I dream of that car, maybe someday I can buy my Nissan Versa. I travel by bus or walk long distances to my work especially with this pandemic. I am from Honduras
I too was like you, i am from Mexico. I also rode the bus and would dream about the cars I could buy. I am happy that now I do have my versa, but first I got an old 1998 Neon. with luck and saving money, i was able to sell the Neon and buy my versa. it is a hatchback color blue. I love it and hopefully you buy yours soon! que dios te bendiga, saludos desde Cd. Juarez, Mexico.
review seemed accurate. comfortable, nice handling, quiet with decent suspension, budget sedan with an attractive interior. while time to 60 is slow, this car has a perfectly adequate short burst. Must be gently handled imo. if u're rough on a car need to buy something a little stouter.
me too, mine's a 2012 hatchback. I was so happy when I got it three years ago. I upgraded from a 98 neon and it felt like I upgraded to a brand new car even though it was already 7 years old. It's been super reliable and starts right up every time in the hot and cold.
I rented one and well here is my take. Comfortable front seats 💺, great mpgs, ergonomics, and good legroom. Too much plastic, narrow body with terrible rear seats, terrible ride due to smallish tires, and no power. Also as a note, you will have remove the entire manifold to access the spark plugs.
I was highly impressed with this car on performance and handling. It felt more to the road like a honda accord and the steering much like the toyota corolla. And the gas mileage was awesome.
We have a 2009 versa Hatchback which has been very dependable & yesterday just bought a new 2012 Versa SV sedan. These are a heck of a deal for a new car & the 2012 sedan looks pretty sharp. I checked out Hyundai Accent & it's more expensive & has a rougher ride than the Versa. The backseat is roomy enough for our 2 6ft tall sons to ride back there without any complaints, plenty of leg room.
I rented the Versa hatchback during a 5 day vacation in Florida. HITS: Smooth Ride, roomy, soft arm rests, mushy comfy seats, good visibility, 6 cup holders, responsive, but longish steering. MISSES: Clunky AT shifter, clunky brake pedal, hard square plastic dash, no vanity mirror for driver, odd to park, new interior smell is overwhelming, ONLY 230 miles to the tank for mixed city and highway driving. Versa is okay, but maybe not the best.
After 4 months I had forgotten what I had written. A couple of things. The 2009 model Versa hatchback DID have the light beige color. Nissan's website should tell you what color interiors are available. I have sat in one, and I find them very comfortable if basic, which is to be expected, and I didn't get that hung up about it not having a center console, since you can always buy those second hand. Why not visit the dealer & drive one, & if you buy one ask the salesman to send me commission! lol
Actually most cars have a lot of plastic inside. The other day I went for a ride in my Dad's Camry & it was pretty much all plastic inside also & that car costs a lot more too.
I have a 2016 SL in the same color as the one in this vid. It’s an overall reliable car, but I prefer the 2012 Hatchback I had before. It just felt more responsive and powerful.
The thing I'd be more concerned about, rather than why the dash is plastic, is whether the thing would last long enough to pay for it. I've never had a Nissan, but I have heard that they were less reliable than Honda and Toyota. May or may not be true, but that would be something I would look out for, especially in a cheaper car.
Toyota 4A-GE (MR2 & Corolla GTS) - About 28 years old, Twin Cam 1.6 l4. 112hp and 97 lb- ft This 2012 Nissan Versa - Brand new, Twin Cam 1.6 l4. 109 hp 107 lb-ft I know the Toyotas were considered more of sports cars and they were considered powerful for 1.6 engines back then, but really almost 30 years apart and this is the best they can come up with? Sorry but that's just pathetic on Nissan's part.
I am pretty sure this car would be at least a second faster to 60 with the manual transmission...It is made in Aguascalientes, Mexico and the one they sell here has a 4speed auto...nissan didn't think us Mexicans would be very fond of the CVT or maybe just our orography doesn't help a small engined CVT car...
I'm at the opposite end of the mileage spectrum. My 2012 hatchback, with 4-speed automatic transmission, that I bought new in 2012, only has 2,917 miles on it.
