Geologically speaking, this isn't unexpected. South America has alwasy been moving slightly differntly than the North American plate. Such fault lines should be all over Panama. Even when the canal was being built this was known, just not in great detail. At one time before the canal became operational, there was an idea of building a sealevel canal through Nicaragua, but was deemed uneconimical at the time - it even resurfaced with the idea of digging the canal using nuclear bombs to clear a canal, but that was dropped due to the release of high concentrations of hazardous radioactive waste.
That’s a major reason why America should start manufacturing more of our own goods for electronics and automotive products instead of importing it in from other countries. Shut down the foreign trade’s imports that are junk .quantity doesn’t make up for quality.
The intentional mismanagement of placing most manufacturing of electronics out of the USA is part of the problem. More manufacturing and good can be moved to be made in the USA. As far as the water management problems, recycling the water it seems could be easily done, but corporations would rather ruin the environment to save a few pennies.
