Most of the opponents in Mean Bean Machine literally only appear in the first episode of The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
(excluding Coconuts, Grounder, Scratch and Dr. Robotink)
Could of done it with common enemies based on the game like Kirby did but decided to go with the TV show. Very cool. The continue screen is from the show as well.

Ok first off 10:47 Based Reference, All my Homies will get the Big Dog reference.
And second, in Japan Dr. Robotnik was named Eggman. Unsure why it was orginally named Eggman, maybe it was everyone who worked on Sonic 1 thought he looked like an egg. It might have to Do with his original Concept art where he just looked like an Egg.
Then when Sonic 1 was going Overseas, the Lead Developer wanted Eggman's Name to be more of a Nickname, and to also appeal to the audience over in the North. Thus Dr. Robotnik was born.
Then in Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic in the NA version of the Game used "Eggman" as an Insult, but he was still technically named Robotnik.
And after the small References to his Original Name, Both Teams just decided on Eggman, Again, mostly because he looks like an Egg. Also it was probably the series leading into a more comedical side of stories and having a Villain Named "Eggman" Fits that bill.
But yeah to some people it is a Down Grade. But it fits. Also this whole video and No Mention of "BRONTO BURT!" How could you. :/

Two fun facts about Kirby's Avalanche and Dr. Robotnik's MBM:
1. Kirby's Avalanche appears to be the only game where Kirby himself has actual dialogue. Other Kirby games have him with a baby voice. Considering Kirby replaces Arle from the original Puyo Puyo, it makes sense there.
2. Dr. Robotnik's MBM's opponents are taken straight from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, more specifically, aside from Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts, the other opponents in the line up make an appearance in the episode, Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad, which details the origins of Scratch and Grounder. You could see characters like Dragon Breath, Arms, Squeel, and Frankly in that meeting that Sonic crashes at the beginning of the flashback.

The name is interterchangable. Sometimes i call him Robotnik, sometimes I call him eggman
He *was* Eggman in the og Japanese games but localizers changed it to Robotnik. Iizuka made both names canon in Adventure by making Ivo Robotnik his real name and “Eggman” Sonic’s nickname for him. In Frontiers Eggman says he accepted the nickname as a way to defy Sonic’s mockery.

You are not alone in that statement. Many prefer the Robotnik moniker. All though, he’s called Eggman because that was his OG name in Japan. “Robotnik” was something that SEGA of America did for some reason.

About Eggman’s name, in Sonic Adventure 1 they made a retcon of sorts to where the cast always calls him Eggman, but his true name is Ivo Robotnik

Or he was called like this in the JP versions. Where they get the name Robotnik then? I don't know, but it gets more absurd when you gotta realise that Eggman's grandfather Gerald is actually called Robotnik in the JP version. That was his whole name. He wasn't called Gerald, just Robotnik.

Mean Bean Machine was my first exposure to the Puyo Puyo series, and I have been a fan of it ever since. It was also my first exposure to Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the best parts of my childhood.

Whenever I play one of these games for nostalgia's sake, I always get hit with the "Oh yeah, this was a repaint of the FIRST Puyo Puyo game" because quite a few things that ended up becoming series staples got introduced in the second game. For example, you desperately needing a purple piece at around 4:18 and the game just not giving it to you? The second game fixed this issue where it almost has a bit of a mercy system, where after a certain amount of pieces without a certain color it's guaranteed to give you that color so the issue pops up much less often. It also introduced the ability be able to rotate the pieces 180 degrees even if it's in a one wide space, which is usually where my muscle memory causes me to mess up whenever I play these older ones because I'm very used to being able to do that.

I tried replaying it maybe 2 years ago and I will say, it felt kinda scuffed. Eventually you sorta get used to how mario feels to control in that game but I'd say you're justified in struggling with that game lol
