  • A video report of a tour on the "Trochita" (the Old Patagonian Express), a 400 km narrow-gauge line (75 cm) between Esquel and Ingeniero Jaboacci in the Argentine Patagonia. Five different steam locomotives are shown; they were built around 1922 by Baldwin and Henschel. All are 2-8-2 oil burners. They are shown on parts of the line that are not normally used nowadays. Still pictures of the same trip are here: www.ona.vu/trochita

    Maintain your rails Argentina. Don’t allow them to be destroyed. No matter what happens, you can still move products and feed people. Hello from the USA.

      Argentina has a wide range of climates and almost every landscape you can imagine, from deserts to tropical rainforests, woods, plains, mountains, rivers, thousands of miles of Antlantic Ocean, from extreme hot in the North to extreme cold in the South. It's very much like the US in the complexity and variety of climate and geography.

      @KochersbergTV  4 года назад

      Dear Gareth. Thank you for your nice comment. Actually the line is not in good condition at all. I went back to the place in 2019 and made another video (ruclips.net/video/er3zE5SP6uc/видео.html). During the shots, the train derailed once and in other places, sufficient sand was covering the track to stop the train. A lot of shoveling had to be done (and it was not coal). Just to add to the problem, a long part of the track around Leleque is blocked by the Mapuche autonomists.

    Fantastic!!!
    Got trains all along the line!
    Started with a mixed freight/passenger double header. Later split in 2 trains: passenger and all cargo!
    ¡MAGNÍFICO!
    First time I see a full freight train running on La Trochita!! Lovelly!
    I'd seen photos of 60s & 70s, even taking motorcars on flat cars.
    Though pity that most takes were choped and only have a few full freight train takes (if you have those full shots and can remake the video would be Great!).
    And the guard vans/cabboses should have been brown for passenger and orange for freight trains, and a the rear of the trains.

      Yes indeed, a wonderful place. To answer your question, of the 400 plus km of the line still in place, only 50 km are in regular use: Esquel to Nahuel Pan and El Maitén to Ingeniero Thomae. As there is only one workshop for the maintenance of the locomotives, the track between Esquel and El Maitén is kept in reasonably good shape and from time to time, trains cover the whole distance. The situation of the Northern section of the line is less clear, but there seems to be an intention to reopen the section Ingenerio Jacobacci to Ojo de Agua (?); for more information, keep an eye on the Tren Patagonia web site.

    Stunning video and landscape....this trip is on the bucket list now. Excuse my ignorance but are those oil burners smoking so heavily due to over fueling at high altitude? Also why do they have not a regular sound (4 chuffs per wheel rev) but this irregular (but very enjoyable) ta-ta-tam ta-ta-tam sound?

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  5 лет назад

      They are oil burners. The problem is that the crew believes that railway enthusiasts want a lot of smoke. The same holds true on some my other videos, notably the Zimbabwe one. So nothing to do with altitude. For the irregular sound, a lack of maintenance unfortunately.

    • @otiselevator7738
      @otiselevator7738 4 года назад

      The valves are not adjusted perfectly, so not a precise choo-choo-choo-choo. Almost impossible to get it right. So, usually one of the four chuffs will be a little louder... which gives the classic four-four musical beat of the steam locomotive. Oil fired locomotives can run perfectly clean; altitude is not a problem. But if a photographer is seen a kind fireman will “makes smoke” for just a short time. A steam locomotive photo with no smoke is weak.

      You are right.
      In 1992 when traveling from Jacobacci to Esquel, Baldwin engine was changed at Cerro Mesa.
      As the fluel of the Baldwin engine to take service was still too cold, the one that just arrived was put next to the other, and through a hose into the tender's fluel, hot air was sent in to warm it up.
      Baldwin engines ran the trains from Jacobacci to El Maiten, and from there to Esquel ran the Henshel.

    Why is there steam coming out of the tender?

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  4 года назад +3

      Heating of the heavy oil in the tender. Otherwise it would be too viscous to be used.

    Forgive my ignorance, - I'm not a 'steam man' - but I still like watching them. Why does one loco have steam exhausting through a pipe on the top of the tender, is it from some kind of 'jacket' to keep the oil warm as it must get pretty cold where they operate. Excellent video with some very evocative views - really enjoyed it.

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  6 лет назад +1

      You got the point: the oil has to be heated otherwise it is too thick to be pumped into the burner.

    I would suggest that Argentine spring for a newer Locomotive for hauling box cars and purchase some passenger cars for these engines and set up a tourist trap!!

    Does the Trochita still haul freight? Or are they like the Cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad where they do charter freights for photos?

    • @KochersbergTV
      @KochersbergTV  3 года назад

      There has not been freight traffic on the Trochita for ages. All trains shown in the video were charters. At the time of writing, there is practically no traffic on the line whatsoever, apart from the short leg (20 km) between Esquel and Nahuel Pan (COVID permitting). I went back to the Trochita in 2019 and it was clear that the track condition has not improved. Some political unrest around Leleque is also making things more complicated. My 2019 video is here : ruclips.net/video/er3zE5SP6uc/видео.html
