  • From chapel to garden. The small public square just a short walk from the centre of historic Xàbia has a history stretching back over 450 years. Initially the site of a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto, the building was demolished in 1881 when one of the church's vaults collapsed causing the death of a resident. In the early 1920s, the area was cleared and turned into the town's first public garden. Master stonemason Vicent de Gràcia built the fountain in 1923 and some 30 years later he designed and built the monument that stands in the centre of the square. In 2020, the area was restored, removing symbolism of the Franco regime, and the square was renamed in his honour.
