Ivan Mendez was Angelina's (12y) guitarist in LA in 2018. In an interview with Alan Papier on his RUclips channel, Ivan told the story of how the cover came about. In a nutshell ( I mean in summary, I can't give an interview of almost 40 minutes in two sentences, please listen to Ivan Mendez yourself. ) "Angelina doesn't have a wish list of songs, she decides spontaneously if she likes a song. After hearing this song she says great song and has downloaded the lyrics. Then Ivan played the melody and Angelina says" good but slower, slower , even slower. OK, well, let's start ". Then the cover was recorded in one take, Angelina sang the song here for the first time after her arrangement without rehearsing beforehand.👣 💯 *AJ* 💯👣
Lucie, this is 12 yo Angelina & guitarist Ivan Mendez creating this impromptu, unrehearsed, one take masterpiece performance. She is making up the arrangement as she goes & Ivan is just following whatever she does. He's hearing this for the 1st time & has said the hardest thing about playing for Angelina is maintaining his concentration as he just gets lost in her singing. The co-writer of the song, Michelle Phillips, who is the last surviving member of the Mommas & Pappas, was totally blown away by this performance. She tagged it on their official website, which is total respect from the creator of the song.

Anytime she’s singing with Ivan Mendez, she’s only 12. What’s amazing is that from 6 on, at least with the videos that her team has uploaded, she had that part of her voice that had that rasp and deepness, to her incredible 10's, where her voice was as good as any other professional artist, and even to the point where she was able to really control the deepness from the age of 11 to 12, and then fully on from 13 on.❤

This has always been a favorite song of mine. The unique sound of the 1960’s Mamas and the Papas was immediately recognizable. Here, Angelina does what she does better than any singer I’ve ever heard. She re-imagines the song, and the lyrics hit us completely differently than the original. And it’s done with a beautiful voice, respecting the original, but making it completely Angelina. I could listen to this everyday.

It's been 5 years since I first heard this and Angelina's incredible arrangement, tone and timing, and the picture she paints with the lyrics has just brought me chills once again. There's very, very few singers of any age have the ability to do this.
Twelve here I believe Lucie. The rule of thumb is if you see Ivan, Angelina is twelve. Amazing! A relaxed carpet ride into Angelina's world. She "feels" everything she covers in such a unique way, a true prodigy. I recommend at least a daily dose of her voice for good health, an elixir for the soul! Have a great day Lucie!

Wonderful reaction, Lucie. No many 12 year old girls can take a classic song from over 55 years ago, which was a light ballad, to turn it into a slow one and melancholy song that fills you with emotions. The musical intelligence with which she reworks the old songs (and not just those), is simply amazing and her ability to exploit only the accompaniment of the simple guitar sound is incredible, I really believe that only this little girl with Donald Ducks on her shirt can do it so easily and harmoniously. The simplicity and ease with which she deals with songs of this type, without preparing them and often recorded on the first or second run (as reported by her guitarists), is simply amazing even more for a 12/13 year old girl, not to mention her vocal range. I love her stripped versions of the classics songs she chooses.💛🧡❤
Some of her words remind me of flower petals slowly drifting in air. Another original cover that she makes hers. And it's not like her version replaces Mama Cass'. It's a new song done this way.

Thank you Lucie.. "California Dreamin' " was written by John & Michelle Phillips in 1963 while living in New York City. The Mammas and
Papas recorded it inLos Angeles after their move to Laurel Canyon (Hollywood) in 1964. Angelina recorded this in her LA home in 2018
the year that her family moved to LA from Oslo. Angelina's "arrangement" is more a spontaneous agreement between Angelina and Ivan
Mendez (guitarist). They often sat discussing songs that Angelina liked, then played them as sometimes Ivan had never heard them.
After their run through, they most often recorded the song in 1 take. Unfortunately they only played together for half of 2018. In this (2021)
