I once painted a child’s toy chest with a mother and baby elephant. I cannot tell you how many images I collected up preparing for this project. An elephant’s eye is a world in itself. I did the same thing with hot air balloons. Just the exercise of looking at so many images made me appreciate the intricacies and the ultimately I learned so much about the subject matter. Both projects turned out well and I hang on to what I collected. I just like having the pictures. They now hold memories of my work.
You have expertly described every design concept ever. This process works for designing fabric patterns, knitting project, building projects, painting projects. It was important to point out that knowing the specifics of your technique (in this case, gold work) contribute greatly to the end product.
Mmmm! my wren design has flown out of the window (well, maybe not) But I can't wait to see the next stage of the elephant (he's just lovely and the wren may get abandoned). I have started the little bird with a gold kid wing and some bright check for the branches he's sitting on but... perhaps I need to simplify the design? Who knows? - well, Sarah does for a start! I find that placing the eye is really hard - maybe Caroline could help here? Altogether a really great video Sarah, thank you.
Oh yes please! Keep em coming, Sarah! Enjoy picking your brain. 😀 I’m trying to start a beautiful landscape design from a favorite painting. Not exactly the same picture, but the general layered look of a lake in the fall with storm clouds in the sky being mirrored in the lake. How do you decide which stitches and types of threads …shiny, matte, puffy, etc
Sarah - absolutely excellent... so ‘busy’ with unplanned stuff these days ... thank you for reminding me of my goals at the beginning of the year ... before it became such an ‘interesting’ year .... please do make more vlogs on this topic. I really enjoyed it ... stay well..
AWESOME !!! I haven't got around to watching your gold work videos yet but this was fun to watch and I've downloaded the elephant already so I'm glad I watched this first and I know where it came from ;) Thanks for sharing ;D
Hi Sarah What can I say? This video could have not come at a better time for me! I am about to start drafting my own crewel embroidery design and this has helped me so much. It was very interesting to learn about how you go about a design and also how it may be modified as you go along. I have been looking at the shading process and the colours I would like to use along with leaf shapes and flowers I want to use and plan this as my starting point. I am thinking about the Tree of Life design (ambitious as always!). It was good to hear you discuss about planning ahead and how to frame an item etc. I shall look forward to seeing the finished elephant. Best wishes and thanks for this helpful information
Thanks for showing all the stages of design. I did have one quick question...what was the fabric you painted for the elephant? I didn't recognize the name when you said it in the video. (Love the elephant btw!)
It's Pelmet Vilene Stephanie! It's not your usual embroidery fabric but I've discovered it's great for painting and stitching on. You can see what it is here: www.sarahhomfray.com/myshop/prod_6958603-Square-of-Vilene-10cm-x-10cm.html
Hooray Hooray....a video without any background white noise or Moozak...so easy to watch!

I could watch and listen to you all day long :) I feel as if I'm in the room with you. I have purchased a notebook just for embroidery notes,
We have well over 200 videos Michele so you probably could watch all day and not see the same thing twice! Glad you are enjoying...

I used to be an engineer S, and it worked in that environment too!
Such great advice about gettig it done and not getting hung up with perfectionism.

I have been trying to make spikes on a porcupine. So, I have been trying to learn the turkey stitch to no avail! Could you please demo it?
We have a video on Tureky Rug Stitch Karen, check out the Stitch Library
Really enjoyed this vlog...but it has proved to me that designing is not for me..my talent reaches its peak drawing stick figures.
It's many years of practice and learning Helen, my first piece was not like this!
