The Atari 2600 version sure brings back some memories.I can't believe how addictive this game was (and still is).Its seems literally every machine out there had its own version apparently.
There were a lot of versions that I couldn't add. This video was made before I had an unlimited time for My videos. They exist but I couldn't add them due to a 15 minute time limit so I didn't add them. But indeed they do exist.
Awesome!!! Thanks for doing these... I could watch them over and over. Love to examine all the little differences in the classic versions of these games.
+Gaming History Source I'm not surprised about the C64 because its graphics/text modes and sprites are just about ideally suited for such a game. In fact, I think the C64 port of _Centipede_ could and should have been better! On the other hand, I am surprised at how well _Stunt Car Racer_ plays on the C64, since none of its usual graphical strengths could be used.
I love these series that you do. Glad I found and subbed. Centipede/Millipede are some of my favorites and even with the poor graphics of the 2600, its still a blast to play today :)
I know the Colecovision and 5200 had a trackball. That makes a hugh difference in gameplay. Any version that has a trackball option has an advantage over those who don't.
I noticed the GBA version is the Centipede/Breakout/Warlords and not the more accurate Atari Anniversary Advance version. There's also an Atarisoft DOS version that is different from the IBM version of Centipede shown in the video.
@atarileaf :) I got that version when I was about 9 years old for Christmas & loved every minute of it. The game play was great for it's time all though the graphics were drab. But it still brings back fond memories. Thanks for subscribing & for commenting. I'm really glad that You guys enjoy these videos. still have more lined up & hopefully I'll be completing them soon.
Thanks for this history lesson, well done. Apple II version: lame, like all Atarisoft products for the Apple seem to be. Atari 7800 version: looks pretty solid, wish I had bought it when it came out. IBM PC-Booter version: running a little too fast here, maybe?
@PCGamer77 it was pretty hard to get the speed down on this one without a sound glitch. It was pretty annoying. I Managed to get a slight balance on it but yes ! it was a bit too fast.

People gave the Atari 5200 a lot of grief in these reviews but in the 80's their arcade ports routinely outscored all of the systems in Electronic Arts reviews. For centipede you could buy a track ball. People complained about the controllers but if you owned one you figured it out. Also later on some 3rd party vendors sold some easier to use Joysticks.
I'm one of the few that prefer using a joystick versus the trak-ball, even though the 5200 version with it's built like a tank trak-ball is fun. I just never mastered that specific controller and could always do way better with the joystick instead. That's not to say when I finally complete my MAME cab I'm not installing a trak-ball because I certainly will. Would love to get one of the ones that are illuminated from within.
wow..i had this on my atari 65 xe and loved it when i could get it to load although i seem to remember it looking more like the 5200 version shown here! i asked for a computer christmas 87(?) and that is what i got :)
@sandmanxo I actually had the track ball for the Atari 2600 & it worked great for it. But I agree in part that it took something away from the game play when using a joystick.
I played the arcade and Atari 2600 versions of 'Centipede' on xBox Live Arcade, but that BBC Micro version doesn't look like players can do much except move left and right.
After seeing 99% of the 2600's games one might think so .. but after seeing Solaris just once, one will think that nearly all the 2600 developers where utter noobs .. the span of technology in between the 2600's games is insane.
Interestingly, the Colecovision seems to be the best 8 bit version and even better than some 16 bit versions, including a lot of later and more advanced systems .. It is not the closest to arcade, but from the looks and sounds it is just way more appealing the the others.
the apple II version sound more earbleeding than the others. it sound like a stick hitting a ground. even the lives at the top look like middle fingers
A lot of these versions are not nearly as good as they could be given the capabilities of the systems. The coleco and 5200 versions are excelent though.
Seems only the SNES version managed to replicate the arcade. The 2600 version was good, considering it was the 2600. The Sega Genesis version was quite pathetic, especially compared to the SNES.
@JeterSwisherFan88 yeah. The BBC Micro version was a flop. Didn't like it at all because You were so limited. slow fire slow movement & worst of all, limited movement.
I am surprised how bad the Intelivision looks. Especially the animation. Apple II sound is....TERRIBLE. I like the ST version (not shown) because you could play with your mouse. Surprisingly good controller for this game. The Colecovision looks like the one I would prefer to play.
The C64 version of Centipede was kind of disappointing. Graphically it was OK, but the gameplay was meh. There are far superior clones of the game on the C64 than the official port.

