I chose Health and Safety as my first career; went on complete a full time coarse and completed my National Diploma in Safety Management. I did not get a job in Health and Safety straight away and had to take up a job as a Sales Person at a Life Insurance company for one year - luckily I was offered a job at a mine and during my time there completed my degree in Safety Management as well as a qualification in Mining, so I am a qualified miner as well. From there I was offered a position at a Pharmaceutical company in an Environmental Health and Safety role where I am still workin today. My next steps will be to get qualified in Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Management.
I chose health and safety during college because the program description talked it up real good - varied work day, high pay, job security, and education
This post is absolutely perfect! Everything..all parts of this rings true for me even only being saftey coordinator now under 2 yr. Well presented information!
I've been considering health & safety as a second career and really struggling to find advice and opinions that aren't sales tactics. This video is exactly what I was looking for - and your words are very encouraging. Thank you!
I’m a PhD student in medical humanities researching labor laws and folklore. Just digging through archives of documented and undocumented workers/construction projects, assessing injury/illness, and and how they ended up in stories like John Henry. And now I’m really interested in more active forms of health and safety. Like I enjoy it far more than my PhD and now I have no idea where to start. I’m really good at tests. Sometimes. I’ve got a B.A in English and education, an associates in psychology, and a master’s in English. I really enjoy the data and writing part of safety and health, designing workshops, and the freaking table of contents section of the manuals no one reads. I’m going to throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and hope something sticks. Thanks for this video!
Thanks for the video. I have been in health and safety in education field. It is challenging as you said. However it's a great job when management is very supportive.
I've been out of work since the pandemic due to ill health. However this has given me an idea, it's difficult to know what to do but I was a safety rep at a factory and driving instructor too. Merry Christmas and a happy new year all.
Sorry to hear you've not been well, Rob. Glad this has sparked some interest in potentially entering the safety industry, it really is such an interesting space to be in. Lots of problems to solve, and we need fresh eyes like yours to help us improve how we do things. Good luck, and Happy New Year!
4th option. The H&S at the plant I work at is ignored or dismissed so badly and I am vilified so much for trying to push H&S that now I am looking at turning it into a career.
That's frustrating buddy! One if the members of Project Mollitiam has the exact same issues and he has decided to join the profession as well! Best of luck!
Great Video! I started in health and safety at 16 straight from school into an apprenticeship, now I'm on my second year and 2nd company and recently completed my NEBOHS L3 - really enjoying it - Currently looking into the NCRQ L6 so binge watching your videos!
I enjoyed the NCRQ L6, I still think that HS qualifications have a long way to go to actually match our challenging roles however I felt the NCRQ was a step in the right direction! Glad you are enjoying the content, I hope they help and good luck in your studies!
Very insightful. I've come from a musical / Sound Engineering background and like yourself have fallen into warehouse work and logistics and generally enjoy it. I have stumbled upon H&S and I am very interested in it. Thank you very much!
I was a correctional officer for 10 years and it's time for a career change. I believe this would be a good fit. I learned how to communicate with all types of personalities throughout my career. I joined corrections because I wanted to help rehabilitate offenders and make the community a safer place! Occupational Health and Safety looks like a professional career that would give me a sense of purpose. I'm 32 years of age better get started haha.
Been racking my brain all month deciding if to do NEBOSH or not, as I'm in the construction industry also if to do the general one or construction one, and if I would like the job role or not but this vid has cleared up alot of things for me so il be booking my course next month
Currently doing Nebosh, hopefully onto the diploma next, similar to you wanted to be a police officer, had several civil service jobs have to say the careers/hr person I spoke to at the HSE was awesome and told me exactly what I needed to get to work for them.
This is fantastic, the longest video I’ve watched. I would absolutely love to get into the career of Health & safety. I am a female, is it a well chosen career for both sex? I do suffer with some learning disabilities, it doesn’t stop me learning but I can sometimes put barriers in. Incredibly relatable video. I’m also in a factory, and I don’t like it I want out. And this is what I want to do. So thank you!!
