Not sure what the PL tone (CTCSS) is for a repeater? Just use the tone scanning feature to find it and you are ready to program any new repeater you come across.

Thanks to you, I finally understand how to get the scan ctcss function to work. No shortage of folks saying you can do it, but no real directions for noobs like me. Thank you!
A great feature in this radio that I use when traveling... I do a scan of frequencies until I get activity, then if I know it is more than likely a repeater, determine what the CTCSS is for the repeater with this quick scan as well.
I’ve been struggling to figure out why my FRS radio wouldn’t receive anything from any other radio, even though it would send just fine. With this I figured out why. Now I can list the channels and their related CTCSS frequencies. Granted you’re not supposed to use a ham radio on FRS, but it allows me to use all my radios together in an emergency. Thanks!
I knew this the first day I had my U v5r Read the manual people You can also use the volume nob As a disassembly tool For the ring Nut under the antenna.
Ok for us newbies, can you tell us what buttones you are pressing? Please... your thugmb is blocking which buttons are being pressed. I have a GT5r and I can NOT figure it out.
RUclips says someone replied, but I can’t see it, so here it is. Set to active frequency. Press “Menu” Go to option 11, “R-CTCS”(s) Press “Menu” Press “^” key to start at the lowest CTCSS frequency Press “Menu” to select that frequency and turn R-CTCSS on. You MUST do this before it will scan. If you do not see “CT” on the left, CTCSS is off and will not scan despite being in the CTCSS frequency selection. With CTCSS now on; Press Menu to renter CTCSS frequency selection. Press “*/SCAN” Wait for transmission on active frequency and allow the radio to scan for R-CTCSS. It sounds rather complicated typed out, but in practice it’s much simpler. Hope this helped!
Where I live my ht could not activate the closest repeter 22 miles away without using a yagi type antanna. Using an arrow antana I'm able to hit the repeter 90% of the time.
So basicly if someone using private codes to stop other peoples interfeing, if someone on the other side have tone scan option on radio they can still interfire, so what is the point of this tones?
El modo Scan funciona para los subtonos.. el caso es que del otro lado mantengan una modulación constante como para emparejar las radios y poder establecer comunicación con esa gente que justamente se puso un Subtono.. porque no quiere recibir interferencias de terceros.. 🙆🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️😁🤠👍🏻
Thank you so much for sharing this! There's a repeater a mile away from me but has very little traffic. It's PL tones are unlisted. If it ever transmits...
I was able to find the CTCSS frequencies for one of my cheap FRS radios using only the handheld. The station on the left is simply a stand in for any other radio.
I used this with my UV-5R but I have an issue. I found the tone and can transmit from my other radio, but when I try to transmit from my UV-5R I get nothing. Any suggestions?
Doesn't seem to work on my radio although it is not clear how you get it to scan instead of reverting to the previous frequencies and if you are doing this in channel or frequency mode?
You have to find a channel that someone is transmitting on first. Look up frequencies near you online or do what this guy did and use another radio to transmit.
I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed and I got my self a uv5r. I don’t have a license to use it but I want to tune into a local frequency to hear what’s going on but there is more to it than just frequency’s. There is tones and all this other stuff my mind can’t even process. Every one uses big technical mathy words I get lost quick when watching little tutorials on ham radios. What am I missing. I hat am I doing wrong?
It is scan for PL / CTCSS tones being used on the tuned frequency. Use case may be listening to the input frequency of a repeater to identify its tone. Once the tone is known you can program a channel for that repeater.
@@j69chevelle ah. I've seen input frequencies and tones in radio reference. Do I need any other equipment to scan or do I just need my UV-5R Also I have the European model so I can't use the PTT button unless I'm on a frequency I'm permitted to be on, or else I would be TXing illegally
He’s turning on R-CTCSS by selecting the lowest frequency, then going back to the frequency selection and pressing “SCAN”. Then when the radio receives a transmission (which he demonstrates using the other radio) it will automatically scan for the receiving CTCSS frequency till it finds it or the transmission stops. When the transmission continues, it will continue scanning.
Try these steps in Frequency Mode while monitoring the repeater receive frequency. Once you select R-CTCSS move to an arbitrary value, confirm and reselect R-CTCSS. So you set it to 67 but it is still capable of detecting whatever tone another radio is using?
67 HZ is the lowest CTCSS frequency, and it scans up when it is receiving.

I can hear people all day on my boefeng 5r but i feel like noone can hear me ?
Maybe you are not programming that repeater correctly
Probably need an offset and a ctcss tone

Its all in your head.
Try selecting the same R-CTCS (or DCS) frequency in T-CTCS
I need help to set mine up i have no clue what I'm doing. Newbie

I I need to
So this future i can scan for ctcss for any reapeter transmitting in my area..????
Yep
Now, that is very useful! What other things do you have up your sleve?
It won’t work on mine holding scan just makes ct flash on and off. What am I doing wrong?
Had these things for 10 years and didnt know this.
So basicly if someone using private codes to stop other peoples interfeing, if someone on the other side have tone scan option on radio they can still interfire, so what is the point of this tones?
Unless you're using digital modes and talk groups
The point of tones are to block out other people's conversations and only hear another radio which you have programmed with tone.
is that antenna you got a good one? I got a radioddity rd 371 and its worse than the stock it came with my radio is a 5rxp

where is scan button?
The "*" button. Top right.
You only need the handheld device for this or the statiom on the left is connected to it ?

Doesn't seem to work on my radio although it is not clear how you get it to scan instead of reverting to the previous frequencies and if you are doing this in channel or frequency mode?
Need a very strong receive signal.
It's not available in newer Uv 5r models the firmware changes and removed the ctcss scan feature.. I forget the firmware version that supports it
I had that problem and found that it doesn’t work in channel mode, so that could be your issue.
What does rhat mean ? Tone scan?
Do I use the repeater's offset frequency when I scan for its PL?
this does not work for me :( either on UV-5R5 or UV-5RX3
so did you hit the exit button and PTT at the same time?
So what did that do? Is that a frequency getting traffic?
Cool device!

Any help to fix transmission
NICE! you have 1.25M! I do have it on my UV-5R MK4!
I'll try, but at the beginnig no work.. you must to push (SCAN BUTTON) twice and BINGO!!!
What is this supposed to do?
Funciona para DCS ?
Does this bypass QT on kenwood radios?
Then what? Does a repeater act like I have more range?
My Baofeng UV-5R will not do that, why?
If that channel doesn't work do I keep scanning different channels? I'm having trouble

I am trying to do it on Yaesu FT65-R. Does anyone know if tone scan is even possible on Ft65-r? Thanks in advance😊

No. You can program it to go that low but it won't receive anything, especially airband because all airband is 99% AM and this is FM.

you don't need a "license" to use your radio, stop believing this nonsense
You only need a license to transmit. You can listen all you want. Best to find uncommon channels if you want to talk to other radios
Is that the pro version?
What's that setting for
