The generic term sledding refers to traveling down a snowy hill using a sled such as a Flexible Flyer with wooden slats and metal runners. It is usually done during the winter when there is snow. Flat plastic or aluminum discs and improvised sleds (carrier bags, baking trays, cafeteria trays, sheets of cardboard, etc.)
What is the purpose of sledding?
Wherever there are hills packed hard with snow, children love to go sledding. Sledding, or coasting, is a favorite winter sport. For thousands of years sleds have also been used to carry heavy loads of food, supplies, and people across the snow and ice. Some sleds and sleighs have runners on which they move.
How does a snow sled work?
    Gravity and energy
Gravity is what powers the sleds down the ice-covered tracks in bobsled, luge and skeleton events. The big-picture physics is simple - start at some height and then fall to a lower height, letting gravity accelerate athletes to speeds approaching 90 mph (145 kph).
    Why is sledding good?
Sledding works on our endurance, cardiovascular fitness, total body strength (between lugging a sled uphill and walking through snowy terrain), and encourage core stability and control during the fast ride down.
Why are sleds used in snow?
The body of a sled is supported on runners, or straight, narrow skids. Sleds are generally used where wheeled vehicles would encounter difficulty or bog down-for example, in Lapland and on the Alaskan, Canadian, and Asian tundras.
    Be Safe While Sledding
    To stay safe while sledding:
Have a responsible adult there in case of someone gets hurt.
Young kids (5 and under) should sled with an adult, and kids under 12 should be watched at all times.
Everyone should sit face-forward on their sleds with their feet downhill. Never go down the hill face-first because this can lead to a serious head injury. Never stand on a sled.
Everyone should go down the hill one at a time and with only one person per sled (except for adults with young kids).
Don't build a jump on a sledding hill.
Keep arms and legs within the sled at all times.
Someone who is on a sled that won't stop should roll off it.
Walk up the side of the hill and leave the middle open for other sledders.
Don't ever pull a sled with a moving vehicle (like a snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle).
    Use Safe Gear
The right gear can help prevent injuries. Be sure everyone who is sledding has:
A safe sled: Pick a sled that has brakes and can be steered.
A helmet: A winter sports helmet is best, but a bike helmet is better than no helmet.
Warm clothing: Wear a hat, gloves or mittens, snow pants, winter jacket, and snow boots. Don't wear a scarf, though, as it can get caught in a sled.
    Find a Safe Spot
Pick a safe place to sled:
Find a hill that is not too steep and has a long flat area at the bottom so there is a place to glide to a stop.
Avoid hills that end near a street or parking lot.
Avoid hills that end near ponds, trees, fences, or other hazards.
Make sure the hill does not have bumps, rocks, poles, or trees in the sledding path.
It is best to sled during the day. For sledding at night, make sure the path is well lit.
How old should a child be to start to sled?
What is the best time to go sledding?
The best time for sledding is right after a heavy, wet snowfall when the temperature is in the range of about 30 degrees Fahrenheit (or -1.1 degrees Celsius). Don't go out in sub-zero temperatures, and avoid icy hills, which can be too slick to be safe.
