The Poson Full Moon Poya Day/ Poson festival that was celebrated last Saturday has great significance to Sri Lankan Buddhists. It is the day on which Emperor Asoka’s son, Arahat Mahinda Thera, introduced Buddhism or the teachings of the Buddha to the island in the 3rd Century B.C. Therefore, when Buddhists celebrate the Poson festival, they are paying homage to the ‘Truth’ expounded by the Buddha. Because the teachings of the Buddha are considered to be the ‘Truth’.
The Poson festival was celebrated in grand style on Saturday in Homagama. The Dansals were in operation, and it must be mentioned that this feature of Poya is certainly in keeping with the teachings of the Buddha, as Buddha’s teachings are based on compassion and service to others. We know that there are many from different faiths who visit these Dansalas just to experience what it is like mingling with common folk. On the way to Homagama we passed so many Dansals serving food and beverages.
The celebrations in Homagama, were as vibrant as ever, drawing in large crowds. No doubt, amongst them were devotees who were there to pay homage and others who were simply fascinated by the vibrancy. It was a very diverse group of people. The afterlife is a part of Buddhist doctrine and the Pandals which are colourfully lit illustrations of the past life stories of the Buddha are normally a part of the festivities. A giant Pandal was erected near NSBM. Celebrating Poson Poya in the ‘Homagama Style’, was certainly memorable. It was a success. It was a highly anticipated event. There was much excitement and enthusiasm.
This is the biggest Poson event held in the Colombo District. There is a special transport service for those visiting the Poson Zone and 65 private buses will run from 6 a.m. to 12 midnight throughout the Zone. An open invitation is extended to all to visit the ‘Dharma Rashmi’ Poson Zone on all three days (7 p.m. to 12 midnight) and those who wish to make any contribution should call over at the Homagama Divisional Secretary.

‘ධර්ම රශ්මී’ පොසොන් කලාපය එළඹෙන 03, 04 සහ 05 යන දිනවලදී පැවැත්වෙන අතර, දිනපතා සවස 06 සිට රාත්‍රි 12 දක්වා විනාඩි 15කට වරක් මෙම ප්‍රවාහන සේවා සඳහා හෝමාගම පිටකොටුව (138) හා කොට්ටාව මොරගහහේන (129) පෞද්ගලික බස්රථ සංගම්වල බස් රථ හිමිකරුවන් විසින් මෙම සත්කාරයට දායකවේ. වසර තුනකට පසු මෙවර හෝමාගම, පිටිපන ආශ්‍රිතව පැවැත්වෙන පොසොන් උළෙලට සමගාමිව කෞතුකාගාර දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව සතුව ඇති නීලගිරි ශ්‍රී සර්වඥ ධාතූන් වහන්සේ ප්‍රදර්ශනයක්ද 3-5 තෙක් තෙදින තුළ හෝමාගම ශ්‍රී සුගත බිම්බාරාමයේදී පැවැත්වේ. හරිත සරසවිය විසින් සංවිධානය කරන වෛද්‍ය සායනය සහ ලේ දන් දීමේ ව්‍යාපාරය, පොත් දන්සල, බොදු බැති ගී, රූකඩ සන්දර්ශන ඇතුළු සංස්කෘතික අංග රැසක් පැවැත්වේ. හැටදහසකට අධික පිරිසකට මහා බත් දන්සලක් පැවැත්වෙන අතර පොසොන් කලාපය ගොඩගම සිට මීගොඩ දක්වා මහා කූඩු ප්‍රදර්ශනයක්ද පැවැත්වේ.
