- Discover how designer Vanessa Francis transformed her sister Arlene Vieria’s dated space into a timeless black and white kitchen. She replaced the arched upper cabinets, green laminate counters and fruit-patterned backsplash with modern two-toned Ikea cabinetry and cool bronzed nickel hardware. By extending the countertop, Vanessa was able to give Arlene plenty of space to prep and cook. A statement-making black pantry delivers ample storage, while a petite eat-in nook with dreamy blue drapes is the perfect place to dine. Watch this video for Vanessa’s small kitchen design tips.

Love the pantry and hardware!!
I am going to paint my kitchen like yours!!!
I love everything about this kitchen-amazing thought went into every choice, and it all paid off!! “Don’t interrupt me!!” Sisters😂
I love how the kitchen turned out! It’s a very relatable space. I just wish the walls were clad in something other than subway tile...
Atanasia MANDRU I think something other than that would be too much.
We renovated our basement kitchen last summer and realized how expensive tiles are!!!! Subway tiles are generally the cheapest option. So I think that might be the reason they chose it since she mentioned she was on a budget 😊
Loved it! Those are two well-preserved sisters. Can't believe she's been in the house 23 years! Nice update!
Love it
Oh sisters...
Oh! The pale blue curtains in the dining part of the kitchen!
For a small space the designer did a great job updating the kitchen to make it feel open while keeping it functional with Ikea cabinetry.
So simple and so beautiful. Black and white is timeless too. Are the floor tiles porcelain?
"do not interrupt me!"...that scary to me but funny cuz we know sisters behave like that all the time.
I'm surprised at the comments, I love the tiles choices. The floor tiles are nice and large with less grout, so easy to clean up messes in a kitchen. I also think the subway tiles are a good budget friendly choice as a splash back. I like the look of the Ikea kitchen also.
subway tiles have become a cliche, like almost every hipster have that as backsplash already. and they also look dirty.
@@camabkamuvoba7467 Hi Camill, thank you for your comment. I love subway tiles because they're so versatile, I think everyone uses them because they provide so many options, they're often a softer tile so they're great for DIY, they come in so many styles and colours, you can lay them every which way to create something beautiful, they're easy to clean and they're really budget friendly. Often you can also use subway tiles as an understated feature in a kitchen and then let your cabinetry, and bench or your appliances be the feature. Another benefit it that if you ever damage a subway tile, it doesn't matter, because they're easy to find and replace. You want that in a kitchen in my opinion.
Amazing transformation. Feels way bigger. I was surprise that black works on a small space.
That's one of the better IKEA comercials I've seen.
?
I agree...your sister has great taste. Love your new kitchen!
What a wonder Kitchen! This is exactly the chic, simple design I want in my home. It’s a kitchen made to be loved and lived in
May I ask what is the total cost for the remodel?
Vanessa looks like Mindy from the Mindy Project tv-series 🙂
Love this kitchen! Vanessa always does an amazing job on her designs.
Vanessa has a timeless yet modern aesthetic that we love!
They really made it work -- with the black and white aesthetic. The black cabinetry provides a nice contrast with the white. (It would have been boring if it were all one color, IMHO). :-)
Nice. Black is the new white. And also black.
ardas, that was brilliant. Lol
The kitchen is pretty and fresh. Great idea to paint the hanging cupboards. The contrast of black and white is very nice. I also like the size... small table for a smaller family. More realistic than the enormous tables in other videos for complete football teams... :--)) the references to the bicycle shop are sweet and very personal. Compliments from Germany for the two sympathetic sisters!
I love the idea of extending storage into the dining area. The black is a nice contrast.
It’s a beautiful transformation.
What color of black paint is the tall wall cabinetry ?
It's Ikea's LERHYTTAN line of kitchen cabinets.
🌸💕Oh wow! Where do I begin?? I adore this space! From the floors to the high pantry storage unit. Way to go IKEA!👍🏾😊 Everything looks beautiful. And it definitely feels modern and cozy at the same time!💕
Amazing make over ! (and love the table !!)
yass same layout as my condo kitchen and design that i love black and white.. i can just show this to my contractor hahaha thank you
Hi ! Does this black kitchen stains easily finerprints etc ?
Amei.......
It's the first kitchen I really love. Well done.
So beautiful! Major upgrade!
Where's the fridge?
Wow nice upgrade from dark and dingy to bright and fresh 👌🏼
Nice job. I like it.
I'm sorry, is she a vampire? How has she been in the house for 23 years? Unless this is a childhood home....she's a vampire.
Beautiful!!! Congratulations
this video never shows what they did with the doorway next to the stove.
I love the black cabinets
Beautiful home
Nice 👍
The transformation is incredible - the old space looked depressing.
