When this is done in the machinery world the retail customers would not usually notice. The price is set for the 1 reason that the retail customer isn't met to buy. Now if you get the correct sales person (not saying this guy doesn't know anything) but in say.. Alaska the mine specs are very strict as the state requirements for machinery. I know the exact corporation that uses this machine.
Not everyone deals with snow removal. When it comes to moving dirt or gravel, then the difference would be noticeable. Lift capacity and breakout force is very different in these two machines. It mainly depends on the users application.

Having a straightforward salesperson with real time experience and he himself steered you away from the larger unit - definitely a dealership/sales rep I would want to do business with. I’m the furthest thing from brand loyal, got a Case and Deere tractor, Case and Gehl skidsteer’s, Bobcat mini excavator and a Deere backhoe. I find that every brand seems to make some equipment that stands out for them but no one company builds the best of everything. For Dozers above 60k lbs I like Cat, below 60k I like Komatsu. Excavators for pretty much anything over 40k lbs I like Volvo, for compacts I like the older G series Bobcats. Skidsteer’s I like Case. But regardless of brand, as you said, service and parts availability are definitely the most important thing when you own any piece of equipment.
With the 640 youre getting faster hydraulic cycle times and higher hydraulic flow and alot traction breakout so if you want to run a snow blower better with a 640 or if youre using for a construction where faster cycle times will make a difference bassically how i consider the two models is 540 is for like garden centers / homeowners and 640 is for construction use thats why is almost the same but has the better functions for all day productivity and snowplowing youre better off having an old mechanical loader but construction big difference why you think old loaders sit in lots for plowing but dont sit on construction sights anymore functions are too slow now
You’d notice the difference in the two if your moving lots of material thats heavy. They do feel different in that scenario. We don’t plow snow, just move a ton dirt.

Having worked in the oilfield in North Dakota, the best experience I've had with equipment was a KUBOTA. If I were to start my own business, I wouldn't buy anything else.
Did you take a look at the pins and bearings and axels? Where is that 1200lbs at? Is it gonna hold up better in the long run due to heavier duty components?

My guess is municipalities. Meeting a certain number of minimum specs puts them in the running with other manufacturers, and the price represents extra profit for Kubota in a market where 10k here or there does not matter to the deep pocket buyer

Around me these are common nursery machines so for them the 640 is probably good for stability while loading trees but the 540 is probably good for ur average landscape contractor

I Just did some repairs on a BX last year, received some parts that were labeled both made in USA and Japan with different tags, didn't look like it was intentional just sloppy retagging for dealers.
I would imagine the higher hp would be for running attachments and hydraulic hp. My friend ran into that dilemma when buying a mini articulating load. The bigger machine was just set up more for attachments. Algorithm 👍

Hi Stan, JOHN DEERE did the exact same thing in my opinion with the 1025R vs their 2 series which is the same motor with only a slightly wider wheel base and 2 inches higher lift height with the loader arms butbits thousands more?
My neighbor has had a kubota tractor for 10 years it’s been in the shop 1 time for warranty work it’s a nice tractor does everything only thing is the forward and reverse pedal hate it when backing up trying to boxblade tight areas

I think the main thing that separates the two machines is the ability to run different attachments-the 640 has the capability to run your engine speed separate from your drive speed (for a snow blower or mower) when you want full RPM at low speed. As far as I know, the 540 isn’t able to do that 👍
I am unsure if this has been mentioned in previous comments, but in order to be agricultural tax exempt (Ontario, Canada), the machine needs to be higher than 60hp. I am unsure of which equipment types can be included in exemption.

Cat had the 950 in 70 they made the 966 same motor and transmission and hydraulic system of the 950 my father said it was a big old dog that could not get out of it way
so to me it sound alot like the the scenario with the sledge you dont really need all the extra comfort if all you do is drive on smood pavement sure a air ride seat is nice if you work lets say a logyard but unless considering the tiredness of the operator it makes no more money to you and thats just it. Also thats the reason i like and prefer older equipment they are fixeable and they do the same job with the same time just cost alot less
I think a person would really have to know the weight they will be lifting all the time. Maybe the tire floatation would be a big help to some people. I like Kubota stuff too.

