- Jaffa Gate is one of the seven main gates of the Old City of Jerusalem. Located on the western side of the city, it has historically served as a key entrance for travelers arriving from Jaffa. The gate was originally constructed in 1538 during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, as part of his rebuilding of the city's walls. It features an L-shaped entryway designed to defend against attackers, with its outer gate facing Jaffa Road.
The name "Jaffa Gate" is linked to the port city of Jaffa, which served as the gateway for pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem. The Arabic name "Bab el-Khalil" translates to "Gate of the Friend," referring to the biblical figure Abraham. In medieval times, the gate was known as "Bab Mihrab Dawud" (Gate of David’s Chamber), associated with the biblical King David.
In 1898, a breach was created in the wall near the gate to allow the German Emperor Wilhelm II to enter Jerusalem during his visit. This breach, alongside a ramp, allowed vehicles to access the city, and it has since become a key entry point for modern traffic. The area around Jaffa Gate is marked by various historical structures, including the Tower of David, which is an ancient citadel near the gate.
Jaffa Gate has been central in various historical events. In 1917, during World War I, British forces entered Jerusalem through Jaffa Gate. The British later removed a row of houses built against the city's walls to preserve the city's historic vistas.
Jaffa Gate's location within the Old City is significant, serving as a gateway to the Christian, Muslim, and Armenian Quarters. The gate leads into a small square, surrounded by shops and a tourist information office, with entrances to the various quarters of the Old City. Today, the gate is a key entry point for both pedestrians and vehicles.
The Jaffa Gate area has undergone renovations in recent years, including the creation of a plaza and the relocation of a major road to connect the gate with the Mamilla shopping mall. It remains one of Jerusalem's most iconic and historically significant locations, representing a blend of ancient tradition and modern development.
Beneath the elevated road columns near Jaffa Gate, significant Byzantine-era archaeological findings can be discovered. Visitors walking down from the Zion Square along the promenade towards Jaffa Gate will reach an enormous underground space beneath the road. The area feels like a hidden, cool, peaceful world, contrasting sharply with the bustling road above. After adjusting to the partial darkness, the remains of a Byzantine public bathhouse become visible, complete with its heating system (hypocaust), warm rooms (caldarium), restrooms, water cisterns, and water conduits. The bathhouse, located outside the Byzantine city wall (about 20 meters south of today’s Ottoman Jaffa Gate), drew water from an aqueduct whose remains were found on Mamilla Street. The aqueduct connected the Herodian Mamilla Pool (today in Independence Park) with the 'Hezekiah's Pool'. The bathhouse was part of a Byzantine district developed to meet the needs of the growing Christian pilgrimage to Jerusalem, beginning with Helena’s visit in 326 CE. Her journey led to the establishment of significant Christian sites, including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 335 CE.
