Five more finalists have joined the long list of LEGO BrickLink Designer Program sets, painting a picture that is becoming distinctly medieval.
Series 4’s selection of upcoming sets in the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program has been revealed, rounding out the lengthy list of every set in the program’s series so far. That is until Series 5, 6 and 7 have their sets picked out.
Every series of the BrickLink Designer Program (in its latest iteration) has now featured at least one Castle-adjacent build (with the exception of Series 2), and Series 4 includes two: Bricks_fan_uy’s Medieval Seaside Market and SleeplessNight’s Siege Encampment. (Hanwas’s The Riverside Scholars is also tangentially Castle-related, or at least fantasy-inspired.) That hasn’t escaped the notice of those with their finger on the pulse - at BrickLink or in the community.

It just seems to me like this is the overflow of demand for a more regular medieval/castle theme.
Even if you only like classic space, you’ve still consistently seen a space oriented theme be available from Lego over the years, including more modern additions of recent space technology.
There isn’t a theme that meets some of the general demand for castle stuff.
I think we could see a decrease in this saturation if we had a more regular castle theme, instead of the bi-annual, icons/ideas set release.

    • @arcturionblade1077
      @arcturionblade1077 2 месяца назад +8

Agreed. There is a growing demand for Castle and Kingdom theme sets that Lego isn't quite rising up to the task to meet, and the results of the latest rounds of the Bricklink Designer Program is evidence of that.

@@arcturionblade1077Perhaps the DnD line might be planned to expand into general fantasy. DnD is the baseline for a lot of fantasy, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw LEGO character designs getting rolled into the DnD aesthetic, and it functioning as a castle/medieval/fantasy theme.
I like a castle theme the more general it is. LEGO should be able to touch on all sorts of elements of fantasy. On the other hand, I think LEGO would like to put their own spin on stuff.
Overall, it is weird to see the lack of a medieval theme. I don’t know, maybe LEGO has a limited number of “fantasy” themes that they want on shelves.

I want high fantasy with Pink, Yellow, and Rainbows with Unicorns, Fairies, Elves, Knights in Shining Armor, and Wizards vs Vampires, Werewolves, Dragons, Warlocks, and Goblins, etc.

As a castle fan (I've got Lion Knight's Castle, Rivendell and specifically BDP Castle in the Forest and 2x Mountain Fortress), my perspective is that we were absolutely STARVED for real castle sets. Nexo Knights, while great for kids, was such a scourge for AFOLs! That's why we all threw all the money at the aforementioned sets, but, you are right, we've been satiated with large castles!

The program in it's current iteration has had four crowd votes but not delivered a single set yet. So those people who at the first round were clamoring for castles, trains and western sets, are still clamoring for them when round two is voting, when round three is voting and when round four is voting. Is it any surprise the same themes are being voted for in those rounds when people still don't have the sets in hand to satisfy the craving that drove round one results? I'm positive this will play out in the round 2 vs round 4 western train battle. My guess is the sales of the round two train will be much lower than they would have been now the (arguably) better round four version in on the table.

Even before the winners of Series 4 were announced, I had an inkling that castle fatigue was setting in, and I realized that if I don't make the next submission period, castle would reach market saturation. The bricklink designer program has a similar issue to lego ideas in terms of always having castle ideas/submissions. I now sort off lack space more more lego and none of the sets in the series interest me. Getting back to castle and pirate inspired, I would love to see a wave of these sets, the last regular castle theme was in 2014, they then tried nexo knights, the last pirate theme was some time ago however lego can only do a limited number of themes, which are Duplo, Disney (both star wars and princesses), Friends, city, icons (in all its forms), harry potter, technic and speed champions with a few others and sadly I can only see castle and pirates to be included in icons as massive sets as I can't see lego ditch any of those themes because they sell too well

I 100% agree that Lego should be taking advantage of this program as an incubator for new ideas, not just rehashing what is known to already work. I see so many interesting things in both programs that don't necessarily fit into what Lego has traditionally done. But maybe allow those quirky niches to find an audience. What particularly comes to mind are many of the amazing builds being done by women that could be described as "traditionally feminine" in nature. The Lego botanical have drawn a lot of people into the Lego AFOL fold that had been overlooked for many years by Lego Group. Yes, there are women who build trains, and castles, and space themes. But the for instance the Designer program mushroom house that is about to go into pre-sale is creating huge excitement in the female afol arena. If it sells out quickly (as I expect it will) maybe Lego could use that as a jumping off point for a miniature woodland sprite theme series. The program could also be used as a test for interest in interesting abstract "art for art's sake" sculpture.

1 - Your articles are brilliant 2 - Yes, why on Earth having LEGO received so many signs that dedicated Castle, Pirates, Trains themed sets are wanted, they still prefer to launch them occasionally under Ideas, Creator or Icons? It beats me out. Is it fear of what? They could suspend the themes after each two or three years to reflourish demand. Maybe the theory that they will not do dedicated themes for adults as there is an idea that kids don't like Castle, Pirates, and Trains? I dont't know, but it is frustrating! Why not making affordable nice priced sets for adults? They should know either way, adults do buy sets aimed to children. Like City sets. I know I do. My favorite theme. PS - Maybe its not fear, its Greed.