With higher HP I can only assume it has a different engine or transmission. Diesel vs. gas could definitely account for a significant amount that price difference. Since everything diesel is more expensive, a combo of different engine and trans would easily add up to the cost. Have gone to the website the main difference besides height and weight are the hydraulics and possibly the tranny. The engine is the same. As a guy who doesn’t use these machines, I have to ask, besides moderate cost for the larger wheels and heavier parts, how much would a beefier hydraulic system (300 psi difference - 11%) and 21% flow rate difference add to the cost.
I bought a Kabota M100GX farm tractor brand new in 2015. It now has almost 200 hours on it. The reason for such low hours is that the transmission has not worked correctly since the day it was brand new and the dealership cannot fix it. I would not have another Kabota on this property if you gave it to me. These things are complete garbage and no one knows how to fix them.
I've owned a bunch of different kubota tractors but the last 8 or so years I bought my first wheel loader a R530 that thing was a tank I dug pounds with it everything I through at it it did then I went to a R540 was alright then I jumped too the R640 all done up with everything was excited when I finally got well let's say it lasted less then the usual 2 years not worth the money I went back to another R540 I have know it's all right does what I need done but the point is the original R530 were tanks i want mine back this new stuff is all garbage these days was waiting for something like this
The 640 has about 20% more HP and the same increase in hydraulic flow ( probably the whole reason for more HP ) . Kubota might have two different models for users needing a bit more flow for stuff like mulchers, Blowers, power rakes/brooms, etc vs users that are just loading with their loader. Kinda surprised that salesmen didn't know that. If three MPH means something to ya for productivity 20% more power on a mulcher or blower sure will.
They prob made the because others do. New New holland has w50 and w80. Each one is similar to kubota, but the w50 has a travel speed of 11.6 mph, and the w80 has optional travel speed of 21.7mph
Looking at the straight specs the 640 weighs about a thousand pounds more and can lift about a thousand more pounds. The 540 Right at 10,000 lb, The 640 is 11500. Biggest difference I can see is the hydraulic flow. This comes into play if you're running implements on the front. As far as pushing and moving material, probably little to no difference.
I guess the biggest difference is lifting capacity I just looked up both models there’s 1100 lbs difference in tipping weight between the 2 so it would depend on your application I guess
I can't help but think that the larger machine wouldn't have more max lift capacity, just due to the larger weight of the machine. As a general rule, manufacturers wouldn't build 2 loaders so close in size though. It's just bad marketing. I'm kind of surprised too that Kubota would allow a dealer to badmouth one of their machines like that.
There are some huge differences including the 1400lb lift capacity "That matters if you need it" But for pushing snow there would be no reason to go up to the 640. They are both going to push snow the same IMO.
If you're handling dirt and aggregate / demo'd concrete you would notice a difference. 8-10K is nothing if you're springing for a new machine. I'd get the larger hp machine.

Kubota is there to make money. If there product isn't good people will go to another company next time. There are alot of people that are interested in owning the bigger one regardless of the fact it isn't the best band for the buck. It has a 6 and therefore is better than a 5. Doesn't matter to a lot of people. Those people also drive Mercedes, BMW and Land Rovers. Polished turds when they can drive a Toyota Sequoia that is cheaper, just as nice luxury wise and way more reliable. Kubota is trying to make money like everyone else. If more people thought about the cost versus the benefits than Kubota would probably not be selling the 6 for very long.
I’ve had a kubota tractor for years and it is absolutely the best tractor I’ve ever used. My friends who own other brands all agree my Kubota is far superior to theirs.
The rap should have stated some of the key points in the bigger machine. Higher flow more lifting capacity. Not well informed if you didn't have any answer for the reasons that machine was built. And there is more to life than snow plowing.