Hi Sophie, Firstly thanks for watching, we are working hard to get our videos down to under ten minutes but somtimes its really hard, especially because I like to talk 🤣 so thanks for sticking with it. To your question on gender, diversity in this profession is no where near where it needs to be, I am actually building a series of episodes for the podcast focusing on it now so watch this space. I will add that I know some amazing ladies doing some amazing work in this space and there are now several woman in safety groups so it is growing. My mentor and my coach are both very successful women in safety and Human Factors and they are fricking awesome! With regard to learning difficulties, I have never been diagnosed with anything but numbers just don't work in my head, I am 30 and I dont know my 3 times table and I have managed to be successful I this career (I think lol) my advice would be always work on yourself. Be honest about your so called weaknesses and where possible work on them, but don't let that stop, you focus on your strengths because you will have them! I genuinely think safety is a great career choice for anyone!!
What a fabulous reply!! Thank you so much for that, and knowing you’re equally bad at maths makes me happy. 😂 I can’t wait to do my courses. Thanks again, looking forward to more videos !!
Thank you James, your videos really broaden my understanding and helps me to understand the things i need to focus on, however, I'm about going into health and safety to grow my soft skill set, i already passed my NEBOSH General and the construction one, but, i have been working in food manufacturing company and i need to grow experience in health and safety going forward, though, i have recently approached the health and safety advisor for help in this area, by allowing me to become his shadow assistant to give me the necessary knowledge on how things are done. waiting for response at this point.
A fantastic analysis of health and safety. I'm trying to get into health & safety career. My background is banking and a degree in Finance. Love your video. Any more tips?
More tips! Lol we have done loads on the channel but looking at your background I would say look to you transferable skills. You already do Risk assessments but in a different manner, top tip... it's the same.
Lol, like you were saying I worked in quality most of my career then I was given, safety, environmental and security. Now 30 years down the road I am still going. Done my NCRQ Diploma just need to joint IOSH or IIRSM now, lol. Great vid, keep it going.
Brilliant video- i have just completed my Nebosh general - having decided on a career change at 37 years of age - i have been advised to consider an auditing / lead auditor course next with the Nebosh environmental - some really good nuggets of information in there top stuff 🙂
Hello, I study geology and mining in my first degree and did geoscience masters in my second degree, but working as a health and safety personnel with over five years experience, will going for a masters in health and safety be a good take?. I have nebosh, and diploma in occupational health and safety from school of health here in my country, and other locally recognised certificate within my country. Please advice will a masters be a good take?
Thanks so much for this. I am looking for a career change from support work. I am doing a psychology degree at and have worked part time as a life coach for 8 years. Really keen to still help other through a rile but also use the soft skills and I fkuencibg ability I have. You covered so many useful points in this video. Subscribed!
that was really helpful! I just recently decided that I wanted to start a career in health and safety, and believe me, this is exactly what I needed to watch. my only concern is that I'm afraid that I decided my decision a bit too late given I'm 28 yo but still, thank you very much for this video.
@@geminim6718 because 95% of health and safety professionals get into the profession straight from school directly to apprenticeships if you are 45 and trying to get into the profession believe me you will have a hard time getting a chance because organisations will expect you to have 10 15 years experience regardless if you are qualified…
I just recently left the nursing profession after 3 years, I have a degree in Adult Nursing and want a complete career change. I'm looking into HSE and doing a Masters in Safety, Health and Environmental Management. I'm hoping because I dont have NEBOSH or any real HSE qualifications, the course I would be doing is IOSH accreddited and will jump start my career into the sector. Thanks for the video anyway useful for my research!
It's a good and wholesome career, can be challenging without good employers and there is a lot wrong with our profession but the more people join the profession with fresh eyes the better to help us evolve and grow!!
Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. I have a safety and health assistant manager interview later this month for Orange County California. I am excited but a little nervous. I want to ace the interview
Hey good luck!! Be yourself. Remeber that an interview isn't just about you being asked questions its your opportunity to find out if the business is right for you as well!
Thankyou for a great video. I work for a large energy supplier and I’ve always been interested in health and safety so have finally decided to follow that route. I’m lucky that our SHE manager has offered to mentor me to help get to my end goal of my 5 year plan. Unfortunately it looks like I will have to pay for all of the courses myself and try and juggle it aside my day job. But I feel it will be worth it in the long run and can’t wait to get my first role in HS. This is my first video I have watch and found it very useful and love the basic step by step guide. Thanks again
Hey Lee, I am not sure where you are based but in the UK at least you can get a SHE apprenticeship that is pretty much completely funded, could be somthing to pitch to your employer?
We offer consultancy so we are for it in a sense lol. There are a lot of poor quality consultants out there like there is for many Professions. Outsourcing is also normally a much better solution for smaller and medium size businesses.