Lego themselves first pick among the Lego Ideas (10K+ votes), then the BrickLink Designer program gets the "scraps". Lego can decide to be balanced all it wants on their initial production decisions. I don't mind the popularity contest of the Designer program at all at the BrickLink Designer program. While I do wish there were more fans of Modular houses, at least Lego produces one of these per year keeping the sets consistently styled and within the same time period - I can live with that. I can certainly tolerate the trains and castles rising to the top. I do think that better designers are likely to get repeat votes. I do wish everyone to continue to participate regardless. Its a shame I can't seem to see what I voted for in the first place after the winners are selected. I haven't read the TOS on the Lego Ideas submissions but I don't recall seeing their IP lines like Star Wars show up. So there seems to be filters already applied as layers on top of the overall experience. There have been some really fantastic seafaring ships but weirdly enough we see a fishing boat picked but those main ships passed upon in later seasons. I bought that fishing boat and thinks its fine.
As potentially rude as this sounds, I think this year was just stock full of really really good designs and I think the winners were right up there with many others. The fact these landed by repeat designers isn't a coincidence, its due to their quality. Lego might just want to take a hint and hire them onto their staff we'd all probably benefit from that observation longer term. By doing this, they would improve the quality of their castle and train lines and let other designers rise up in the BrickLink programs of the future. Problem solved. Its not so much about balance its about top talent being recognized. Do more than just watch them win BLD programs consistently. Let them join the club. No offense to the existing Lego designer staff of course but lets be honest. Many of these designers are raising the bar for the themes they are competing in. I appreciate the vast numbers of sets we get to vote upon. I think even though sets are not chosen as winners its really respectful to a lot of designers just to see their sets accepted. To be fair, maybe a lot of these top quality designers are fully time employed doing something they wouldn't give up for being invited to join Lego permanently. I'd understand that. Perhaps you could place the top consistent winners into some league of champions on their own where they are simply invited back to offer sets such that everyone else doesn't have to compete with them to allow for more variety. Or you say if you win one season you have to take a one season off as a break. I'm not really too keen on the idea of forced breaks. I say let the chips fall with the invisible hand. What I would be warry of, and I don't think we've seen ANY evidence of is some kind of rigging, where a bunch of fake accounts are created to help someone win. One disadvantage of separating votes from money is that its a bit more trustworthy voting wise when folks have to put their money where their mouth is. We could all vote for a spectacular set that most of us couldn't afford once offered. OOPS. So we have to be careful what we wish for when voting. Perhaps another way to say this is they could have category(theme) and class(number of bricks) leagues within the series competitions. Maybe they should commit to building sets of varying sizes and split the votes apart for each size they want to offer. Rather than have it be a free for all popularity thing. We could have carve outs for Castle, Trains, and any others deserving to be offered its own competition. Then everything that doesn't fit those rigid themes, can go into the Free for All voting category. By splitting votes by size its like many sports with weight classifications. We could have a fight among the feather weights (pieces under 250), light weight (

It’s also a collector based economic decision. Limits drive up more demand. It may not be today that all of these sets are desired but in 5 years these sets will 4x or more in price. This also gives Lego valuable real time data about what is desirable to help them make decisions about future themes. As to no castle sets now in mass production? There are. Wow, really well analyzed and looked at from different angles. I'm a child of the 80s, my first set was the "Lioncastle" so of course I belong to the target group that the BDP currently serves. Of course I'm very happy that it's like that there
fantastic sets about knights, pirates, westerns but as you say, why doesn't Lego serve this themed series themselves? There can hardly be a better indicator for Lego. Anyway, I left some money in the BDP in February and will also buy some sets again for the next two series.
    One more time
    Praise for the great video!

I really wanted the Sushi Restaurant, and it seems more people liked it a lot. I'm into the castle theme, not into big castles, but I'm going to skip series 4. The castle designs from series 4 look like sets that need to be intergrated into a large diorama which I don't have (yet).

The lack of new minifig parts and prints for these sets hold them back. Need more new peasants/civilians/forestmen in different colors than red for my sets along with new faction flags. These just populate the Castle table with the same soldiers and peasant torsos.

A castle theme would mostly not fulfill the needs for detailed medieval buildings. It would just be a simplier play theme.
Except if Lego creates a new concept.

You mentioned that castle fans’ wallets are getting tapped out from all of these expensive sets - herein lies the genius of The Lego Group - they know they people are willing to pay big money for castle sets on the aftermarket - so they have created a product that captures money that may have ended up in the aftermarket.
This is the same reason we are seeing so many very large and expensive mainstream sets - The Lego Group knows that a select group of people are willing into drop big money on single Lego sets - and they want to capture that money for themselves.

I'd really like to see a broader selection. I don't need a castle, or wild west, at all. and for $300 a set has to be extremely amazing and unique. I'm glad for those chosen, and I'm glad that the design are selling out, but it does make me question if I should even engage with the Bricklink Designer Program in the future since I'm clearly not the target audience

While I like that we get Castle things I don't know what to think that 4/5 finalists were finalists in previous editions. Some even didn't sell out fully. For me, from a review perspective, this would be a handicap on their work and the build would have to be REALLY good to pass in another edition.

