    So when did it rain 4 feet of dirt to cover everything up.

      Time did that. Only took 1300 years. The rocky mountains are in a constant state of erosion. So when the big mountains turn into smaller mountains. The dirt has to go somewhere.

      Sunset Crater first erupted in 1064 (if memory serves me properly) It errupted off and on for a while and some areas were covered by volcanic ash. Perhaps some of this "soil" is volcanic ash.
