There’s definitely some plays were you notice hes 5’10 170 but he is far from being a defensive liability. He is certainly a twisty, turny skater. It may look impressive, when he's on the outside of the defenders, but very rarely does he get by an experienced NHL defenseman. It's hard to truly evaluate Hutson's defensive potential, as the 2024-2025 Canadiens are a defensive blackhole. That said, compared to the team's other defensemen he's doing quite well. Guhle is the only one that has better defensive metrics. Hutson will certainly benefit from a partner with size to be a net-front presence, but there's more to defense than that. He's good at killing plays before a net-front presence is required.

the moontreal system is awful. He's not the best but honestly the only one clearly better defensively on tha team is guhle. Hutson has a great stick and follow his guy well. sometimes he gets beaten by size but that's rare. He makes a few turnover, but that's normal because he always has the puck and he's an offensive d (still better than matheson last year) what I love about him is his energy, his desire to correct every mistakes he does. he plays with intensity.

Yes he is good at offense, but he is horrific at defense, which is probably not good for a DEFENSEman.

Definitely reminds me of Makar when he first entered the league. Likely to get pushed around like Hughes in the playoffs due to his size though. Good thing he'll likely never be put in that position.

On maybe the worst team in the league… 20 out of 22 players on Montreal have a negative +/-, the best player having +1, and the worst -14.
+/- is a meaningless stat without context. I’m shocked people still use it as an indication of individual defensive ability. It’s only really valuable as a comparison tool between players on the same team (and even then it can’t account for easier/harder deployment).
Hutson’s been entirely average defensively, which is probably better than most would have expected before this season.

he's an offensive d-man who always had the puck. turnover will happen. he's a rookie, it will happen. He just need the find a balance and the right time. Still he does less turnover than matheson and is the 2nd least awful defensive defensement on the team right now (only guhle is better defensively, the rest is pretty bad and the system doesn't help)