You are probably going to have to focus on getting an entry level qualification for whatever country you want to work in. Then building some experience by volunteering or being a safety rep etc.
Just finished a diploma in Human Resources out of highschool, and the courses I did in OHS really interested me. I want to pursue a designation to land me a job in H&S. Thanks for video lad.
@@RebrandingSafety Good to hear. I start my Nebosh next week so looking forward ti studying it and seeing if Health and Saftey is for me. What's your best tips for someone looking to get their first job in the industry with no experience? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
hey i'm an 19 year old trying to figure out what I want to do as I am deciding what to get into and Occupational Health and Safety caught my eye. If you have the time please reply to this so i could maybe ask a few questions. Thank you so much!
Hi there, Great video. I am starting a health and safety advisor job in the next few weeks, I’m early on in my career, so my legal knowledge is still novice level. What advice would you give to someone like me to make the opportunity successful?
Congrats on the new role!! 👏 Top tips....argh that's huge question! To be honest my top tip would be yes learn the core legislation it will help but when uou get started my top tip would be spend as much time as you can learning how work is done in the real world. The more you knkw about the real world of work The better you can apply the legislation in a resonable and practical way.
Do you recommend getting your masters in health and safety? I have my bachelors degree but it’s not in health and safety or anything related. I also work in the oilfields, oil & gas industry.
Lovely video. I am 26 and a civil engineer. I am considering diverting into health, safety and environment. 1. Ain't I late in thinking of changing career path? 2. I want to start by taking nebosh certificate course. Will that be a good option? Thanks.
Depends what you mean by level 3 but most approved fire risk assessment schemes not will require the entry level qualification with experience under a mentor.
@@RebrandingSafety I mean a level 3 certificate in fire risk assessment. Because I have been looking for a job in fire safety due to because I’m a new entry they can’t give me the job. It’s so frustrating, so what do you advise me to do? Thank you.
I've been working in the construction industry for 12 years as an electrician, thinking about doing my NEBOSH general cert and construction cert to help me on the path into health and safety and off the tools. My only worry is finding a job after, kinda hoping the construction back ground would be a help...... Thanks for the info buddy.
I think a construction back ground will really help. Have a look into some apprenticeships, you can get a lot more bang for your buck, my try discussing with your existing employer about funding it?
I'm currently in mechanical maintenance and a Safety Advisor position has come up internally at my work. Ultimately I want to get off the tools one day and H&S to me is a natural progression (other than supervisor or something but I really fancy a change). Unfortunately I don't have NEBOSH general yet but hoping there can be some leeway due to me being an internal candidate. Found this video very helpful!
Well, As for me, I've got the diploma in Environmental science (Ecologist). Yes, I did think that I would save the nature. Then safety got me after I got hired. Looking forward to applying for the HSE professional Master's degree. But don't have money to study in the UK or USA where these programs are being taught at Universities.
Its a such a shame but money does seem to a barrier to learning and join this profession! Environmental science is just as exciting space I think though?
I want to thank you for this video I found it very informative. I am looking at getting in to health and safety but I'm no spring chicken have you any information where I can start please Thanks Paul
Its hard for my to comment without knowing the in's and Out's but I will try my best. If you can build up experience within your current role thats win win, try to see if you can volunteer to be the safety rep for example or get invovled in project etc. You will need to get entry level qualification like and NCRQ or NEBOSH, unfortunately this are regularly deemed more important than experience by most so you will need somthing. Try to build experiance outside of work, eg the safety rep for your rugby, football, golf etc club. There are SHE apprenticeships you can get in the UK now they have funding as well so you could ask your employer to fund that because its likely they will have to pay very little. Finally I would start to engage with as many safety professionals and manages on linked as you can, build relationships with them. Oh and connect with specialist recruiters like Principal people, Acre and HSE recruitment for example
Hi there stumbling on this video I have a degree in IT n not worked for a few years but wanna get back into things this job is appealing to me as I don't really want a it job anymore. Trying figure out how to go about it
It's a challenge to change careers at any age so best of luck!! NEBOSH is the entry level popular qualification that would be a good place to start if you can afford to self fund.
I'm currently working as EHS Specialist in Philip Morris International (Pakistan plant) and have around 5 years of experience. I'm currently confuse about either going for nebosh idip or csp. Kindly guide me in this regard.