I LOVE THIS ATARI GAME!!
That effing spider
Awesome!!! Thanks for doing these... I could watch them over and over. Love to examine all the little differences in the classic versions of these games.
The Intellivision, Commodore 64, 5200, & the 7800 versions were a big surprise ! Excellent game play !

Apple II version sounds like me after taco Tuesday.
Of the early systems, the 5200, Coleco and C-64 had really nice ports. The 5200 and Coleco especially because they had nice track ball controllers.
The Master System version was easily the best one of them all. I was really impressed with the way that version looked and sounded in this video.
The Atari 7800 is better than all of them
@atarileaf :) I got that version when I was about 9 years old for Christmas & loved every minute of it. The game play was great for it's time all though the graphics were drab. The Atari 7800 Rom is used on the Basic Fun Arcade Classics toy version of Centipeid.
@PCGamer77 it was pretty hard to get the speed down on this one without a sound glitch. It was pretty annoying. I Managed to get a slight balance on it but yes ! it was a bit too fast.
3:01 that really sounds like 4ormulator v22 or swist major
i beat the atari 5200 version when i was 7-8. It restarts but the boards are different colors.
That Genesis (mega drive) pulling off sharp sound effects 😎👍

The favourable version for the BBC Micro was called 'Nemesis' :-) A lot more fast-paced and you could move upwards like the original.
The Atari 5200 version. I couldn't live without it.
There were a ton of clones on the home computers of the time. One of my faves was on the VIC-20. I forget what it was called.
Classic game room reviews this game version
The arcade version is amazing
I love game
Nothing beats playing this on an arcade machine, the graphics are amazing
@TheSentinel3000 Glad You enjoy them :)

Had the Atari 800xl cartridge and trakball controller. Really good game.
@MattTheSaiyan You're a walking encyclopedia. I'm Glad You are here to give us this information. I always learn something new from You. Thanks ! :D
@sandmanxo I actually had the track ball for the Atari 2600 & it worked great for it. But I agree in part that it took something away from the game play when using a joystick.

Atari 5200 and Atari XE. 7800 version would of been best if it was full screen.
How come to versionshad no suond?
It took me 4 months ! But it's finally complete ! lol
It is remarkable that they got the 2600 to even do this.
After seeing 99% of the 2600's games one might think so .. but after seeing Solaris just once, one will think that nearly all the 2600 developers where utter noobs .. the span of technology in between the 2600's games is insane.
Atari 5200 Sound like same Arcade
Interestingly, the Colecovision seems to be the best 8 bit version and even better than some 16 bit versions, including a lot of later and more advanced systems .. It is not the closest to arcade, but from the looks and sounds it is just way more appealing the the others.

@wrestletube1 And that was after I slowed it down in DosBox. lol
Seems only the SNES version managed to replicate the arcade. The 2600 version was good, considering it was the 2600. The Sega Genesis version was quite pathetic, especially compared to the SNES.
Joseph Duncan Genesisn't what Nintendo is
That Similar to Millipede, Sounds Good
I just realized that the arcade version has no music.
Clearly the Atari 2600 is far and away the winner.
what about the gameboy version?
Same as GBC, but without color
crazy game
Are you sure you didn't get the 52 and 78 hundred versions mixed up?
yup. I'm sure. Need to remake this one one day.
PC DOS one looked like mayhem.
didnt know it was on the Intellivision
@IntellivisionDude tyvm :)
Gotta love the Atari Lynx trying to show off their capability of scrolling even though it makes the game play so much worse.
The Arcade Version's the best!!
Why?
It looks better, sounds better and its the original
sick video
@JeterSwisherFan88 yeah. The BBC Micro version was a flop. Didn't like it at all because You were so limited. slow fire slow movement & worst of all, limited movement.
Nice job.
how come i didnt see even one direct arcade port from some of the more advanced consoles? It couldn't have been that great a challenge....could it?
Snes, closest to the arcade original.
The apple 2 sounds so bad but the atari 5200 sounded the best
Go 7800!!!
Great game.🧡😸
I am surprised how bad the Intelivision looks. Especially the animation.
Apple II sound is....TERRIBLE.
I like the ST version (not shown) because you could play with your mouse. Surprisingly good controller for this game.
The Colecovision looks like the one I would prefer to play.
Where's the nes
+Jack That was Millipede.
You'll find it in let's compare millipede
not sure what You mean.
Aim for the head
play game 3
The C64 version of Centipede was kind of disappointing. Graphically it was OK, but the gameplay was meh. There are far superior clones of the game on the C64 than the official port.
I hate centipede!
