    A Green Chartreuse blind tasting!?!
    And you concocted a mix that closely imitates it?!! Are you kidding me?!! This is the best video on RUclips ever!!!
    I love this channel so much! ❤❤❤
    You made me pour some of my precious Green Chartreuse (read "my precious" with Gollum's voice), into a Glencairn glass, to join you for the tasting. Cheers! 🍸😋
    I'm saving the quarter bottle that I have left like it's the last one on Earth. 😅
    P.S. If you're considering doing another blind tasting with green chartreuse and that imitation liquor in a cocktail, I would love to hear how they compare in a "Chartreuse Swizzle".

    My understanding is that bourbon heeds to be 51% or greater corn mash. So the 80% corn for Mellow Corn is not the reason it is not a bourbon, as 80% is greater. What makes it not a bourbon is that bourbon needs to be aged in new oak barrels and Mellow Corn uses once used barrels, so cannot be called a bourbon.

    The real sticking point with Mellow Corn is that it’s aged in a different barrel, if it was aged in new charred oak it would legally be bourbon

    • @TheEducatedBarfly
      @TheEducatedBarfly  5 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah but that’s the difference and it’s a big one. Corn whiskey can’t touch new wood

    • @Vortex1988
      @Vortex1988 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@TheEducatedBarfly Well... sort of. It either has to be old wood or if it is new wood, the it has to be uncharred.

      Just pointing out for the viewers who heard you mostly talk about the mashbill, which is not the point, and nothing about the barrel 👍

      I didn’t see a single bottle of Chartreuse for close to a year. In the last two months I’ve seen 4 bottles. I’m hoping people who hoarded it have enough for a while now and it’ll become a bit more regular to find. I mean a bottle lasts me like a year anyways

    Hey Leandro! Glad you tried the cocktails I suggested.
    I have had both the Oh My Word and Pumpernickel myself and love them both. I also make the Oh My Word with Ransom like you did. I have tried the Pumpernickel with both Rittenhouse and Jack Daniel’s Bonded Rye and I prefer the higher rye content of the Jack Daniel’s in the drink. I can also see a cask strength rye being good in the cocktail because of the big flavor of the Punt E Mes, Ramazzotti and Angostura.
    I have not tried the Golden Ghost yet, but thought it sounded intriguing. Although it sounded like it was not as good as the two other cocktails based on your reaction. I loved the Chartreuse/Chartreuse alternative comparison you did with the Oh My Word cocktail.
    The cocktail with Chartreuse looked a little more yellow/green and the other a little more amber in color.

    The other big difference between bourbon and corn whiskey is that bourbon has to be aged in first-fill barrels while corn whiskey is not.

    • @Quintinohthree

      Matter of fact corn whiskey may never age in first-fill barrels.

    • @ramackay

      First fill barrels are different from new barrels in the whiskey world. First fill barrels in Scotch are barrels that held another liquid (typically either bourbon or sherry) but has only been used by the Scotch distillery once. Virgin oak is the term used in Scotch whisky for new barrels.

    Try mixing two parts Génépy to one part Faccia Brutto Centerbe; it’s an extremely reasonable substitute for Green Chartreuse when used in a cocktail and won’t break the bank.

    23:05 Just reminder for everyone - Yes, Corn Whiskey has to be at least 80% corn but Bourbon can be 100% corn so the difference is the minimum not the max as there are 100% corn bourbons on the market. The main difference is that Bourbon has to be New Oak aged and Corn Whiskey isn't allowed to touch New Oak, it has to either be unaged or used or uncharred oak. This is done because Bourbon should taste like New Oak Barrel and Corn Whiskey should taste like Corn.
    I guess the question would be can you replace the New Oak flavors missing from Mellow in cocktail with bitters or other bittering/spice agents to keep it balanced?

    I have to warn you, in a friendly way, This was a good episode, but... I have subbed to many a cocktail channel to see highlighted cocktails made. These channels seem to change over time, moving from their original intent. That's when I stopped with "how to drink" and move on on. I stopped with Greg, then I stopped with Steve, I don't want to stop with you. So, just keep making cocktails dude. right now its just you and Anders.