Hi great video! i am currently working in occupational health for a large company within a naval base/dockyard and i am interested in moving to a career in health and safety. I have a sports science degree, what is my best next move? A NEBOSH diploma or similar? many thanks
For sure a NEBOSH is the entry level qualification, I would advise though trying to get some experience. Try volunteering to be the safety rep maybe and/or talking to your existing safety profession for some mentoring.
I love this so much I wish I had the money to do it. I’m going to try my best to do this course this year. I’m breaking the cycle of no graduates in our family 😂♥️
Thanks for video but i am still confused. I have aan architecture diploma from my country which is nvq6. I had my cscs card (white). I had my smsts course. do i have to take a Nebosh health and safety for construction course for being a health and safety advisor ?
Masters in Public safety in environmental and occupational safety. Is this course related to health and safety? By the ways it from University of Alberta, Canada
Hello James, im looking into a career into health and safety, I’m currently serving in the navy and soon I’ll be entitled to enhanced learning credits and the Nebosh level 3 course is available to me through that. I’m looking to get into course as soon as I can as I’m looking for a new career change. Starting at 27, on a different career change would I find the transfer difficult? Also do many jobs out there expect experience before applying?
Hi Ryan! Best of luck with the transfer to the civie world!! The NEBOSH Gen or other level 3 are good entry level qualifications to have for sure. Regarding experience some employers may ask for that but try to leverage your experiance from the navy, safety is an aspect of normal work after all so we all have safety experience!
What is your advice on doing MSc in occupational health and safety ? For an international student how is the scope or probability of getting into a job in UK ?
I can only speak from my experience I would hold a MSc quite high in my estimations however its needs to be supported by experience for any role role about any advisor to be honest, just my opinion. But a great qualification that will support you for a long time.
thank you for your motivation, i really love to become a health and safety and your video support my choice more and more, i would like to ask you something if you could help me as i'm UK resident i chose the National GC let say in the future wanna move to UAE and would like to carry on my Health and Safety career there should i do the International or the National certificate one will be enough ? thank you indeed
I dont really have experience of the international one but I would guess that if you want to work or may work internationally then the international one makes sense. Thanks for feeding back and best of luck in your new career!
No way buddy. Whilst I do moan a lot in the podcast that we need more "youth" in the profession, and I stand by that, we do. What we actually need is more diversity, so if will only have youth in the profession we would have the same issues we have now but the other way round. So in summary, hell no its not late, hopefully all your previous work experiance will help you.
Thanks for the great video! I'm now going through the Nebosh level 3 general certificate in occupational H+S and this was great inside information about the job 😊
I am planning to get a NEBOSH General certificate for a career change . Could you please advise me? Is it a good choice for career ? What is your opinion. How do you feel ? Please help me
Im a civil grad from India. Im now going for nebosh IGC and wish to work abroad. What are the chances of getting a job abroad (UK particularly) in health and safety. Btw this video has been very helpful for me and gave me an extra push for pursuing a career in health and safety. Thank you !
Hey! I am glad the video has motivated and helped you! What are your chances of getting a job I the UK. I have no idea to be honest, I would advise talking to the specialist recruiters like Principal people or HSE recruitment network, or Shirley Parsons
hi, I'm an undergrad and have done my NEBOSH and also Diploma in Environmental Sciences. I have 5 years experience in construction field. I want to pursue my career as a Health & Safety Officer in UK/Ireland. what are the chances of getting a job in the respective field!! It would be of a great help if you please guide me regarding the subject. thanks and regards from India.
I am not the best person to help with that question but I would if I was you I would contact Health and Safety specialist recruiters in the UK such as Principal People or HSE recruitment network, or Shirley parsons.
Hard to be specific but some broad points. Just start by building knowledge and experiance, register for as many free webinars, events, mailing lists etc. Listen to podcast, videos etc absorb as much information as possible. Try if possible to get experience by volunteering as the safety rep at work. When when ready start considering the the formal entry level qualifications like NEBOSN or NVQ or NCRQ ( they may vary around the world)
Nice one MrSonny! Thank you for the tip! There are so many good ways to get into the profession. I saw a course at the London Collage the other day that I would be interested in. Risk, resilience and diaster management! That sounds like a epic course!
@@RebrandingSafety Love it! Yeah that'd be a good course to have a look at, particularly if you're looking to focus your attention towards incident management and with 9 years in the role, you'd have an edge in the transferable skills department 😉
@@RebrandingSafety I've not had experience in Social Science at an academic level but, I would say that (layman's terms) the idea you could use an understanding of human behaviour to determine possible outcomes would be extremely useful. Do you already have a Bsc Hons degree?
