Hi aileen. I grew up in the same english town and county as the first singer on this song Paul young. And knew him personally before he was a pro singer and pop star. Before he was famous he was an apprentice mechanical assembler for Vauxhall Motor Car Company and trained on the assembly line next to his dad and mine

Fun fact, if not already mentioned. This arrangement, We are the World and the first Live Aid concert in the 80's. were all (chiefly) organized by Bob Geldof, which has been mentioned. However, there is very cool tie in for Aileen. He played the lead character, Pink, in the movie/theatrical release of Pink Floyd's The Wall (of which many songs have been covered here) Knowing Aileen's new(ish) found love for Pink Floyd, wanted to throw this in there 🙂

Wrong. The Concert for Bangladesh organized by George Harrison was in the early 70s with a similar Humanitarian effort to raise $$ for that part of the world.

The worst was deciding which children she could feed and save and which she could not. This song came on the radio and naturally, she felt really resentful. However, she then described what it was like when a convoy of articulated lorries turned up with all the supplies she so desperately needed, made possible by releasing one song. If you really want to dive in and get to know these artists (and the We Are the World artists), you could spend weeks just reacting to the awesome performances from the Summer of 1985 LIVE AID CONCERT, broadcast LIVE on MTV, worldwide, with massive stages primarily in Wembley in London, and at a huge old sports stadium in Philadelphia, with some smaller concerts in various other countries. A great way to delve into both legendary artists of that era and to see who the up and coming newer singers and bands of that time, as pop and classic rock had morphed into New Wave, soul and funk into the beginnings of rap/hip hop, and hard rock was turning into metal etc. A great way to educate yourself and discover new music.
The great Phil Collins of Genesis on drums. Sting (Police), Bono (U2), George Micheal, Paul Young, Duran Duran, Midge Ure (Ultravox), Bananarama (the 3 young chicks who look like they just woke up), Boy George etc and Bob Geldof of course who started this all. This was a charity effort to raise money for Famine relief in Africa. This led to We Are the World and then the HUGE world wide LIVE AID CONCERT in the summer of 1985. At that time the biggest concert event since Woodstock in 1969. Band Aid was primarily young English New Wave artists and singers. Many were still unknown to mainstream rock American audiences in 1984. Obviously Sting and Bono were new superstars by then.
As someone else where most of my family is far away I feel you on the comment of how rough it is to be separate at something like Christmas. But the beauty of the internet, is the ability to share and connect and experience things together. I live in Oregon, my parents live in Ohio and my sibling in Michigan. I hope you are able to get to see your family soon!
You _NEED_ to do "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" by Small Town Titans. It's a hard rock/metal version of the song from the cartoon. The singer has a voice. _DEEP_

It is a lonely time for those of us who are alone sweetheart especially when we have such fond memories of Christmas in the past, but at least we can share online. I give you a big Christmas hug from England.
i was pretty young when this came out but still remember it so clearly. the 1980s were far from perfect but there was so much more of an appreciation of our society, life and a genuine interest to help those in need (not just virtual signal victimhood). i remember thinking at the time how cool it was that 37 very individualist singers from the mtv generation put there own selves aside for a bit and do something together to honestly try to make a difference. i certainly do not see that happening today especially for the right reasons. enjoy and merry Christmas!🎄
Thanks Aileen! It's actually even a pretty good song. If you're looking for Christmas stuff I'd suggest "I Believe In Father Christmas" by Greg Lake or "Father Christmas" by The Kinks. If you're not, disregard the suggestions. Either way thanks and Merry Christmas!
Band Aid was a charity single released at Xmas 84 recorded in a single day when Bob Geldof and Midge Ure wanted to raise money for the terrible Ethiopian famine of the time. This then led to the US We Are The World single and then the incredible Live Aid show in July 85
This was the original super group colab in 1984 in response to the famine in Ethopia. It was the idea of Bob Geldof and he put together all the biggest names of the time and donated all proceeds to help Ethopians.
It is a powerful song (I have recently come to appreciate it) with a great message and for a great cause, that did a lot of good and led to the Live Aid concert the following year. I do think the song is perhaps not executed as well as it could have been, but that is forgivable given that, I believe, conception to release was quite literally a single week. Really enjoyed your reaction.
I don't remember if it was Band Aid or USA for Africa, but they totally re-recorded that particul;ar song on the 25th anniversary of the song that transcended music genres.
And it was Bob Geldof (Bomtown rats) who formed the Band Aid, don´t forget that. Bomtownt rats are known for their hit I don´t like Mondays. A true story about a schoolshooting
The best part about this is it was a sunday morning and most of them had had bugger all sleep. They didn't know it was going to be filmed too. Aileen! they've just released a new documentary about this song and it's definately worth a watch. 🤶🎅🧑🎄❄
@@rileyandmike It's correct if you learnt proper English at school. "Had had is the past perfect form of 'have'. It is used to talk about any action that happened in the past prior to another event occurring in the past. In other words, it is used to convey something which has two time frames or to talk about when two actions are separated by time." Bugger all means none.