Not much Trains, far too many Castles. Out of the five series there is just ONE train, the series 4 wild west train. I cant include the Trellis logging train because it is not on proper rails and its far more a wooden trellis than a train, a train needs CARRIAGES.

I think your point on castle fans ending up being taxed to hard, is very on point. A full theme running along side the bricklink designer program would be ideal.
However i think one thing people are either forgetting, or neglecting to realize, you can change or add something to your lego builds, if you feel something is missing. Stop complaining so much about the sets. Here i am referring to sets the lego group put out. It isn't helpful criticism.
Iets be honest the last few sets that lego have made, most of them have just been better and better.

I agree on the price thing... these are getting too expansive and they seem to be losing the low-cost options. I also agree Lego need to bring back a castle theme... I don't agree with the entire rest of the video. These are designs that are summitted and then VOTED on by the community. Maybe the community wants all the castles (and they are all very different by the way)/ trains/ buildings... it seems if the community wanted something "weird" as you put it, we would have it, but it seems as though no one is either designing them or voting for them, so they don't get made... Look, bottom line is the castle fans are starved for castle sets. We would love a new line but all we can seem to get are piecemeal sets and this type of sudo-Lego set. Don't try to take that away from us because you don't like the castle theme.

  • @BrickHQ

We need more unique and cheaper sets in the BDP
Lego should bring back the afol designer program sets
Lego needs to make a castle theme which includes cheaper sets also
Then the BDP will hopefully be better
13:54 Lego should bring residential houses back, now they only do modulars
What lego really needs to do is pay attention to the feedback also from people who aren't necessarily interested, not only the sales

You do realize they're voted on, right? It's not LEGO's eagerness to release them, if anything it feels like they're reluctant. The Lion's Knight Castle is massively popular and it's not only because it's an amazing set, but it's also the first castle set we've had in ages. The community clearly wants more castles and right now this is the best way to make that happen.

people voted and they want castles. now you could be mad that lego just simply hasnt released a castle line, that i understand. but people want them and the falcon castle was the first to sell out, so i have no problem making the bricklink series 1/5th castle. i do agree we could use smaller sets to balance them out, but i do love these new castles that have been released. the castle in the forest is by far my all time favorite build, and the new mountain fortress is also a wonderful piece to look at. along with the lion knights castle we have a lot of very large expensive builds. but they sell. most of the time when you here the loudest complaints, it does not reflect the opinion of the majority.
and if you look back on the offerings from brickling designers, it was clear some of the best designs were castles. if all 5 were castle sets, i would complain only for my wallet. i do wish one of the large ships made the cut, we certainly could use more pirate theme.
and as for certain designers being picked again, well yeah, they are clearly really good at what they do. it makes sense for them to be a better designer. doesnt guarantee, but it helps. many mocs are great looking, but if you sneeze on them they shatter. knowing a certain designer makes not only a great design but also a sturdy one will go a long way when being able to sell a lego set without the company spending a ton of time redesigning and restructuring it.

I love castle and almost can't get enough of it. The siege battle pack ist fantastic. The harbor doesn't interest me - in topic, detail, building technique, I think it is a rather uninteresting set, the little ship build is really lame and so are the minifigure designs. I'd have prefered a battle ship. In general the BDP should have more smaller sets, like the snack shack in S1 or the Camper (S2?3?) which are great :)

This is just an absurd take. First of all, the non castle stuff sat on Bricklink and didn't even sell. Maybe theyll produce it if you actually buy it. We basically have had THREE castles.
LEGO has produced many dozens of modulars over the years. Every Bricklink round has one or two as well, along with a small City style build. There have been far more trains and stations than castles. Just go to LEGO if you want your 89th recreation of a household object. In the whole anime/ steam punk genre we have multiple selections each round too. We've also had pirate stuff on there, and through LEGO.
Also, Bricklink only can make stuff from existing items. So, castle stuff will only be there while the life cycle of the castle sets on LEGO is in production. For the fist time in over a decade LEGO FINALLY produces a castle, and you a crying that fans make sets on Bricklink using the minifigures?
Frankly, while I'd love to have a city I think only elitist LEGO RUclipsrs can afford to dedicate their whole basement to a LEGO City layout.

Lego mismanages a LOT of stuff. The pricing on everything is absurd. The pandering to queer culture is absurd. The endless churn of star wars and harry potter sets. The in-store experience. The website that crashes every time there's an event that they themselves hyped up. Etc etc

There is really nothing unique about any of these BrickLink designer sets. They are required to use only currently available parts with no new molds, new prints, or new recolors (there could be a sticker sheet which would be exclusive). So you are spending a lot of money for what can be considered a glorified MOC. The sets look great for sure, but these are able to be pieced together fairly easily given the availability of the parts, and possibly for cheaper than buying the set itself, especially if you already have a large part collection already. I would never recommend buying one of these sets on the crazy after-market...
