we studied this on a safety course last year - apparently it was something to do with the chemical being highly reactive / explosive with water.... so the initial fire was something to do with that, but then the fire service came and guess what they used to try and douse it :-/
The firefighters surely lacked the expertise to deal with the substances, but they had no idea what's in there in the first place. Why they had no idea? This is where some very Chinese (or I rather say, universal, under certain circumstances) thing comes in. It's a disaster, but more of a tragedy as well...
The horrible fact about all this is, that in the aftermath the Chinese Government suppressed all facts on the fatalities. Just for example, the firestation in the vicinity of the explosions perished - with all staff. Pictures from killed firefighters were erased from the web shortly after. Events like that only happen due to greed and ignorance. Rest in peace poor people who died in this horrible and totally unnecessary accident.

Apart from the tragedy of the people killed in the explosion, for me one of the worst parts in this video is that in the beginning the people in the room is even laughing at the accident cause they kinda feel safe and in the distance. then when they realize they could be in danger too they start to freak out. This sums up on how we look at things today. No empathy at all till something could affect you directly

I remember vehicles crammed into a very large yard along with propane tanks and barrels of "who knew what." I really feel for the families who were injured or died in this incident.
