Yes, replacing with BC549/BC550 would probably be "Best practice" as they are "Low noise" transistors. But On-semi's datasheet for these transistors only list them as being 0.8 to a few dB lower in noise than the regular BC547/548 s. But you could be (and probably will be) lucky, as the old transistors might be more noisy than the new ones.
I honestly can't remember. I don't think I filmed it because I don't always film all basic operations like cleaning switches. I probably just used my standard procedure which consists of Kontakt 60, WL and 61.

You can use a PNP germanium transistor for the left channel meter: just connect it reversed. Been there ..

Indeed. The main difference is in the maximum noise figure (4dB vs 10dB), but I doubt these original lockfit BC148s will still meet that spec.
