"What is Istaria?" is a question that plagues me to no end whenever I upload a screenshot or make a new video. So now, I decided to give the question the screentime it deserves.

This was wonderfully done! Istaria is one of my favorite games of all time, I think you described and explained it very well and concisely. Thanks for putting out a video like this for all the potential new players.

I listened to the old stories of what ista was planned to beand how much potential it had a launch from one of the original devs, but just how terribly it failed due to the bad start, bugs, and business practices. It's depressing, really - if the start wasn't so bad Istaria could have rivaled WoW in the ability to keep up with the times.

Yea, there was going to be a lot of differences between what was released and what was talked about. I honestly think most of the problems were technical in nature. The game never ran well and once the servers merged it lost a lot of support in terms of in game events. After that it started going really downhill with management and it's only been until this past year that it's been picking up.
I honestly wish it was possible to rebuild the game.

Yeah, the technical problems really killed it and weaned out the original population. Events going away also probably drove out players, too - I really wish big events were still active...
I wish it was possible to rebuild the game, too. Last year or earlier this year the devs said they were considering a kickstarter for either a new game or to upgrade Istaria's current engine, but they said it requires such careful planning and it's such a hit-or-miss chance that they don't want to mess it up.
+Fire97Dragon With all the tools in this day and age it would be easier then ever for a group with talent to help get the game on its feet. I do hope they are still considering a kickstarter and possibly more people on the team if they get the funds.
+Fire97Dragon Ive been spreading the word of istaria daily in lore books of other games, Since the pay to win is turning them off they like istaria alot more and want to play it.

Thanks, very helpful. A little difficult to understand in a few places because of how fast you're talking but not bad. I stumbled across this game in a big list of MMOs and the class system hooked me. I haven't played it yet but you answered a lot of my questions.
Great review and coverage of Istaria. Definitely not a game for everyone. I cautiously recommend it to those seeking a unique, old school mmorpg experience and are tired of overabundance of shallos, cash grabby f2p games currently on the market.

So here are some questions. I've considered giving this game a try but two things i really have to know about. 1. Does it have dungeons? By dungeons I don't mean instance. I mean areas like caves, catacombs, castles, towers, ect which are maze like with monsters and such where you can get lost. Open world is totally fine. 2. This game used to have a focus on live events where monsters would attack towns and castles and such. Do the devs still do these on ocassion?
1. Yeah, sort of. Istaria's dungeons aren't classic dungeons but there *are* areas you teleport into as a one-way trip. You can leave at any time by recalling and the monsters do constantly respawn, but it's a secluded area with monsters and an end boss. There's 3 in the lvl 20-40 area and 2 for lvl 100 and I believe the devs are working on more.
2. Yeah, though not as huge as in the past. In the past, there would be updates where entire towns would fall, but with how small the team is now, they prefer to work on content that's enjoyable/repeatable. However, we do have some devs that go in as event GMs and spawn monsters on top of cities and players, calling for retaliation. There was also a time where they would post events on the forums prior and follow a storyline, though that has ceased lately in favor of larger events. Right now, there's a winter event going on called Hours of Frost and it's probably the first event in years to actually have new stuff on the servers.
Most of what you would see, though, are random bosses being spawned or the GMs dressing up as bosses and fighting people.

Okay. I do have a few more small questions. 1.Is grouping important at points in the game? Would you guys say you average at least 50 ppl on the servers? Again thanks for the info. I think with this youtube post and these questions, ppl should have a good idea of what you get with this game.
1 - Certainly. The end-game items called epic weapons need you to kill epic bosses which, at the absolute minimum, need 3 dragons, but that's with pro players. Normally you need 5-6 DPS-people and 1 or 2 healers to take one of the epics down with more always being welcome. During normal gameplay, the undead enemies are pretty tough and even my max-level dragon and high-rating sslik have problems fighting them, especially in swarms.
2 - The biggest server averages 50/60 people most days but the smaller one is only about 20ish. The latter is also the RP server and my server and it gets rough trying to do end-game content sometimes.

