  • Within an hour of Santa Marta, Colombia, Tayrona National Park is home to beaches and wildlife. But, while it gets high praise from locals and tourists, is Tayrona National Natural Park worth it?
    In this video, we take a day trip to Tayrona National Park to find out if it's worth taking a bus, a long hike, and then a boat trip out of there.
    For us, budget traveling is essential, and we aren't sure if Tayrona National Park fits the mold. However, let us know what you think!
    Before you go, we highly recommend taking a scuba diving trip while in the Tayrona National Natural Park area. We personally recommend going with Caribean Pro Dive in Santa Marta.
    They have fantastic customer service and budget-friendly pricing.
    Here is the link to their website if you are interested in booking a scuba diving trip while in Santa Marta: www.caribbeanprodive.com/

    The insurance is something that is mandated by the government to all national parks. The insurance is like a medical insurance in case something happens to you such a coconut hit you, you got bit by an animal, you got a heart attack, etc... there are professionals there that can provide medical assistance. Yeah, I am sure the process is stupid and does not make any sense, but when we travel we have to adopt to other cultures and how people do things. In the USA we can be very spoiled. I am Colombian and grew up in the USA, and even moi can find myself being irritated when things don't function as smoothly, but that is part of the adventure of travel: adjusting to how others do things and to their culture. We have to be respectful (and I am not saying that the people doing this video are not) of wherever we go and realize we are in their territory and country, and we are the ones who need to adapt

      Delfina, that is why you book an all inclusive tour. The tour company asks for a scan of your passport the day before (via Whatsapp), and they handle everything. They pick you up at your hotel/hostel and drop you back off at the end of the day. You don't need to be vaccinated or bring your passport, but I would recommend bringing a photo of it. It is the same price as taking a bus and paying for the entrance fees and insurance, without the hassle or waiting.

    We just spent the most enjoyable day with the best tour guide on the hike to the beach! It is a rainforest so it is going to be muddy in some places. Our tour guide was so passionate about the beauty and very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna! We had lunch at one of the vendors near the beach, and enjoyed Piscina Beach before the hike back. It was a great adventure! I think the guide made all the difference! We loved it!

    I think your complaints are valid but the move is to stay the night and take the boat back to Taganga the next day. Cabo San Juan has a very cool vibe later in the day when a good portion of the crowd heads out.
    Also your complaints about the ingress into the park aren't typical. Looks like you had some confusion but I had no issues like that. The insurance is if you happen to need medical care during your visit.

    I appreciate this video so much!!!! I’m trying to plan my december trip to colombia and have researching all these different beaches in the cartagena, baranquilla, santa marta and tayrona área. Were there any “hidden” beaches you guys liked? Or even discovered beaches that were really nice??

    • @MaddieTravel
      @MaddieTravel  Год назад +2

      Thank you so much. The beaches in Tayrona are gorgeous, but just a lot of people. Once we left we spoke with someone who said that just past Cabo San Juan beach in Tayrona there's a huge beautiful beach that is usually empty. I believe its called Boca de Saco (not the nudist one, but near it), we never made it over there.
      We've heard great things about the islands near Cartagena, but unfortunately we didn't have time to get out to them.
      Santa Marta didn't have any great beaches and we've heard that baranquilla isn't worth the visit unless for festivals.
      In santa marta we had an apartment airbnb that had a pool on the roof and it was so nice to go swim and hang out up there since there wasn't a nice beach near town.
      Sorry that was a lot, but hopefully helpful, let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching and being a subscriber ♥️

      Jessica; the first beach in their video is Arecife; which is too dangerous to swim in. If you are going on a day trip, 90 minutes into the hike you will arrive at La Piscina; which is beautiful in its own right. 30 minutes later you are at Cabo San Juan, which is incredible. For the other amazing beaches (Playa Cristal, Bahia Concha, Nenguenge, Playa Brava, Playa Chengue), you can access them one at a time on very inexpensive day trips from Rodadero.

      Really, if you are a traveler and complain about everything , especially about people, logístic, etc and don't want to spend money (22 dollars a boat ride is not too much money, you are traveling). Your tickets to colombia from USA were expensive? You could walk instead of flying and complaint.
      You are going to a tropical forest (jungle) and complaint about being hot and humid.
      You complaint about the long hike just to get to the beach (there are horses and motorcycle service there you could take)
      In brief, you want to be a backpacker travelers with a luxury previleges.
      The only valid complaint is the issue at the entrance with the nonsense back and forth.
      In my opinion, this is a good video explaining before you go you must decide what type of adventure trip you want to experience.
      Thanks

You can stay at Tyrona beach area without going to Tyrona park. So you are right,I have not been there but I am not interested in making a long trip just to enjoy 2 hours of the beach. I would highly recommend running shoes; unless they are very expensive. There are very few slippery areas, but it is a 2 hour hike each way and your feet are going to be sore from rocks, the ground, twigs as well as walking 4 hours in them. Hiking boots or special footwear isn't needed.

    @JohnSmith-pk8st 5 месяцев назад +1

    I knew you were screwed in the first couple of minutes of the video. First, go in February or March, when it isn't rainy season. Second, book a tour. It will be $25-30 USD all inclusive. The day before you send a scan of your passport to the tour company; early morning you are picked up at your hotel in a bus and dropped off at the main entrance. You wait at the restaurant for 20 minutes or so while the tour company retrieves your tickets (no vaccinations needed and they deal with all of the insurance and other stuff) and you are off on your hike. It shouldn't take you more than 2 hours, so by 10:30am you are at Cabo San Juan, and you can relax until around 2pm. IF you don't feel like hiking the entire way back, you can take a horse 2/3 of the way for around $12 USD. The bus then drops you off back at your hotel. I've done the math and it costs exactly the same to go on your own as it does through a tour. Your experience would have been infinitely better; Tayrona is universally considered to be amazing for a reason...

    Why do you complain too much? Being honest is not with prepotency and derogation with a place or system that is hosting you. If you go to this beautiful place and complain like that, do not go. You could have an accurate idea if you were more educated and studied basic Spanish to comprehend the situation; you may present better information, so other people are informed. If you go to any place, try to learn some essential cultural awareness beforehand. You infered various fallacies in this video. As a rule of thumb, Colombians have an excellent service culture which you do not get. If you do not understand the language and cultural aspects, do not make inaccurate opinions.
