Aussie Hard House DJ here, back in the Day there were like 5 of us in Sydney that played the Hard stuff that scratched, we shared whatever small clips we could find ONLY amongst ourselves and talked ENDLESSLY trying to figure out how you guys did this We replicated what we could but fuck me, we never got ANYWHERE near this What i LOVED about Scratching/Turntablism was the tactile FEEL of Vinyl ALL Analog, Practice Bred Precision, NOWHERE TO HIDE Man Im soooo happy i found this channel
Excellent video! I loved the whole Mr. Thing routine that he did in the world final, especially that ending with that "transform" scratch. Mind blowing. And I also loved Tigerstyle's routines as well. He's got a great style and his music choice is different for sure. I have his break record he put out a while ago. Keep these coming!
Awesome video Blakey!! Took me back!! And absolutely loving the content idea also!! At last a youtube channel that covers the subject and art of Turntablism / DJ Battle's! 👏🙏 Keep up the dope work champ! 👏👊💪
As a side note... I think a live stream watch along series of various UK Finals much like the 98 US Final watch along dmc did with Craze, Dummy etc.. a couple years back would be a crazy dope idea!! And if anyone could pull it off??.. 🤷♂️😉😎👊🙏
I'm so old I remember when Cut Master Swift was considered new school! Back then DJ Cheese was the man to beat so when Swift appeared on the scene, us Brits were stoked. I've seen both Cheese and Swift live, Cheese in 86 and I think Swift in 88, although i remember that 89 set well. Thank you for this compilation, I do enjoy your channel.
So many memories watching these, we were real lucky in Belfast to have a lot of these DJs visit Northern Ireland. We never get quality turntablists like that now, maybe once or twice a year if lucky but there was someone visiting every other week back then.
Same here in Newcastle every week. We had Noize regularly come here, QBert, Craze, Develop, Quest from BPSH, Kid Koala, ATrak, Perverts, plus loads more. Nowadays I don't think a single scratch dj comes here, and I'm too old to be bothered going out now!
Noize played good few times in a club I played in. Small grimey club that also had scratch perverts, a trak, cash money and others play. Same though you never see them now. Yoda played while back but that’s it
Very dope list. The UK has always been the most original with how they approach the turntables. I would add Quest and Muzzell to the list as well but you cant go wrong with UK champs. 🔥🔥🔥
Criminal that Woody never won DMC, one of the most technically adept UK battlers ever yet super funky with it as well. Some cool choices here: Mad Cut's routine with 2Pac 'I Get Around' from 2000 would probably take it over the one from 2001. Plus One's 'Can I Kick It?' routine gets feels really overlooked because of what comes after it. Honourable mention to Skully's Porn Theatre Usher's juggle in 2003
Love Mr Things 2000 routine. Never saw the UK set, but his World Final routine got him a worthy 3rd place if I remember rightly. I used to have the 1200 mixer, and whilst it was basic, the sound was so good, you didn't need a mid and high controller.
Cut master swift&dj pogo are very nice guys, was jam with them in pogo home back in the day.also so lucky met Tony Vega in record shop mr.Bingo.saw him practice routine before he go championship.love those djs from UK,they are so nice.great old day ❤
Unbelievable to think that all these routines actually involved putting the needle on the record, changing the records mid routine as I’ve said before in another post,no stems,no rekordbox,no laptop,no pads and no break records, this was true artistry and true djing in its true form
Showing my age here I’ll admit but I can remember seeing Simon Harris and Froggy DJing in a nightclub in I’m sure ilford,in the early 80s,not DMC winners I know but they were certainly good at beat mixing,I know Harris went on to bigger and better things and Froggy died quite young
1999 was peak DMC for me too. Plus One was insane. Scratch Perverts always had such great musicality and fun in their routines. I think for the crowd to love it, it's gotta sound good as well as be skillful. And man, I tried to do that Mr Thing "C'mon it's time to get funky" scratch so many times - never really got close to being as clean as him :)
I remember when my homie received the dmc 99 tape. He called us up to come over and watch it. My mind was blown ... p-trix, Tony Vegas, dexta with the frontier psychiatrist shit and then craze who blew the competition out of the frame ... p-trix seemed to be pissed off by his 3rd place though ...
All legends for sure . A big one for me was Dj Reckless. I think 1990 the European DMC finals which he won if I'm not mistaken. I was the Bang zoom (let's go go) chase was mind blowing for me at the time. Near 30 years on and dj are still using the chase technic...
Please do Shiftee’s routine mate. Not the best set ever but it’d be a crazy video to have an ex champion breakdown, with him paying homage to several iconic prev champions. Missy Elliot bit still goes so hard even today, even if it isn’t the most technical
I was at the '99 Edinburgh heat that Plus One won. He actually told me he really liked my set. The venue was jam-packed with DJs in the afternoon, and it took hours for everyone to get up on stage. I got through to the later part of the heat that night, but it was so dark in the club, that I couldn't tell the green and blue stickers apart on my records, and I messed up. It's funny, 3 years later, in '02, I came back after a 3-year break and entered the Glasgow heat, and there were only about 7 of us there. By the way, it actually snowed, for about 15 minutes, in Edinburgh, when I was on my way to the venue, in fucking July!!. It must've been an altitude thing.
By the way, that Winston Churchill-esque voice that the Scratch Perverts used at the end was actually recorded by one of their friends especially for the battle.

It’s a great question. Apparently he is doing well but just doesn’t have anything to do with DJing anymore last time I heard. He was always one of my favs. Legend