I had a 1981 200sx, It was my very first car. I bought it used years ago with 59,000 miles on it. The car itself was 13 years old when I got ride of it and I owned it for 8 years. At the end of those 8 years the odometer read 218,000 miles! The engine still had a lot of life left in it but it was the rest of the car that was shot. It had the original clutch too! Although it would slip if you got on it to hard. I babied that clutch for a long time and I think any other car's clutch would have failed much sooner. Bottom line is Nissan has been making incredibly reliable cars for years! 218,000 miles from a car built in 1981 was unheard of in that era. That car was also fuel injected and had two spark plugs per cylinder. Right up to adout 160,000 miles when you started it the engine it would turn on instantly. I don't think the starter made a complete revolution. You should see the new 2020 and 2021 Versa. Sporty nice looking little cars! They are still using multi port fuel injected engines instead of direct injection which are having high rates of fuel system clogging and engine carbon buildup problems. Those old MPFI engines mated to a manual transmission should give years of trouble free service!
This Car Isn't Meant To Be Sporty Or Luxurious , But It's Faster Than The Honda Fit , Ford Fiesta , And Mazda 2 With Automatic . The Versa Gets Better Mpg , Very Spacious And Cheap . What You Buy Is What You Get . But The Honda Fit Does Look Better .
@haversman You know what I mean? I mean if this were a $36K car, and they had leather seats in it, then I'd gripe at the lack of wood or leather on the dash & door. But this is a Versa, and you only have to look at I don't know, a Jeep, which is more expensive, to find a worse black plastic interior than what they were able to design for this Versa. I think they showed that a cheap car doesn't have to look cheap. It's gotta be something more than just the plastic people are objecting to!
The Versa sedan is for people looking for a small family car with lots of interior room & a plush ride and great fuel economy. If you are looking for a low slung, fast & powerful car that grips the road like a Ferrari then this is NOT your car. That being said, the Versa still outsells ALL other sub compact cars by a large margin, outsells Hyundai Accent by almost double & outsells Toyota Yaris by almost quadruple.
@haversman Soft touch "material". That "material" is PLASTIC. So again, I guess I don't understand what the problem is. Are you saying a dashboard needs to be soft? If so, why? when you've got airbags to protect you?
THANK YOU! Somebody with common sense! My 2004 Dodge Durango was just over $12,000, but it's way bigger, more powerful, better featured and more useful than this Versa! My Durango is even faster than this car! (0 to 60mph for '04 with Hemi V8 in 7.8 seconds/ 8.1 with AWD)
@lrossi888 your right about the price difference but im willing to pay that price for a better car. Also design is subjective I personally love the design. Just because Kia had a bad reputation doesn't mean they are bad. my mom has a 2007 kia sportage with almost 80,000 miles and she has never had a single problem with it. Kia rated #1 in brand loyalty.
A couple comments. 1) Aren't ALL cars plastic? There's certainly plastic in my 14 yr old Toyota. Not sure why that's a big deal. In the time I would drive from home to either the grocery store or - when I had a job - work and back I wasn't feeling on the dash! So, as long as it looks decent plastic doesn't bother me. 2nd, I wonder why they made the sedan look so much like the Hyundai Elantra?
Well I like what I see. I drive six miles round trip to work. I do not have to impress anyone. I have a better back sit than my 2002 jetta. No one is going to call me sexy, but I will laugh all the way to the bank. My mechanic recommended it highly and I am jet to be disappointed by a nissan. My exterra never gave me any problems. So if you want to pay 4 or 5K more for the same thing in a different packet good luck.
I'll never understand why cheap cars have to be designed to look cheap. Should make for a good rental car however because I doubt anyone would actually choose to buy one of these.
Really? I looked at used cars and all the sub-compacts on the market. The best one of the group was the Hyundai Accent but it starts around $4k more and the value of a Hyundai CRASHES after you buy it. People still think Hyundais are disposable. (I do own a 2001 Accent that I paid next to nothing for three years ago, $1300.) The Ford Fiesta was nice enough for $3k more but the interior room was pitiful for my teenage kids and the radio controls were simply absurd. We got one for $11,770.
anyone who buys a sub compact car is getting ripped off in my opinion. u called buy a used loaded compact car thats about a couple years old for the same price
