  • This is just a very simple, low key video about a PowerVR Kyro 64MB that I recently received. I'm taking a break from the more serious content but I felt like putting together a quick little video about my new graphics card.
    Platform specs:
    Athlon XP-M 2400+ @ 2.4GHz
    512MB PC3200 @ 266MHz
    Asus A7S333 (SiS 745)
    Aureal Vortex 2
    Western Digital WD800 80GB HDD
    Windows 98SE Unofficial SP3
    Kyro v2.01 drivers

    Instead of using a plier to pinch the push-pins, just get a pen and push it over! You might have to try a few pens to find one that fits properly, but it's bullet proof, no risk of slipping and scratching the PCB :)

      I replaced these plastic things with
      motherboard stand-offs.
      I had a bunch of them laying around, and i thought why not.
      one acting as male other female. 3 twists on both sides and done, works perfect.
      (I did this on an old Vanta and an i740 (Intels first dedicated GPU)

      Thanks Phil, I'm definitely going to use this in future.
      If you don't have a pen handy, using the finger nails on your thumb/middle finger to pinch it while (gently) pushing it through the hole also works but can take a few tries.

    I think if you have a bad cap with decomposing electrolyte, and you then let the item sit for a decade, then they might not dome and they might not open either, they'll just find some other way to relieve the pressure. Through the bottom, or if domed, they might just open an invisible pinhole at the vent and call it a day. Then since the cap is underfilled, it may not be inclined to dome up or visibly vent ever again, while continuing to degrade electrically.
    How to replace a lost/damaged plastic circlip? Tape a suitable piece of plastic to a piece of scrap wood or something, take leather hole punch and lightly score a circle of outer diameter, then drill out the middle, punch out where scored, use a scalpel to cut it open on one side, and peel off. Also steel circlip kits are an option. Or just don't worry about it, it's not strictly necessary, and you can take off the rotor for in depth cleaning any time.
    A case against using electrical tape flat on the motor hub or elsewhere: it loses plastifier, shrinks and unsticks itself with time, later kicking about as a hardened snotty sort of thing, though this doesn't happen in a year or two, it takes longer, i haven't actually had it happen but i've seen the aftermath when opening someone's prior repair up. Packing tape and Scotch/Tesa tape might be better. The correct usage of electrical tape is on PVC wire insulation, stretched, where instead of unsticking itself, it should instead get fused semi-permanently to itself and to the wire insulation and is designed to not fail due to aging in this specific use.

  • @mndlessdrwer
    @mndlessdrwer Год назад

    Tessellation is actually a really cool process. You basically start with your model, you define the edges of the mesh in order to retain crisp edges to certain aspects of the model, then you tessellate and it's basically applying a bezier curve across a three dimensional surface and using additional triangles to fill the gap. In most instances it divides polygon faces into like shapes and adjusts the vertices for the new polygons to follow a bezier curve based on the vertices around it. It's a very cool bit of tech and can be used to vastly improve the fidelity of certain types of models if you use it properly.

I think Deoxit works better for some things but prefer the type you are using since it doesn't seem to leave any residue. I borrowed a PowerColor version of this card way back in 2001 or 2 for a week to try and sell it for a friend. And I must say i was impressed with its compatibility not so much for how fast it was, so I was unable to actually sell it because most of the games coming out at that point started to overtake its capabilities. I am wondering if it is because i had trilinear filtering on, most likely so. :( My cousin had a Kyro2 for a while as well and loved it.. I am somewhat changed in impression of it after this many years because of this video now. Its one of those cards had I known at the time, would have probably kept it for my collection at the time.

I only wished they had followed up on this with the next gen PVR. Its huge efficiency has really never been matched either. Zbuffer and color compression with HSR go a long way but still never matched true tile renderers.
      If only they implemented a bit more horsepower to take advantage of all the efficiency it bought them. It is figured it could have used 4 rendering pipelines and still not saturated the cards bandwidth.

    The games that came with these cards were one off..
    Get flux and alcohol to do cap work. Put flux on the old joint and flow extra solder on the joint. Use a solder braid with a liberal amount of flux on it to remove solder. Place braid on joint then place the hot tip on the braid. It will suck the solder out of the joint clean.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz Год назад

      I do this often when i have to liberate something with more pins, but caps, i just flood them with solder and then wiggle them out one pin a bit at a time, find this to be the fastest and easiest way. Or flood and put a sufficiently wide tip right in the middle, they basically fall out. Braid is finicky. Fresh flux on it helps for sure but then it's a lot of individual little steps. It's particularly unpleasant with these sorts of through plated PCBs.
      Also have to get lucky with decent braid, some i have just don't work well even when fluxed. Another thing to control is the amount of heat wicked away by the spool, so i cut off a little strip and hold it with 7sa tweezers.

    • @vedinthorn
      @vedinthorn 2 года назад +1

      Same. It was a really interesting way to render as it only drew the textures on the things you could actually see instead of everything in the whole scene regardless. That's why it got away with sdram when DDR had already become standard by then. But the lack of T&L engine, and programmable shading made the kyro2 obsolete for anyone but budget gamers like me. If kyro 3 had come out with that fixed and even with what would then be extremely cheap DDR memory and more pipelines to enable the features we might have a very different graphics card history than we do now.