Iam a fresh graduate in fire and safety and currently working as a trainee. Could you suggest should I go for higher studies like ms in the same field or to work and gain some experience before masters.
Iam about to start a occupational health and safety cert 4 , I actually have a beauty background i want to know as a younger female (30) and having the career background i do , how can I get them to take me serious when applying for jobs and in the industry?
Yeah I think experience should be considered as international by any good employers. A level 3 qualification in safety is the minimum entry level qualification for safety. Level 7 is the diploma level qualification is needed to develop beyond entry level.
Would like to get involved in a career like this but at 31 and leaving school with zero qualifications is it even possible, I don’t want to be stuck in my current dead end job forever 🙆🏻♂️
I think so Ross yeah. I am 30, granted I started in safety about 9 years ago but I had no education behind me or anything. The issue you may have may be getting a entre level job that matches the income you need but there are options out there like SHE apprenticeships that are funded by the goverment. Or try to self fund NEBOSH or NCRQ and that may help get a better paid entry level job.
My brother is an HSE engineer graduate and currently working in a multinational construction company as a assistant hse engineer. He have taken Nebosh IGC. Is there a need of taking Nebosh diploma?
That's a hard question, I personally think that the NEBOSH diploma and equivalents are out dated but you will struggle to get interviews without them. So yeah for the time being it is worth having.
I have been working with hotel and corporate industry as security officer which included safety positions too. I am now appearing for my final year of graduation. Will I be eligible for Occupational health and safety course? If I opt in the uk university, I certainly need to be in uk to complete the course.. can immigrants get help in arranging residence for themselves? Thank u
Hi Ninad, To be honest I have no idea about residency and support in that regard. However I think your background will help you in a career in safety definitely.
Ahh I wish I'd enrolled on the NCRQ now instead of the NEBOSH after watching this. I store information very well and can write it down or explain it to others but one of the NEBOSH exams I keep failing due to the exam structure and command words. Probably over answering every thing. The assignments would have made much more sense.
To be honest for a long long time a lot of people had no other option so many of us can relate to your challange!! I am currently doing my Environment NEBOSH diploma and I am dreading the exam!! Best of luck!!!
Thanks for the valuable content, i'm new to this channel. I would like to know if NEBOSCH certification can allow me work in USA or CANADA or it's mandatory pass USA or CANADA local safety certifications to be knowledgeable ?
Hmmm I don't have much experience in the USA or Canada but NEBOSH does have their international qualifications. Not sure if that cover USA or Canada ether though.
In part yes there are homeworking parts. A lot of the admin could be done at home easy. So you could be home based but to be effective you need to be in the field with the workers on the shop floor.
@@RebrandingSafety thank you for your insight. Very much interested in this field but I am only able to do home based with occasional visits 😭. Can I still pursue this field?
Hello! I have a bachelor's degree in economics from Bulgaria. I want to get a degree from NEBOSH. Do you think that if I have a nebosh diploma (international occupational health and safety) I will have a chance of getting a job in the UK? Without a higher technical education from a university and only a NEBOSH diploma and also the fact that I am a foreigner from Bulgaria, will I have a chance? and what is the chance? I have no pracitical experience
Sir I'm thinking about starting my career in OHS but I'm a graduate fresher, and I have no experience, I am planning to take my post graduate course in Health and safety in Canada, and currently studying for Nebosh igc, is it possible for freshers to get into this field with no previous experience or certificates? I'll eventually work my way up to the Canadian OHS certificates ones I have a starting job, but just wanted to know if getting a job in OHS without prior experience, for a fresher possible?
Of course anything is possible and to start any career everyone has no experience at one point in their career. In the UK we are starting to see post grad apprenticeships pop up which is is hopeful. I would advise that if you can whilst studying try to get some volunteer work doing safety, or even a safety steward at sports games and events (granted that won't happen during COVID) but if you could do that you would be able to build experiance. Other than that I would advise you start approaching some employees you would like to work with now and start to engage and build a relationship with them, which linkedin has made possible.
I dont think there is a bias towards any gender to be honest. The field office split depends on your employer to be honest but it should be more field in my opinion.
I think it depends what you want from it. If you want to go to uni but want to work in safety my personal advice would be do a specialist degree that would complement HS like engineering or Physcolgy, sociology, then do your degree level diploma via NEBOSH etc when you finish, thats how I wish I had done it.