The only car in its class that's has less hp and torque is the Fiat 500; and it doesn't compete with the Versa. The Versa is not designed for high performance; I can image it's a good first car.
I'm very impressed by the 38 inches of legroom in the back of the Versa sedan, but that damn thing is slow! i do wanna drive the 5 speed though. Get the S model; interior quality won't get better in any trim, only metallic trim that paint will come off of. also ac is standard. not too horrible for the cheapest car in america..ok it's very slow and cheap.. but whatever
@haversman Well, I don't know, I still don't see anything wrong - aesthetics-wise - with the interior of this Nissan Versa. It's plastic, but they're ALL plastic in just about every car under $20,000. It's a commuter car. So again, explain to me what the problem really is?
People are really stupid. For the cheapest car sold in America do you expect material quality you would find in a$20k car, NO! The automaker wouldn't make any money on the midsized car if the Versa has nice materials, cause most would buy the cheaper $10k car if it had the nicest materials. This is a basic commuter car for a teen, or older person with basic car necessity's.
My Hatchback S has the 1.8 122hp and 6sp manual respectable for the cheapest car with A/C! on the market. Check others MSRP then add their A/C plus+ package Thanks MotorWeek and Maryland PBS I love seeing 75&80 Drag strip with the uphill finish line. Mostly because I went to elementary school across the street in the late 70's
@lrossi888 Just because a magazine didn't call it dangerously slow doesn't mean that isn't the case. My 1998 S-10 2.2L 4 Cyl which was a piece of crap, was quicker than this versa and was dangerously slow especially when merging into the freeway in San Francisco on a short on ramp.
I love how John emphasizes the word PLASTIC when he says "plastic hubcaps". As if they make aluminum ones in this decade? I think John i still stuck in the 1980's when aluminum hubcaps were actually available. All kidding aside, he's right. This car does have the illusion of having a lot of PLASTIC inside. In all actuality it doesn't have any more plastic inside than any other car in this class. It's just cheaper looking plastic in this car.
@lrossi888 The 2012 kia rio isnt a piece a shit! It has more hp then the versa(138 hp), has better fuel economy(40 mpg hw), looks a million times better than this!! google 2012 kia rio you will be surprised. also the rio has a better interior!!
this car is great for the teenager or college student; great first time driver its all about what your needs are. I would go nissan before Hyundai though
I dream of that car, maybe someday I can buy my Nissan Versa. I travel by bus or walk long distances to my work especially with this pandemic. I am from Honduras
Hope things get better for you brother
I too was like you, i am from Mexico. I also rode the bus and would dream about the cars I could buy. among its class, the most comfortable...the roominess and quietness is superb
The older one pre 2012 is made much better and way more reliable without the terrible cvt transmission.
I swear he always makes me laugh when he says something about an engine being underpowered .
review seemed accurate. comfortable, nice handling, quiet with decent suspension, budget sedan with an attractive interior. while time to 60 is slow, this car has a perfectly adequate short burst. Must be gently handled imo. if u're rough on a car need to buy something a little stouter.
it looks like it has great suspension though, i like the way it bounces and makes it look...idk...floaty lol
I love my Versa hatchback! :)
me too, mine's a 2012 hatchback. I was so happy when I got it three years ago. I upgraded from a 98 neon and it felt like I upgraded to a brand new car even though it was already 7 years old. It's been super reliable and starts right up every time in the hot and cold.
@@jefemuga416 Is the A/C good or just so-so?
I rented one and well here is my take. Comfortable front seats 💺, great mpgs, ergonomics, and good legroom. Too much plastic, narrow body with terrible rear seats, terrible ride due to smallish tires, and no power. Also as a note, you will have remove the entire manifold to access the spark plugs.
The closest the US will ever get to a Renault Megane.
I think I prefer the Toyota Yaris or Chevrolet Sonic for what you get, but this is still pretty nice..
I was highly impressed with this car on performance and handling. It felt more to the road like a honda accord and the steering much like the toyota corolla. And the gas mileage was awesome.