Canadian Artist as well made a song
As someone else where most of my family is far away I feel you on the comment of how rough it is to be separate at something like Christmas. But the beauty of the internet, is the ability to share and connect and experience things together. I live in Oregon, my parents live in Ohio and my sibling in Michigan. I hope you are able to get to see your family soon!
You _NEED_ to do "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch" by Small Town Titans. It's a hard rock/metal version of the song from the cartoon. The singer has a voice.
_DEEP_
Song Breaks my heart 💔..God Bless 🙏🏼🙏🏼
You gotta get yourself home to Texas to be with your folks for Christmas, Aileen.
I'm a 70 Ur old English guy who watched the build up to this vid and later LIVE AID..love your reaction as a much younger person..may I say what a beautiful young lady you are..should be on mainstream TV lol..Merry Christmas to you and your family.x
At the time this was the best selling single ever amd it held the record for 15 or 16 years , Christmas number one , uk charts , its still in the top 5. , the money went to charity
Love this. Great British artists
Hello Aileen soon coming merry christmas to you. Hope you spend it with good people.
I remember when this song came out. It was magical.
Aileen, if you want to experiece a real Supergroup then you should try the Traveling Wilburys. You will be surprised who was in that group. And as you can see that I am old I want to share with you my most loved curistmas song: little drummer boy with David Bowie and Bing Crosby.
You have to check out the Metal charity group HearN Aid and the song stars, also inspired by Band Aid , HearN Aid was organized by Ronnie James Dio and was every 80s metal and hard rock icon they could get ! You're gonna love it!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
My favorite Christmas song of all time
I'm a HUGE U2 fan , but I didn't even know who U2 was at the time
BUT
Bono's part was my absolute favorite from the moment I heard it
I ADORE THIS SONG
SUCH A GREAT GREAT THING that was done
Followed by Live Aid
WOOOOOOOOW¡!!
I cherish the privilege of being a child of the 80s
Born in 71
Teen in 80s
Wow
It is a lonely time for those of us who are alone sweetheart especially when we have such fond memories of Christmas in the past, but at least we can share online. I give you a big Christmas hug from England.
Glad you recognized "the rule"...that is, everyone that you didn't recognize, you need to add to "the list" to be reacted to sometime in the future. 🙃
i was pretty young when this came out but still remember it so clearly. the 1980s were far from perfect but there was so much more of an appreciation of our society, life and a genuine interest to help those in need (not just virtual signal victimhood). i remember thinking at the time how cool it was that 37 very individualist singers from the mtv generation put there own selves aside for a bit and do something together to honestly try to make a difference. i certainly do not see that happening today especially for the right reasons. enjoy and merry Christmas!🎄
Beautiful girl, beautiful song and beautiful reaction 😊
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone be safe ❤
This started the whole thing! The first song for famine relief!
Aileen , when are you gonna do an autograph tour ? 🙂💞
Band Aid was a charity single released at Xmas 84 recorded in a single day when Bob Geldof and Midge Ure wanted to raise money for the terrible Ethiopian famine of the time. This then led to the US We Are The World single and then the incredible Live Aid show in July 85
Howard jones things can only get better and what is love and many others from him amazing 80s artist
Great video. Thanks for sharing this with us. Happy 2025 🙏🇬🇧
"Dear Bob and Midge" - This refers to Bob Geldof (Boomtown Rats) and Midge Ure (Ultravox), the songwriters behind the record.
Bob Geldof went to the USA to put together We are the world along with Michael Jackson, Lional Ritchie and Quincy Jones
Don't forget to check out the Ronnie James Dio led version of this called We're Stars with all the 80s metal singers
It was called Heear 'n Aid..The song was called Stars...And yes Aileen you should react to it!
The best part about this is it was a sunday morning and most of them had had bugger all sleep. They didn't know it was going to be filmed too. Aileen! they've just released a new documentary about this song and it's definately worth a watch. 🤶🎅🧑🎄❄
Had had bugger all sleep???
@@rileyandmike It's correct if you learnt proper English at school. "Had had is the past perfect form of 'have'. It is used to talk about any action that happened in the past prior to another event occurring in the past. In other words, it is used to convey something which has two time frames or to talk about when two actions are separated by time." Bugger all means none.
It continues to be a great song to listen to during Christmas.
The first one to sing is Paul Young. As a bassist you should know this artist because of the incredible frettless bass work Pino Pallidino does on his first three records. Especially "The Secret of Association".

You need to watch the documentary on how this song was put together it’s excellent
This song has been released a number of times throughout the decades. Band Aid II was released in December of 1989, Band Aid 20 was released in November of 2004, Band Aid 30 was released in November 2014. (Band Aid 30 raised money for the Ebola Crisis). And the most recent Band Aid 40 released in November of 2024 is a mixture of Band Aid 20 and Band Aid 30.
Shout out from Montreal, Canada... another great, joyous reaction... Love the outfit, by the way!😉 Even though your real family may be far, I'm sure you will be able to feel all 375K happy wishes sent your way. I Have a very beautiful and underplayed Christmas song to throw your way... Chris DeBurgh singing "A Spaceman Came Travelling"... it's a story of The Nativity Scene. Play the original album (Spanish Train and Other Stories), as the audio is best there. You will fall in love with the harmonics of him and choir.
On another note... here is some Hard Rock "Controlled Chaos!"... please react to "Frankenstein" performed live by The Edgar Winter Group. The title comes from the fact that the composition was written in fragments. Awesome talent, taking '70s technology to the Very Very Limit! Enjoy!