I think it's just gorgeous. I wish you could come design a new kitchen for me!
Nice and practical. I like the floor-to-ceiling cabinet. I disagree with the tiles (too much used). And I think it needs some more comfortable seating furniture.
Yes I like the kitchen too. It is very functional and fits her lifestyle because she loves to cook. I would agree about the dining seating and table style, but perhaps that is what fit the tight budget she mentioned? I am not sure if they had any plants that could compliment the black and white theme?
What is the name of the black ikea pantry cabinets and how much do they cost?
Beautiful kitchen! I take it you guys cut out the part of them physically brawling through the kitchen 😂 just kidding. The tension could have been left out of the video. Made it a little cringy to watch, but I will say that kitchen is stunning!
Agree
Absolutely charming 💕💕
This is absolutely stunning.
how much would this update cost?
Happiness beautiful family mamjitoo
love this@ great use of a small space
U guys did a great job👍
How much was spent?
It is really beautiful. Exactly the combination of colours, I am aiming in my kitchen. It is relieving to see it is going to be gergeous.
0:13 LOL
Very cozy and warm
Like it , also like the dining table set , want to found out where she purchased
Gorgeous. Three years later I would be honored to have that kitchen.
Which high cabinets make up the black pantry from Ikea? I can't seem to find them :(
Gotta need proof that they're sisters... successfully provided
We want to renovate our kitchen too, but we don't know where to find people to do the job.
Beautiful timeless kitchen!
Beautiful, so jealous. 😊
Love the 2 tone.
Lovely.
Does anyone know door fronts were from Ikea too? If so, what model?
Would i be able to pull this off? I love the two tone with white upper, but my cabinet are espresso with mix brown countertops.
My style is
Rustic farmhouse/British colonial
What are the dimensions of the kitchen...
Prob missed it admiring the decor🙈
Is the pantry from Ikea too?
I love the matte black cabinetry and the pantry. That one shelf over the sink look so far apart from the room until it looks like an after thought as to what to do with the space. I would have preferred a dramatic ceiling light over the table. But those cabinets...swoon.
Divina!

this shinny new kitchen will eventually end up like your old one
The pantry looks like office cabinet storage used for copy paper and extra paper clips, and other office supplies.
couldve put a two-seater banquette opposite two chairs along the right wall... with a nice rectangular table.. wouldve opened the space up alot more... the fridge is too big... needs some more personality...please stop with the subway tiles... those handles are hideous... the floor is also hideous
Matthew Voeltz, well, sounds like someone got up from the wrong side of the banquette after breakfast. I love a cozy windowside banquette and table, too, but in a small storage deprived kitchen they got a lot of vertical cubic square space in that bold but demure wall of pantry (the door handles blend in beautifully with the black matte cabinets). As for opening up the space more, the smaller round table and almost see-through chairs let in maximum outside light and views without impeding movement. The ease and quickness with which the cook could access the pantry was one of the priorities of the new design (so that she would recover her cooking mojo). Also related to said mojo was a need of more counter space between stove and sink. One additional priority was to eliminate the cramped feeling in the tight workspace. That was easily achieved by the white uppers and loosing the micro and uppers above the range. The new black range hood coordinates beautifully with the black cabinets and is showcased brilliantly against the classic simplicity of the subway tile. Visually, all the whiteness of uppers and subway tile lends the cook headspace to breath (think and create) while preparing meals. I also like the counter height and open surrounding countertop space of the microwave. I like the personality that the simpler black and white palette brings to the sleeker more workable kitchen. And to answer the other commenter, the restrained use of the one natural wood shelf makes it pop against the tile but is echoed by the natural wood table. I liked this design for its looks and also how it addressed the needs of the customer. OK, I would change one thing. The floor mat is dull. I would like coloring that would echo the wood tone of the shelf above it!
Subway tile became popular because it was supposedly "timeless," but white subway tile was never as popular as it is today. It's so overdone these days it's gonna look dated and be associated with this decade. Besides, I never really liked the look. Makes your walls look like a giant Pink Floyd poster. I wish we would see more creative use of materials instead of endlessly copying the same designs over and over again.
I think many do this because if they sell home that what most home buyers want. True if I have a kitchen and I want going sell it got a long time I would choose something that is my own style not just how everyone does it. I would chosen glass tile in a actual color make it pop.
Justin H I love my new kitchen with subway tiles - can't go wrong with anything that is timeless
People probably do pick white subway tile for resale value, but this is H&H not a Home Depot DIY.
These are real homes with real budgets. You might crave something different but budgets will always dictate design choices.
@@houseandhome it's true that budgets are important, but white subway tile isn't the only budget friendly material, it's just the least creative. It's been put in the vast majority of kitchens for a decade now. I know you're capable of doing better.
