Beast mode Sorokin
When he's in the zone, he's as good as anybody and right now, he's in the zone. Thanks for the comment, skinggator. Always good to hear from you. LGI.
This team is very gritty. Sorokin was fabulous. We have a top-notch goalie and coach. Roy has managed to keep the team competitive. Despite facing challenges, including key injuries to players like Mathew Barzal, It's impressive how he's navigated these obstacles. And yes, I will give Lou credit for the pick-up of D-men the last 2 seasons. I absolutely love Romanov. I have been following him since his rookie debut here in Montreal, and I see such a great evolution into a top NHL defenseman. LGI
Watching Romanov develop as a quality NHL defenseman has been fun. He continues to become a better player. I also give Lou credit for how he's found defenseman the last two years to replace injured guys. The problem is, a) he didn't seek to improve the D before then and b) there's nobody in the organization who can be called up to step in. Thanks for the comment, Darrell. LGI.
Sometimes the goalie has to steal a game for you. Sorokin can do that for us on any given night.
He can and he did. Great to see. When he's on, he's as good as any goalie in the game. Right now, he's on. Thanks for the comment, Another_User_Name_. LGI
Also one more thing he is absolutely great I've watched all his tapes he's a very good player very good im soo happy he's here
It's been good to see. Thanks for the comments, corylennon2964. LGI
Gil, it's pretty simple. Sound defense and excellent goaltending! Thank goodness Sorokin is back! We'll need this same kind of magic against the Jets. I really believe we can give them a run for their money. Let's Go Islanders!!
I hope so, Tony. Winnipeg on the road will not be an easy opponent. Hope they play well. Thanks for the comment Tony and LGI
Gil I gotta say I'm very impressed with this teams defense especially on the PP
The PK has been much better. It's been encouraging to say the least. Thanks for the comment, corylennon2964. LGI
Lou doesn’t care..he’s going for it..ride Sorokin to the cup!!!!! LGI!!!!
Lou likes to go all in for a wild card every year. He may be a buyer at the deadline as much as that's exactly what the team shouldn't do. Thanks for the comment, theHowMan68. LGI
Gil, you do a fabulous job. One story idea I have is on the Bridgeport Islanders. They have been so bad for a number of years. Maybe some sort of report/piece on what has ailed them. Is it just bad drafting or something more? Crowds also have been going down at Bridgeport. Possibly steady this year. No real potential stars to watch. Thanks. Greg in Norwalk CT
It's a good idea, gregranger6241, and I can discuss it. The organization doesn't prioritize winning in Bridgeport as Lou said earlier this week. Thanks for the comment and LGI.
Great to see them playing well ! Great work Gil ! Ice Wars, , I will get a copy , i am probably one of the few guys old enough to have been a ranger fan when i was a lad the Isles did not exist . Fell in Love with the sweater first time i saw it . Rod Gilbert is my mothers cousin . Eddie Giacomin is why I tended while I played .
Thanks Robert. I'd love to hear what you think about the book once you've read it. I did interview Giacomin for the book. Very nice guy. Cool that your mom was related to Rod Gilbert. Thanks for the comment and LGI.
Gm Gil. The past couple of months have showed how much real impact Barzal and Dobson have had on victory. watching Barzal on the pp is downright maddening and without him the puck moves. He was drafted 9 years ago and has failed to materialize into an elite player and certainly isn't worth the nearly $9mil per season. The Isles are playing some of their best hockey ... i see this as proof that the Isles have more talent than they may realize ... All roads DO NOT run through Barzal for the team to score and win. The lack of shots was concerning and its clear that there are some big holes that need filling... Hey, the trade deadline is not far away.
I agree. I think we are a better team without Barzy and especially Dobson. Gil, would love to hear your thoughts on this, more in depth... Why does it seem/feel, that when Barzy is out of the lineup, the islanders seem turn the puck over less, and the team seems to play more of a structured game. Regarding Dobson, it's obvious they are a better team without him.
Dobson soft. Send em both to Vancouver for Petterson. Horvat and Petterson were linemates. Good chemistry. Move Nelson and Palmieri for picks. Prospects. They could re sign. Over summer.
Sorokin a wall. But he’s going to need a rest. How long until Hogberg back?
Barzal is not an elite player. He's a good player, but he cannot be a team's top player because he's a setup guy, not a scorer. When he's on his game, he creates time and space for teammates. When he's not, he skates around a lot and turns the puck over. They cannot have all roads run through Barzal. Let's see what happens at the trade deadline. The next month or so will not be dull and will be critical to the future of the franchise. Thanks for the comment and LGI.
I agree with Dobson. His shortcomings are a big problem in the defensive zone. With Barzal, he can help the team under the right circumstances, but he can often hinder the team. You need players who possess patience and who can score to play with Barzal. And he needs to be smarter and more disciplined with the puck. Thanks for the comment, linodisalvo. LGI.
Isles hockey is fun again
5 little words that say so much and are definitely true. Thanks for the comment, Craig. LGI
how could we root for this team to lose and trade players...see how happy they all are ...and the building goes nuts...guys try so hard for each other. no dobber. no Barzie and yet we beating contenders....
It's been great to see them winning and playing well. They're even entertaining lately. I don't think fans want them to lose. They just believe this core has maxed out and because of their age, they need a retool. The Isles roster hasn't won a playoff series in 4 years and even if they play well the rest of the season and make the playoffs as a wild card team, they would need to pull off four major upsets to win a Cup. Many fans feel if they retool like Washington did this offseason, they could go from a fringe playoff team to a true Cup contender if it's done right. Thanks for the comment, foleydvm. LGI.
Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? The Islanders earned a hard fought win over VGS 2-1. Ilya Sorokin's still playing solid 🏒 in goal making 30 saves . They got off to ugly start, but they recovered. Bo Horvat scored a beautiful goal. Brock Nelson scored the GW goal, and they TCB. As I said yesterday, the Islanders have always played well against the Golden Knights. Hero, Ilya Sorokin for playing a strong game. 🐐, COMMUNITY EFFORT FOR UGLY 1ST PERIOD. The Islanders have given up 2 goals or less, which means that Patrick Roy told them IT'S ⏲️ TO STEP UP DEFENSIVELY. Also, acquiring Tony D'Angelo and Scott Perunovich helped a great deal. They both play smart 🏒, and so is Bogqvist. Bridgeport had an ugly week. HAPPY 🎂, JOE SACCO. A defensive forward. He scored the GW goal in a win against the Los Angeles 🤴. Hear from you later, Gil, but before I go I finished 👀 Game 4 of 80 Finals, and I 👀 a clip from a game against the Capitals in 1982, where big brother Duane Sutter set up little brother, Brent on all 3 goals in a win back when the Capitals couldn't get a win. Now, LET'S GO ISLANDERS.
Ah, the Sutter brothers. Nice memories. The Isles are playing well and I am surprised they shut down Vegas so well, and yes, Sorokin was outstanding. The new defensemen are really helping. Thanks for the comment, Cindy. LGI.
Great analysis, especially pointing out the crucial difference as not giving up leads compared to recent history. The other intriguing point is what I gather from your take on the impact of some of the injuries. Would you go as far as saying the Islanders are winning not in spite of the injuries, perhaps BECAUSE OF THEM? 😅
I think the injury replacements improved the team in some ways. The improved mobility of the defensemen has helped for sure. Thanks for the comment, LionZebra. LGI
Dobson isn’t missed. Move him. He will bring a good return. Nelson will also bring back picks and prospects. Move some vets now while their value is high. As the injuries have shown they won’t collapse if a few pieces are moved.
I would look to move Dobson as well but I want a healthy return if I trade him. Agree on moving vets. Lee's value will never be higher. Can't lose Brock and Palms for nothing. Thanks for the comments, MichaelSr-sp5pw. LGI.
As discussed, trade Dobson and Mayfield and keep the current defense which is actually winning the games.
Will Lou do that? Probably not. Should he? Different questions. Thanks for the comment, mrjghoward. LGI.
Face it! The D core has become more mobile! They are engaging and joining the rush. The core is faster and playing more determined. Tony and Romy has better chemistry than Dobson n Romy. There is no panic in Tony’s game. Really praying Lou sees what most see! Dobson should be traded at the trade deadline. You would think Dobson could be ready to play by March 7. I am signing all of the new D players Lou stole! Gatcomb is showing he can play at this level!
Not sure if Dobson will be healthy by the deadline but if he is, I'd trade him for the right package but it would have to be a nice package in return. Thanks for the comment, ottobee709. LGI.
Its a W. 8 in 9 now. 30 the difference better than samsanov again as isles sweep up vgk. Isles only get 14 shots yet score 2 g's. And isles don't gain ground still 3 pts. out of w c and 4 behind wings who won. A kind of why w game as louzer now fiddles his thumbs not wanting to sell off and will probably just stay put and not do a fkn thing with a nice two week break coming up to contemplate things. I don't think louzer is capable of keeping up with tdl or can grasp it so i don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing to stay put which is a bad thing or sell off which needs to be done. Louzer is probably willing to chance it that he re-signs ufa's in this mad dash just to scrape out 8th spot-again. Unless 29 does force his hand to deal him. And mild don't have a first this draft and mid level not top prospects to deal which would be a must in any 29 deal. So louzer may have to look elsewhere if he deals 29. Jets even la out west possibilities. Probably a bad time for this win run with 2 week break for louzer to over-evaluate this squad thinking its still a playoff caliber contender that could go cold once things start up again.
And for fks sake i hated to hear ahl b'port report. Very depressing. Collection of mediocre talent just justifies why isles need to sell-off for prospects/picks. Got eiserman, need a top c you only get at top of draft, top d man too, top g prospect, guy with size that can score. So many needs.
I was saying with Ottawa contending and Long Islands pinto (who grew up a die hard fan) not wanting to commit long term to Ottawa maybe a Nelson for pinto trade can work as pinto is a cheap cap hit for next season and maybe takes a hometown discount to play long term with his childhood team, he’d be a perfect replacement for Nelson, big, fast and young
So exciting to see what they have done over the past couple of weeks. But I agree….. push towards making the team next year.
@@kpowers9215Nelson has at least a partial no trade. No way he goes to Ottawa. Maybe as a short term rental. But Ottawa will want more than that for Pinto.
Bridgeport is a mediocre Coast team. The cupboard is bare. Lou lucked out grabbing DeAngelo.
Bridgeport is a mess. Lou said last week, winning isn't his priority at B'port. How does that make fans who pay to see that team feel? As for the trades, Lou will probably try to re-sign Nelson and Palms and make this team stuck in the muddy middle for even longer. I hope he gets wise and retools a bit but again, I'll believe it when I see it. Thanks for the comment, Steven. LGI
