  • The iconic D-Day photograph of General Eisenhower meeting with the 101st Airborne just a few hours before the invasion of Normandy is this month's program topic. This photo was the subject of a recent story by CBS News Correspondent David Martin. The five-minute piece aired on CBS News Sunday Morning. The initial inquiry focused on Eisenhower's conversation with paratrooper Wallace Strobel. The photo captures a moment in time-but what does that mean? Could the primary source documents in the Eisenhower Library holdings shed additional light on that moment? What other possible stories could have come from investigating this single photograph? Dr. James Ginther will walk us through his discoveries while working with the CBS news team on this reference inquiry.
Dr. Ginther currently serves as the Eisenhower Presidential Library Supervisory Archivist. He joined the library staff in 2021 after nearly 20 years at the Archives Branch, Marine Corps Historical Division, Quantico, VA. He has made numerous presentations for regional archival conferences and Society of American Archivists conferences. Dr. Ginther also taught history, archives and public history courses at Abilene Christian University, Texas Tech University, and the United States Marine Corps Officer’s Basic School, Expeditionary Warfare School, and Command and Staff College.
The 2024 Waging Peace program series is made possible courtesy of the Eisenhower Foundation with generous support from the Jeffcoat Memorial Foundation.
