Written by Sarah VanMetre | mGoBlue.com
The University of Michigan women's basketball team rallied from a three-point deficit entering the fourth quarter, outscoring No. 17-ranked Ohio State 27-15 in the final period in a 69-60 win over the Buckeyes on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 30) at Crisler Center in front of a season-high 8,078 fans.
Laila Phelia scored on Michigan's final possession of the third quarter to bring the Wolverines within three points entering the final frame. Elissa Brett hit a corner triple on the opening possession to knot the game at 45. The teams went back-and-forth over the next several minutes until Michigan (11-3, 2-0 Big Ten) nudged ahead 53-51 on a Jordan Hobbs jumper in the lane to beat the shot clock. That ignited a 9-0 U-M spurt that featured four points from Lauren Hansen and a triple from Phelia for a 60-51 lead with 2:48 remaining.
Michigan's lead never dipped below two possessions the rest of the way as Brett and Hansen combined to go 7-for-8 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal Michigan's first win over a ranked team this season.
Phelia played all 40 minutes, turning in a career-best 26 points with four boards and two steals. Hansen went for 17 points, two boards, two assists and four steals, with Brett (10) and Hobbs (11) rounding out Michigan's double-figure scorers. Michigan held a 34-27 advantage on the glass and forced 19 OSU turnovers, turning those into 18 points.
Ohio State (10-3, 1-1 Big Ten) scored first, but U-M answered with a 7-0 run while holding the Buckeyes scoreless for 4:28, forcing an OSU timeout with 5:02 remaining in the first quarter. The spurt featured five points from Hobbs and two from Hansen, while the Wolverines drew three charges on the offensive end for the early 7-2 lead.
Michigan led by as many as eight points in the frame but was held scoreless over the last 3:01 after a Brett triple, taking a 12-11 lead on Ohio State after 10 minutes of action.
OSU scored the first six points of the second quarter for a 17-12 lead before Taylor Williams made good on a pair of free throws with 7:23 remaining. Michigan slowly chipped away at the Ohio State lead, pulling back ahead 22-20 on a Phelia banked three-pointer with 3:25 on the second-quarter clock.
The teams went back-and-forth over the final minutes of the second quarter, with Hobbs hitting a stepback three at the top of the key on Michigan's final possession to send U-M to the locker room with a 27-26 lead.
Michigan opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run, keeping OSU off the board for the first 3:30 for a 34-26 lead off a Hansen left-wing triple. Much like Michigan held Ohio State scoreless to begin the third, the Buckeyes returned the favor over 3:55 in the middle stages of the quarter. During that, OSU uncorked a 13-0 run for a 40-37 lead before Hansen made one at the line with 1:51 remaining.
Phelia made a hanging jumper on Michigan's final possession of the third as Ohio State held a 45-42 lead after 30 minutes of action.
Michigan continues Big Ten action on Thursday (Jan. 4), heading to Bloomington to face Indiana at 7 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
