    I love how you contrasted the arrival of Atreides on Arrakis with Paul putting his hand in the box. The box is a metaphor for Arrakis and there was only pain in it for the Atreides. The Reverend Mother said that an animal caught in a trap will gnaw off its own leg to escape. Paul Atreides was the animal caught in a trap and he gnawed off his own leg (lost his soul to a terrible purpose) to escape that trap.

      Him passing the test is more about how he exceeds the bene gesserits expectations. Overall, I think these movies were pretty faithful to the source material. Although the one thing that is missing a lot is Paul and Chani's relationship. I understand that they have to cut stuff out and change things from time to time, but I almost feel like they changed too much with Chani as a character.
    _MID-ISH SPOILERS FOR DUNE PART 2 AHEAD_
    In the book, she is Chani Kynes, daughter of Liet Kynes. She and Paul initially bond over the fact that the Emperor and House Harkonnen are responsible for the deaths of their fathers. Chani is Paul's biggest supporter, his confidant, and so much more.
    He might marry Princess Irulan to maintain control of the empire, but his heart always has been and always will be Chani's. His marriage to Irulan is a purely political thing. It's Chani that Paul has children with. It's their children that are his heirs. Chani is to Paul what Jessica was to Leto: pretty much his wife in all but name. The movie made it feel like Chani was on the outside looking in. Like him marrying Irulan was some sort of personal betrayal when it was anything but that. Paul doesn't love Irulan. He never has, he never will. Chani is still his partner, his confidant, and the love of his life.

      The change between book and movie is kind of jarring but exists to give the audience a view that helps them to see the horror in what is otherwise a really exciting revolution. Easy to get swept up in political/religious/ideological fervor and not realize how terrible the consequences could be until it’s too late. Chani helps to serve the same purpose as Paul’s visions: a grim reminder that revolutionary wars are still wars.

    I know Denis wanted to fulfill Herbert’s initial plan of having Paul as more an anti-hero, but honestly I couldn’t see him any other way but a hero reluctantly accepting his fate to do what needed to be done which in then made Chani seem more like an anti-hero in the way she couldn’t see that Paul truly didn’t want to cause any pain and massacre but had no other choice which if she truly loved him for who he is, she should support him regardless of her beliefs as she was present for everything and saw how he didn’t want to accept the role of Lisan AlGaib.

      This is one of the interesting moral questions the series asks. It's made pretty clear that the Holy War was the best outcome Paul saw, but he still manipulated the Fremen and caused countless deaths throughout the Imperium. In my opinion it still makes him a villain or, at the very least, an anti-hero.

      @treacherousjslither6920 5 месяцев назад

      Chani is right. The Fremen will leave their home to throw themselves at Paul's enemies, the great houses, and many will die. They're being manipulated and used. When the dust finally settles they may no longer exist.