Do you have to have a 4 years degree to get job and Health and safety , what if you have the NEBOSH certificate but no bachelor degree , you steel can get a job ?
Its depends on the level of the job to be honest and the employer. The experiance and knowledge for me is the most important but employers at the moment place a very high value on the qualifications. For example it would be difficult to get a manager or above level job without a level 6 qualification.
I can only talk talk the UK but I would talk to the specialist recruiters like HSE recruitment network. Shirley Parsons, Principal People ACRE otherwise google and apply mate.
i have nebosh international diploma with distinction and 12 years of Health and safety manager experience. approved by mot macdonalds, parsons and major consultants. each project more than 1billion UAE. SO megaprojects with average manpower of 2 to 3 thousand at peak.

I do suffer with some learning disabilities, it doesn’t stop me learning but I can sometimes put barriers in. Incredibly relatable video. I’m also in a factory, and I don’t like it I want out. And this is what I want to do. So thank you!!
Hi Sophie,
Firstly thanks for watching, we are working hard to get our videos down to under ten minutes but somtimes its really hard, especially because I like to talk 🤣 so thanks for sticking with it.
I’m in college doing degree. The girls/female students in this major are more than males. I was surprised when I first walked in!
Awesome stuff buddy!! Best of luck. Hope you get a response!
Ha that's not to dissimilar from my route in! Looks like a very common route into the profession.
Brilliant video- i have just completed my Nebosh general - having decided on a career change at 37 years of age - i have been advised to consider an auditing / lead auditor course next with the Nebosh environmental - some really good nuggets of information in there top stuff 🙂
Thanks for the amazing feedback! Best of luck in the career change!

I mean it won't hurt. Maybe safety in quarrying and geotechincal risks would be a great combination of the two!
Thanks so much for this. I am looking for a career change from support work. I am doing a psychology degree at and have worked part time as a life coach for 8 years. Really keen to still help other through a rile but also use the soft skills and I fkuencibg ability I have. You covered so many useful points in this video. Subscribed!
Hey Jennifer!
I am glad you found the video helpful! Thanks for subscribing as well!!
that was really helpful! I just recently decided that I wanted to start a career in health and safety, and believe me, this is exactly what I needed to watch. my only concern is that I'm afraid that I decided my decision a bit too late given I'm 28 yo but still, thank you very much for this video.
No such think as too late!
Glad you liked the video and that it helped you! Good luck in your career!!

how can you think 28 is too old? your young
@@geminim6718 because 95% of health and safety professionals get into the profession straight from school directly to apprenticeships if you are 45 and trying to get into the profession believe me you will have a hard time getting a chance because organisations will expect you to have 10 15 years experience regardless if you are qualified…

I'm hoping because I dont have NEBOSH or any real HSE qualifications, the course I would be doing is IOSH accreddited and will jump start my career into the sector. Thanks for the video anyway useful for my research!

I am a horticulture major and been thinking long term thinking of getting in to the health and safety side of the industry. 🤔
It's a good and wholesome career, can be challenging without good employers and there is a lot wrong with our profession but the more people join the profession with fresh eyes the better to help us evolve and grow!!
Just got a BS in biology and was thinking about going into this field as opposed to grad school or medical school
It's a challenging career like many but I enjoy it! Biology degree would defo help in the health side for sure!
I have done MBBS . I am a general practitioner. I want to go into occupational health and safety. Is it a wrong desicion
Hey mate did it go well?
Thankyou for a great video. I work for a large energy supplier and I’ve always been interested in health and safety so have finally decided to follow that route. I’m lucky that our SHE manager has offered to mentor me to help get to my end goal of my 5 year plan. Unfortunately it looks like I will have to pay for all of the courses myself and try and juggle it aside my day job. But I feel it will be worth it in the long run and can’t wait to get my first role in HS. This is my first video I have watch and found it very useful and love the basic step by step guide. Thanks again
Hey Lee,
I am not sure where you are based but in the UK at least you can get a SHE apprenticeship that is pretty much completely funded, could be somthing to pitch to your employer?
Thankyou I am in the UK (South) so something I will look into if I can’t get funding through the business I’m just waiting to find out.
Great video found it really interesting, about to find the podcast. What do you think about outsourcing Health & Safety?
We offer consultancy so we are for it in a sense lol. There are a lot of poor quality consultants out there like there is for many Professions. Outsourcing is also normally a much better solution for smaller and medium size businesses.