I won't buy Kubota anything. I had a couple Kubota stuff in the past and their is way better made equipment then Kubota. Even there engines are junk compared to some other makes out there.. I know there is a lot of die hard Kubota people and I was one for a long time. But when you start to compare certain other equipment and engines with a open mind Kubota is not the machine or tractor you are led to believe. A Kubota excavator put against another make. the Kubota was a 8,000 lbs machine the other was a 10,000 lbs excavator.. Both digging a trench for natural gas line. The other machine would burn around 18 gallons of fuel in 20 hours. The Kubota would use 18 gallons in 10 hours. The other machine had 2 more feet of reach and the other machine had 1500 pound lifting capacity at 14 feet out.. Compare the two for build quality the Kubota was built way cheaper and in the end the new price of the Kubota was only $7,000 cheaper then the other machine. I have anymore machines I can compare and that is why I won't buy another Kubota anything.. Plus I was told the tory about Kubota in Asian countries and what made them come to Canada/US. There are better made equipment and tractors out there for same moneyer cheaper that are better in the long run
You are correct. I have operated alot of compact equipment. Owned kubota kx040. Had weak slew force, burned alot of fuel , no thumb operating during regen. Sold it purchased John deere 35g and 50g. Equipped with yanmar engines, seamless regen cycles in the 50g and uses half the fuel that kubota 40 used.
My thinking was that Kubota seems great as far as the compact and sub compact but others for larger tractors, other brands. Different types if equipment seemed to vary alot but for the majority I've mostly ran cat and Kubota and had good experiences with both.
There are only 2 bad things I’ve ever heard about Kubota. I’ve personally owned 4 pieces of their equipment and still have 3 of them. 1. Is that Stan says the SVL-75-2 is terrible at plowing snow. I have an SSV-75 that I plow snow with. But haven’t seemed to have any issues with plowing. My guess is it has something to do with the weight distribution of the tracks vs the wheels. 2. Is someone mentioned that the thumb won’t work on the KX-040 during regen and that it also burns fuel 2X faster than other machines. That’s another machine that I’ve wanted to buy but just haven’t yet. I really think that there must be a very specific reason for why Kubota makes the 640 loader. I think there is probably a very specific market for that machine, that gets them more sales by having it.
What is made in Germany any other one isn't made in Japan in all 50 states do you need a CDL license for both of them did everybody forgets the chains the binders

I love my Kubota have the M59 and a 40 had 2250 had l35 love them. Never had any issues

540 is 86k. 640 is 105k. Only difference is hp and transmission. 540 not available with 3 speed transmission

I bought a Kabota M100GX farm tractor brand new in 2015. It now has almost 200 hours on it. The reason for such low hours is that the transmission has not worked correctly since the day it was brand new and the dealership cannot fix it. I would not have another Kabota on this property if you gave it to me. These things are complete garbage and no one knows how to fix them.
I've owned a bunch of different kubota tractors but the last 8 or so years I bought my first wheel loader a R530 that thing was a tank I dug pounds with it everything I through at it it did then I went to a R540 was alright then I jumped too the R640 all done up with everything was excited when I finally got well let's say it lasted less then the usual 2 years not worth the money I went back to another R540 I have know it's all right does what I need done but the point is the original R530 were tanks i want mine back this new stuff is all garbage these days was waiting for something like this
The 640 has about 20% more HP and the same increase in hydraulic flow ( probably the whole reason for more HP ) . Kubota might have two different models for users needing a bit more flow for stuff like mulchers, Blowers, power rakes/brooms, etc vs users that are just loading with their loader. Kinda surprised that salesmen didn't know that. If three MPH means something to ya for productivity 20% more power on a mulcher or blower sure will.
They prob made the because others do. New New holland has w50 and w80. Each one is similar to kubota, but the w50 has a travel speed of 11.6 mph, and the w80 has optional travel speed of 21.7mph
Looking at the straight specs the 640 weighs about a thousand pounds more and can lift about a thousand more pounds. The 540 Right at 10,000 lb, The 640 is 11500. Biggest difference I can see is the hydraulic flow. This comes into play if you're running implements on the front. As far as pushing and moving material, probably little to no difference.
I guess the biggest difference is lifting capacity I just looked up both models there’s 1100 lbs difference in tipping weight between the 2 so it would depend on your application I guess

I can't help but think that the larger machine wouldn't have more max lift capacity, just due to the larger weight of the machine. As a general rule, manufacturers wouldn't build 2 loaders so close in size though. It's just bad marketing.
I'm kind of surprised too that Kubota would allow a dealer to badmouth one of their machines like that.
There are some huge differences including the 1400lb lift capacity "That matters if you need it" But for pushing snow there would be no reason to go up to the 640. They are both going to push snow the same IMO.
Max traction force is listed at 6,541lbs for the R540 and 8,588lbs for the R640. The trick would be setting the machine up to use that difference.
If you're handling dirt and aggregate / demo'd concrete you would notice a difference. 8-10K is nothing if you're springing for a new machine. I'd get the larger hp machine.

