area, and maybe some spots to include more of 82-83 playsets and vehicles. Flip it over and it is not an interior, but a battlefield that extends from the front with more ideas for battle type play. The Headquarters is GI Joe's answer to the Death Star playset.

Packaging Duke with the headquarters would've been possible I mean in 1982 cobra coamnder was a mail away but that didn't stop Hasbro from packaging him with the Missel Comand headquarters.

Am I the only kid who pretended there was a roof, or a back wall, or more rooms and buildings, or just more to the toy instead of just what was presented? I didn't look at these things realistically. Star Wars playsets like the Death Star, Star Destroyer, and Ewok Village obviously were designed for someone to imagine there was more to it.

My friend had this Command Center and I had the Tactical battle platform. We put the platform behind it with the ramp dropping down onto the armory box. The control room on the platform became the air traffic control tower, and its weapons being so much higher fired over the top of the Command center. I really want both these sets today to customize with a matching paint job, to make it look like it's supposed to go together.

the 1983 headquarters looks a lot nicer than the one I had a kid. I had the 1992 headquarters play set.

@18:30 But then how would you play with it...? If it had said ah Roof as it were? That's like telling a child that wrestling is fake... any smart child would tell you "no shit its fake, thats half the fun".

The only drawback maybe would be the lack of foot pegs. No roof isn't a drawback. How would you play with it if it had a roof? The Ninja Turtles Sewer playset had holes in the walls so you can see in there and reach in there. It's not realistic because there were holes big enough to fit your hands in there. I mean, come on!

The vehicle lift is seriously flawed. A real lift lifts the vehicle by the corners, so a mechanic can take the wheels off, or comfortably go under and work on the car. This raises the entire floor area under the car while the vehicle is still on it's wheels. What's the point?

In spite of it's flaws and drawbacks I do still enjoy this playset I never owned one and still would like to own one how ever with gi joe retro toy wave comic out I hope they re issue this playset and fix it's flaws and hopefully adds a rear wall for the playset and a roof that's all I'm asking for

    • @christianhafer9819