You'd be crazy to pick a Versa over a Mazda2 or Ford Fiesta unless you absolutely needed the extra rear seat room.
We have a 2009 versa Hatchback which has been very dependable & yesterday just bought a new 2012 Versa SV sedan. These are a heck of a deal for a new car & the 2012 sedan looks pretty sharp. traded my 2000 Subaru Forester in on my 2011 versa hatchback. versa much more reliable. love it 😉
do you live where it snows? i am thinking about getting one but i am in Michigan
Finally, a car that is worse than the Plymouth Neon! Good job Nissan! :-D
I rented the Versa hatchback during a 5 day vacation in Florida.

Great little car. I'll stick with Nissan if I'm going sub-compact, as they've been building the best cars in that class for decades.

I think to make this car cooler, they should have called it Tiida or Almera! I think it sound so much cooler than being called Versa!
"The power is low but at least fuel consumption is high" :D
imy for 38MPG hwy it should have at least 100lbs/ft more
Toyota 4A-GE (MR2 & Corolla GTS) - About 28 years old, Twin Cam 1.6 l4. 112hp and 97 lb- ft

Why does video look like it was made in 1980?
My 2012 has 246,000 miles😉
any issues? is it a cvt?
I'm at the opposite end of the mileage spectrum. My 2012 hatchback, with 4-speed automatic transmission, that I bought new in 2012, only has 2,917 miles on it.
Update: it made it to 280,700 miles, scrapped it, engine blew finally.
Sounds like it served you well.

Nothing in this price segment is that stylish, well appointed, or sporty. Keep in mind this is the least expensive new car on the market
yeah thats what I want. A versa straight out of college.
How's about the hatchback different cvt trans?
@haversman You know what I mean? I mean if this were a $36K car, and they had leather seats in it, then I'd gripe at the lack of wood or leather on the dash & door. Had one for a rental car. I'd say, good for short distances only and then there is the reliability point. Not good.
The Versa sedan is for people looking for a small family car with lots of interior room & a plush ride and great fuel economy. How is it holding up? How is the fuel economy? Any problems? It was a 4 year old car, right?
Why's that?
I can park my hatchback damn near anywhere.
Why do they keep putting road tests of the BAD Versa SV! I want some of the 1.8 SL!
I wanted one of these, but never got one 🤷🏼♀️
I got one of these but never wanted one.
@lrossi888 your right about the price difference but im willing to pay that price for a better car. Also design is subjective I personally love the design. I rode in a 2015 or so several years ago. Noisy, cheap plastic junk. You definitely get what you pay for
Davis didnt like the car either just like all the other reviewers.

Yeah, thats the price for better performance, bigger size and more versatility.
I'd rather a used civic (06+) over this!
Well I like what I see. I drive six miles round trip to work. I do not have to impress anyone. I have a better back sit than my 2002 jetta. the fuel economy on that blows the sentra gets 33 !
and its get an amazing 14mpg!

I like, but I still think the first generation looks better.
@StangBang35 yeah why buy a new car for $10k when you can buy a used car full of problems for $15k
And you get what, 17 MPG highway on a GOOD day?
needs a turbo like the juke LOL
People are really stupid. For the cheapest car sold in America do you expect material quality you would find in a$20k car, NO! I love seeing 75&80 Drag strip with the uphill finish line. Mostly because I went to elementary school across the street in the late 70's
idk the 07-11 versa body style is just more appealing to the eye. this 2012 model just look like poo
Yes, that was my point.
Yeah it's cheap and you get what you paid for. Cheap in cheap out.
That is only because so many nut cases drive there. People just need to learn to chill out.
No, cause you'll pay more, itll last about the same, and the Versa gets better MPG. So no.
I bought it last year
I would rather buy the new Kia Rio over this!
I love how John emphasizes the word PLASTIC when he says "plastic hubcaps". As if they make aluminum ones in this decade? this is very roomy car just like the renault
@theComedyDylan Id rather buy this one then the old gen
i ment can
@lrossi888 The 2012 kia rio isnt a piece a shit! It has more hp then the versa(138 hp), has better fuel economy(40 mpg hw), looks a million times better than this!! google 2012 kia rio you will be surprised. also the rio has a better interior!!
My 02 1.8t passat (0 - 60 in 7.9 seconds.) what the fuck is the other 4 cylinders doing?
Talk about a TOTALLY different car about double the price, and a turbo! Yeah, BIG surprise. How is the reliability?
You'll be better off with a 2 year old Honda Civic. Real talk, yo. ;)
That is one ugly, dangerously slow car
Junk
Who ever is considering this car look at USED CARS!!!
Wow, this car is slower than Chevy Cavalier. I really hate Nissan Versa. Buying a used BMW are better
disagree respectively this car will get twice the MPG and much easier to maintain that your underpowered heavy BMW.
Sean s I do agree that those car will give you great mpg and lower maintenance. But if you care about the mpg. I would go with Hyundai
this car is great for the teenager or college student; great first time driver its all about what your needs are. I would go nissan before Hyundai though
Yeah that BMW will cost a lot more to repair and probably on insurance as well. These cars are nowhere near the same class.
ugly car ugly cheap interior...