But there is a flaw about istaria and that flaw is that I gotta pay for a membership to level up beyond 15 which is frustrating for people who can't pay (like me)
But the game is magnificent for an old game, honestly i bet it's older than gta 5 (idk, just guessing)
I remember playing this game so long ago, my First MMO under the name Horizons. But after i left i heard from a lot of old friends it went into hard times, but i guess its because people just dident want to do with the whole grind thing anymore. Well, WoW is full of grind, and its apparently still doing more than well, ......sorry, just a little bitter because i remember the good times i had on the MMO with my old friends and guild and was really fun...then...well, the Goliath that is Bliz happened...
That didn't kill this game. They need(ed) someone on staff that helps them give polish to the game. Also, it apparently went through 3 or more owners. Virtrium developed it, allowed someone else to publish and own it and did I don't know what. Then it changed hands until now it again belongs to Virtrium and they are very slowly updating it. Perhaps they have a staff of two or three, I dunno, but the website looks like it was created in 1998 or something, and the graphics are still ancient by video game standards. However there are rumors that they are in the process of converting it to the Unreal Engine which will drastically (I hope) improve the graphics. I also hope they work on the GUI since it doesn't look the least bit intuitive. It should absolutely be as simple (in terms of the UI) as they can possibly make it without sacrificing the game's complexity and immersion.
Btw, what I've said is backed up by the results of the release of WoW Classic. The graphics for vanilla are still better than this game in its current state, but they doubled their subs by releasing the game along for play with a current subscription for retail wow. Now you can either play the original or play it in its current state. Classic was pretty grindy, maybe more grindy than this game, idk yet. And I resubbed for Classic myself. The current game is both too complex and too easy. Not an easy feat to accomplish.
Really good job here. My tutorial for crafting looks noobish now XD. Gonna mention this one in my description though. This is gonna be really handy for newbies and seriously the devs would be stupit not to put this on their Istaria page XD.

Hey Racktor. I am planning on making a second to this video for old and new players about certain abilities and quests people may not know about and answer some common questions. It will be in depths and I'll refer to your video here for brief information on the entire game. I'll most likely make two videos, one for dragons and the other for bipeds. Do you still get bonuses to you stats when you craft? Like crafting spellshards and spells increases intelligence or blacksmithing increases strength.

I have a question, is adventure level and crafting level different/separate than base level? Could I become an adult dragon on a free account? I mostly just want to be able to fly if I'm going be a dragon. I think I mostly just want to use it to Role-Play as a dragon. Please love me.
Adventure level and crafting level are separate. So you can be a level 100 adventure dragon but only have 1 crafting level. However, you need specific crafting/adventure levels to be an adult.
That being said, you can't really get to adult on the free account because it caps you at 15 and you need lvl 30 adventure / 30 craft absolute minimum to fly. However, you can pay for 1 month and become adult during that time, then play for free after. You just can't keep leveling up or take any quests, but you'll keep your adult dragon and be able to fly.

You need to pay $10/month to play the game in general past lvl 15; if you stop paying, as long as you have only 1 active character, you can still play them, but you can't level up or do quests

corinne papevalley From lvl 0 to 15 you can play for free, but above that you need to pay if you want to keep progressing. At any time you can "pause", so to speak, though. That make a bit more sense?

+Hellenia they updated the free to play ^^ humans still forever free, Other biped races are limited to level 10 Schools all can be played over and over again to level 10 XD dragons get a max level of 15. so yeah new Free to play ^^

Nah, you can start at lvl 30 adventure. 50 is just recommended because that is the around the minimum level of the enemies you will be facing. Plus, at level 50 adventure as a hatchling you can get some pretty good scales that last you to lvl 80 from a quest. Overall, though, it's just optional

Try doing a full scan? In the launcher under "troubleshooting", check "Full Scan". If that fails, try "Patch to Blight" instead to see if the newer client is better.
It still says "The application go unhandled and will be closed" :(

+Chakee mouse I dont really know then, honestly. In troubleshooting, check "Output Support Logs" or something. Try to log in and once it crashes, go to your istaria logs folder (istaria/logs) and copy everything from it into a zip file. Send it into support.istaria.com and explain the situation - a dev should get back to you shortly to try to solve the problem.

is there anything new in the game? I've left about two years ago and I'm just curious if anyone is still working on it.
Oh certainly! the biggest thing is probably the return of the developer raids. you can now edit your characters appearance after creation, all 3 sit animations for dragons are in game, dragons have 2 new markings and about 9-12 new colors. theres sleep animations for afk'ing. a new t6 questline for allies (friendly mobs that follow you) that give abilities was rather recently released.... and the game is gonna move to unreal engine 4. Thats what I get off the top of my head, at least
Do you know how long it will be until the Unreal Engine update? I remember hearing end of this year, but I can't find any info on it, and it's getting pretty close to the end of the year.
***** The unreal engine update was announced last year near the end of the year, but I don't think they actually gave any ETA. I know they're still working on it since the devs mention it now and then, but with such a tiny team, I wouldn't be surprised if it took a while.

@@Fire97Dragon they also need to stop calling servers "shards." If they want immersion they should call them worlds or something. Plus someone needs to write a well crafted novel that can get new players into the lore of the game.

A place where freaks and wierdos who have an unhealthy fetish for dragons go. :) Seriously though this game is mostly dragons who are free to play dragon hatchlings, altoholic dragon players and leetist I can solo epic mobs players. Sadly I'm the latter and just ran out of content. Too afraid to roll a bi-ped toon cause the game is on life support and feels like it's about to have it's lights turned off any minute. This game is a reminder of the mmorph phenomenon that is a dying breed and is being replaced by cartoony fps games and bad iPhone games. Oh Istaria, you were so beautiful in your hayday, now you're just like that old person that has bad dyed hair puts makeup on like a clown. Just sad.
