Great video! May I know why you put the layer of paper between the compost and the soil? I would imagine you'd want to have the compost and the soil mixed in.

      Hi RA,
First Thank you for the watch, we are glad you liked it! Now on to our methods, we do no-till, which we believe is better for the soil and therefore the plants. Lots of reasons for this but a major one is low, to no weeds and with out competition, our veg and flowers thrive and our backs say "thank you". Every year we add mulch in the form of compost which is weed seed free, slowly over that year, it incorporates it self into the soil. The wind then blows in weed seed from everywhere, so the paper we lay down acts as a temporary weed mat, blocking all light to prevent weed germination, whilst our transplants get established. The paper we use is also pretty thin, so the roots of our crops penetrate without a problem. The paper breaks down over time (1-2 months) and has an added benefit of becoming worm food. We hope that you have a fabulous growing season and if you have any other questions, please ask!

Oh that compost looks so beautiful! Mine looks like mostly wood chips 😒

Oh, no, that is terrible! See if you can find a source that has mostly cow manure. Mine is mostly cow with some rabbit and horse. Wood chips are good but they can rob nitrogen in certain situations. I had a raise bed once do nothing for two years because of too many wood chips in the compost, after they broke down it was fine but what a nightmare. Hope you find that black gold soon! Thanks for watching! Happy growing!

Love this!! Will that fork work in hardpan? My ground is super hard. Miss you guys💞

Yes, it will help as long as your hard-pan is down less than 12 inches. There are longer tine broad forks if it is deeper. Our soil is heavy clay, so we put in some work to get the fork in. In some areas it was almost more than I had, but we got it done. I think if we had tried broad forking in year one, I might not have gotten the forks to sink without some water, but I think the deep mulch of compost along with roots in the ground from last years crops did a lot to help. We love and miss you too! Thanks for watching!