You guys to not do land clearing. The 640 probably has better hydraulic power for forestry mulching post hole digging, etc
Great video, Stan. Lots of great info and food for thought as well. If there's really no difference between the 640 and 540 except the 640 is more out of the gate...then the answer would be 540 all day long.

Heres something to know. You need more horse power for hydrostatic drive than you do for gear drive.

Kubota is there to make money. If there product isn't good people will go to another company next time. There are alot of people that are interested in owning the bigger one regardless of the fact it isn't the best band for the buck. It has a 6 and therefore is better than a 5. Doesn't matter to a lot of people. Those people also drive Mercedes, BMW and Land Rovers. Polished turds when they can drive a Toyota Sequoia that is cheaper, just as nice luxury wise and way more reliable. Kubota is trying to make money like everyone else. If more people thought about the cost versus the benefits than Kubota would probably not be selling the 6 for very long.
I’ve had a kubota tractor for years and it is absolutely the best tractor I’ve ever used. My friends who own other brands all agree my Kubota is far superior to theirs.
The rap should have stated some of the key points in the bigger machine. Higher flow more lifting capacity. Not well informed if you didn't have any answer for the reasons that machine was built. And there is more to life than snow plowing.
Completely understand why pay 10000 dollars more for a machine that is 1300 pounds heavier only 14 more HP. No net performance advantage. I’m with you it makes no sense from a business and value for the dollar to go with the slightly bigger one

I won't buy Kubota anything. I had a couple Kubota stuff in the past and their is way better made equipment then Kubota. Even there engines are junk compared to some other makes out there.. I know there is a lot of die hard Kubota people and I was one for a long time. But when you start to compare certain other equipment and engines with a open mind Kubota is not the machine or tractor you are led to believe. A Kubota excavator put against another make. the Kubota was a 8,000 lbs machine the other was a 10,000 lbs excavator.. Both digging a trench for natural gas line. The other machine would burn around 18 gallons of fuel in 20 hours. The Kubota would use 18 gallons in 10 hours. The other machine had 2 more feet of reach and the other machine had 1500 pound lifting capacity at 14 feet out.. Compare the two for build quality the Kubota was built way cheaper and in the end the new price of the Kubota was only $7,000 cheaper then the other machine. I have anymore machines I can compare and that is why I won't buy another Kubota anything.. Plus I was told the tory about Kubota in Asian countries and what made them come to Canada/US. There are better made equipment and tractors out there for same moneyer cheaper that are better in the long run
You are correct. I have operated alot of compact equipment. Owned kubota kx040. Had weak slew force, burned alot of fuel , no thumb operating during regen. Sold it purchased John deere 35g and 50g. Equipped with yanmar engines, seamless regen cycles in the 50g and uses half the fuel that kubota 40 used.
I ive run two of thier zero turns and I think they mow better then JD.
My thinking was that Kubota seems great as far as the compact and sub compact but others for larger tractors, other brands. Different types if equipment seemed to vary alot but for the majority I've mostly ran cat and Kubota and had good experiences with both.
There are only 2 bad things I’ve ever heard about Kubota. I’ve personally owned 4 pieces of their equipment and still have 3 of them.
1. Is that Stan says the SVL-75-2 is terrible at plowing snow. I have an SSV-75 that I plow snow with. But haven’t seemed to have any issues with plowing. My guess is it has something to do with the weight distribution of the tracks vs the wheels.
2. Is someone mentioned that the thumb won’t work on the KX-040 during regen and that it also burns fuel 2X faster than other machines. That’s another machine that I’ve wanted to buy but just haven’t yet.
I really think that there must be a very specific reason for why Kubota makes the 640 loader. I think there is probably a very specific market for that machine, that gets them more sales by having it.

You could buy the 540 and put a few bucks into it and gain more then just an extra 12hp if you really need it.
I’ve personally put over 500 hours on a 640 kubota. And it was incredibly underpowered and broke down 3 fuckin times.