Could you advice me on the first step(s) to take if I want to start my career as a Health, safety and environmental officer

Thanks for your reply!
Very refreshing. Good advice. Thank you!
No worries Carl, tha us for commenting m glad you liked it.
Do you recommend getting your masters in health and safety? I have my bachelors degree but it’s not in health and safety or anything related. I also work in the oilfields, oil & gas industry.
Qualifications are great for formalising your knowledge and getting you interviews but experience is always better for getting the job done!
Lovely video.
I am 26 and a civil engineer. I am considering diverting into health, safety and environment.
1. Ain't I late in thinking of changing career path?
2. I want to start by taking nebosh certificate course. Will that be a good option?
Thanks.
Never too late!!
And NEBOSH is the standard but maybe look at NCRQ as well
What advice have you got for someone who has a fire risk assessment level three can we do the attend safety advisor?
Depends what you mean by level 3 but most approved fire risk assessment schemes not will require the entry level qualification with experience under a mentor.
@@RebrandingSafety I mean a level 3 certificate in fire risk assessment. Because I have been looking for a job in fire safety due to because I’m a new entry they can’t give me the job. It’s so frustrating, so what do you advise me to do? Thank you.
Thank you so much for clarifications , hope if you can send books to prepare myself for NEBOSH , NCR q / mvq
No problem. I cant send my books no sorry.
@@RebrandingSafety thanks 🙏 , i didn't ask about your books, generally preferable books 📚 , salutations
Is a NEBOSH qualification enough to get a job?? I’m interested in a career change
The general certificate should enable you to be considered for entry level jobs yeah
Awesome! Good luck!!!
I am looking at getting in to health and safety but I'm no spring chicken have you any information where I can start please
Thanks
Paul
Im on a NEBOSH apprenticeship crazy ride
NEBOSH Apprenticeship?? What's that like??
Hi there stumbling on this video I have a degree in IT n not worked for a few years but wanna get back into things this job is appealing to me as I don't really want a it job anymore. Trying figure out how to go about it
It's a challenge to change careers at any age so best of luck!!
NEBOSH is the entry level popular qualification that would be a good place to start if you can afford to self fund.
Do you have to do the nebosh general certificate in order to do the fire and safety certificate ?
If I rember rightly yes. But if you don't want to do that you could look into some IFSM or IFE accredited fire safety courses.
I'm currently working as EHS Specialist in Philip Morris International (Pakistan plant) and have around 5 years of experience. I'm currently confuse about either going for nebosh idip or csp. Kindly guide me in this regard.
18 years scaffolding all over the world. Looking to get into safety after a sssts course I had. Safety officer/training I'm looking into changing to
Well best of luck Dean!!
Maybe look into apprenticeships, A lot.of them are funded so maybe your employer could put you through it.
Is Nebosh igc certificate is equally valued in UK like Nebosh general for job
I should expect so....
Also depends on which type of organization you would want to work for both private, federal, health care, construction or even the financial sector
Yeah fair point!

No way buddy. Whilst I do moan a lot in the podcast that we need more "youth" in the profession, and I stand by that, we do. What we actually need is more diversity, so if will only have youth in the profession we would have the same issues we have now but the other way round.

I’m interested in pursuing a career in health and safety. But where would I even begin?
Hard to be specific but some broad points.
Just start by building knowledge and experiance, register for as many free webinars, events, mailing lists etc. Listen to podcast, videos etc absorb as much information as possible. Try if possible to get experience by volunteering as the safety rep at work. When when ready start considering the the formal entry level qualifications like NEBOSN or NVQ or NCRQ ( they may vary around the world)
A good degree in the UK is in Emergency Planning and Disaster Management for those that want to look at a different tier

Maybe my response won't help you but......If they don't take you seriously do you want to work with them?
what is the minimum requirements for health and safety officer in uk. Is experience in Dubai acceptable?

Experience will always catch you out. Qualification wise you are covered but you will need to try and get experience.
Is there bias towards women in this job/field? How much of the job is required to be in the field vs in office?
I dont think there is a bias towards any gender to be honest. The field office split depends on your employer to be honest but it should be more field in my opinion.
Is it worth to study h&s 4.5 years in uni . Cant you get the same qualification through sepperated courses that are less expensive and faster to do?
Hey I have an LLB, is possible to get a job as a health and safety officer?
